That is why I want to speak to you now, before the storm is upon us.” He stood up straight and tall, striking the figure of a Captain giving the order to charge into battle. “I want you to be the next Second in Command of Oak Colony.”
Dawnfrost’s heart pounded loudly in her chest. She had known it was likely, and it was what she had always envisioned for herself, but hearing those words spoken aloud silenced all other sounds except her heart.
Before she answered, she found her eyes slipping toward the shadows of the bushes, looking for a pale tabby pelt. She forced herself to look back at Redleaf.
“I accept, Redleaf. I will serve Oak Colony and you with all I have.”
Redleaf rested his muzzle on top of her head. “I know you will.” He brushed his cheek against hers, drawing a short purr from her. “Oh, Dawnfrost. I hope you’ll forgive me for putting you in such an unenviable position. What will we do without Elmtail?”
