Every Man, Elf, and Dwarf who rode to the Black Gates of Mordor knew that they were riding to their own death: knew that they were buying Frodo time with the coin of their own lives. But knowing the necessity of one's sacrifice still does not make that an easy coin to spend, especially when a revelation come nearly too late makes the knowledge of all that one is giving-up all the more bitter. But such was the fate of Gimli son of Glóin when he walked into battle alongside his Legolas for the very last time.

After the war, Legolas and Gimli ride back to their homes together, for the Lonely Mountain is only a few days' journey from the Elvenking's Halls. But when it comes time to part and go alone to the forest and the mountain, they find they are in no rush to separate and Gimli instead goes with Legolas beneath the trees about which he has spent so many years hearing dreadful stories told. Eryn Lasgalen those woods are called now, not Mirkwood, but long years of Shadow are not so quickly wiped-away and Gimli is unsure of what welcome he will receive from these strange elves whom he knows only from his father's stories.

Other elves:

Legolas: The more I look at it, the uglier it gets, right?

Other elves: Haha, yeah... (seriously though, making the same joke 20 times in a month isn't funny anymore).

At the Council of Elrond:

Legolas, after being introduced to Gimli at the Council of Elrond: OMG, he is hot now.

After the War of the Ring, in Mirkwood:

Legolas (all anxious): Dad, this is Gimli. I want to marry him, and I don't care that he's a dwarf—I love him.

Thranduil (sighing and putting his hand to his face in resignation): Yeah, I knew you'd end up with a dwarf.

Legolas: What?

Thranduil: Legolas, you've spent the last 70 years looking at a locket with a drawing of a dwarf. I've seen you snickering while looking at it; you weren't exactly subtle.

Legolas: Oh.

As preparations for the wedding of Aragorn Elessar and Arwen Undómiel get underway in Gondor, some of its citizens entertain questions about the appropriateness of wedding their new king to one who comes from such a different culture. Gimli has questions of his own about this elvish wedding, and he would task Legolas with answering them—preferably where other elves are too far away to hear, lest he say anything that might offend those delicate pointy ears!
