I'm super stoked to get to share my full piece for the third volume of the @yaoithatoldman old man yaoi zine! Legolas and Gimli are both technically old, by virtue of having longer natural lifespans than your baseline humans, but I felt that that was a bit of a cop-out, so here they are somewhat more than 120 years into the fourth age in valinor, where Gimli is starting to show his age.
They've both kept the gifts of Lothlorien with them the whole time, but the fashion is otherwise very mixed- both of their vests and Gimli's trousers are in a classic dwarvish style but made in Valinor; Legolas' trousers are Silvan, his undershirt Sindarin, and Gimli's boots were a gift to the lord of Aglarond from the king of Rohan as a mark of their long friendship.
For the jewelry, Legolas' anklet/toe ring combo is Amanyar Noldorin and his armlet is dwarvish, out of Erebor. The clasps for both of their braids and Gimli's mustache are one set, made by Gimli himself. Legolas' has of course a green leaf, a pun on his name. Gimli's is kinda small and hard to see from this distance the hammer and anvil and seven stars of the line of Durin. Gimli also made their wedding rings (Legolas' is alas not visible here). Legolas' earrings were a gift from his father.

We have heard tell that Legolas took Gimli Gloin's son with him because of their great friendship, greater than any that has been between Elf and Dwarf. If this is true, then it is strange indeed: that a Dwarf should be willing to leave Middle-earth for any love. And yet, where bonds this strong exist, all things are possible. Now at last, more can be said of this matter...
Fanart comic for one of my favourite fanfics of all time! When stars align by @chrononautintraining. I read it first some three years ago, and I swear I have re-read it like, 10 times by this point. Gimli/Legolas is one of my favourite ships, and I swear this fanfic has some of the most heartful, funny, and gut punchy scenes with them ever. So if you like the ship, uh, please go read the fic before seeing the comic below --- it's a scene from one of the last chapters, you see. Gah! I swear, this scene. First time I read it I had to put the phone down a bit. My boy doesn't even remember what the word for tears is! Yet knows that if he is Gimli, then the other one must be Legolas. Because that he is Gimli might be a bit shaky, but if there is a Gimli, it logically follows that there must also be a Legolas. Like a law. If Gimli, then Legolas. Ugh!!
This isn't the only good scene in the fanfic. I was so so stuck between making fan comic of this one, or the balrog scene. It's so… action and magic, but in a way that feels deep and profound somehow. But after much back and fourth I decided this was my favourite, and the one I wanted to draw. I hope I did it justice.
I am not very used to drawing humans (..or dwarves or elves) but I think I did and ok job here! The faces look ok, and the hands I think turned out pretty good. Oh, and I am very happy with how the tear-/raindrops turned out.
I am not happy with tumblr though. I haven't posted much much art here, so I didn't know it couldn't handle long art, I thought it was just the width it was cranky with. So my beautiful long comic had to be chopped up, and now has ugly white lines bisecting the continuous background. It is what it is, but sad.
Hm, some details for fun:
Drew Gimli's beard as existing but short - in the story he starts with just stubble, it starts to grow out when he's lost, and when he meets up with the others they jokingly call him a bearded warrior, but how much beard isn't clear… plus, this is much later than that as well. So I went with this length.
I know later they describe the broken axe as "a stick" so I assume the head is not this intact… but that's less fun to draw. So here it still has more than half the head. Also, I couldn't find a description of the axe so I just drew some nice shapes, and put the seven stars on there.
Legolas' clothes are as described when he found Gimli in the caves --- I should probably assume he's changed since then, but meh, looks good. So he's still wearing that here. Gimli's clothes weren't described with colors, so I should have maybe assumed they weren't as colorful, but blue just looked good so. And his helmet is a mix of the movie's helmet and the description in the fic.

Gimli thought the worst thing he would face while visiting Legolas's home would be unfriendly elves and awkward grudges. He certainly did not expect orcs. When Legolas is taken captive, Gimli will have to work alongside the foreboding elvenking to save his friend before it's too late. Along the way, will he and Thranduil finally come to some sort of understanding? Or will their hot tempers forever sunder any hope of an accord between them?

Legolas, very awkwardly stood there, bowing his head slightly to the red-headed dwarf in front of him: A pleasure to meet you, Master Gloin, I’ve heard much about you.
Gloin, completely remembers Legolas, now putting a name to a face and very irritated: …do you not recognise me?
Legolas, who honestly still thinks all dwarves look the same (he’s working on it): ..should I?
