Sometimes you just gotta draw a hug, so hereâs Ray and Floyd having a moment together! I used my sketching brush for the entire picture here and Iâm really digging the softer look it gave.Â
However... thereâs always room for angst. Modified version under the cut, but content warning for scrapes and bloodstains!
Ah yes, now this is familiar territory. Iâm not quite sure what happened to him to make injuries like that, but it was a fun artistic experiment nonetheless!

Content warnings:Â for the first time in a while, nothing noteworthy to mention here!
His leg was on fire and the rest of him was slowly freezing and there was nobody there to save him. He screamed and screamed into the forest until his voice went hoarse.Â
Ray and Hugh had been walking through the forest for a few minutes before they heard the screams.
âAre you sure he would have gone towards town? Iâm just saying, that kid seems to really like the ocean,â Hugh sighed, trudging through mud, shiny new boots from Gawainâs crew already getting coated in grime.
âListen, just because we found him drowning twice doesnât mean heâd go there when running away from seafaring people. Heâs smart. Heâll head inland towards a village,â Ray said. His feet were bare, but he was used to navigating difficult terrain without shoes, unlike Llyr when heâd passed through earlier. He had relatively less trouble than Hugh, too, who slipped and nearly fell at his words.
âSmart? He literally dove into the ocean, from our ship, during a storm. How fucking smart does that sound to you?â
âI wouldâve done the same thing, had I been facing cruel torture,â he suggested lightly. If Hugh didnât know Ray, he may have been inclined to think he was kidding.Â
Their walk fell silent then for a few minutes, no sounds to be heard except for those of pouring rain and squelching mud.
âDo you really think heâs gonna-â
âHugh, please, we went over this already. I donât want to think about it any more than you do.âÂ
âHm, thatâs a low bar to set, Raymond,â he laughed, âbecause Iâve been thinking about just how angry heâs gonna be since we started walking.â
Ray couldnât deny heâd been thinking about the same thing, but certainly more out of apprehension than excitement. Mere hours after heâd sacrificed himself for Llyrâs safety, here he was preparing to lure him back home with what must have been his most prized possession.
Ray readjusted the seal skin cloak around his shoulders, almost regretting having chosen to wear it. He just wanted to be able to protect some part of Llyr from Hugh, but it felt so wrong on his own body. It should have been around Llyrâs shoulders where it fit like it was made for him, and where it would keep that panic of losing it at bay.Â
They trudged on as the rain picked up, soaking them once again. It was then that they heard something in the distance.
It was a shrill noise that he couldnât quite place, yet upset him somewhere deep down.
Ray heard it again, and it was louder that time. Emotional and desperate, a scream for help from far, far away.
âDid you-?â Hugh started, but he cut him off and grabbed his wrist as he changed directions towards the noise.
âThis way,â he said. âEither make a trail or figure this out with the compass so we donât get lost. Come on.â Ray sped his pace to a jog, feeling Hugh strain to keep up behind him as he fiddled with a compass, reading angles and making sure they knew how to get back once theyâd found Llyr.Â
The run was much longer than he anticipated, the scream a constant in the distance as they splashed through puddles and underbrush, but only growing weaker as they drew closer to its source. By the time they drew within visible range, the screams had diminished to choked shouts and whimpers, calling out, â...help! I canât die here I canât, donât leave me to die Iâm gonna die Iâm gonna die...â
They heard the words trail off just as they spotted him, a figure half buried in the mud, laying flat on his back.
âLlyr, Llyr! What happened?â Ray knelt down in the mud--his legs were already soaked anyway; there was no reason to be cautious now--and the boy blinked faintly up at him.
âAnimal trap, it looks like,â Hugh tried and failed to hide a smile. âServes him right.â
âStop that,â Ray hissed, turning back to Llyr. âTalk to me, buddy. Youâre gonna be okay, weâll get you out of that and weâll-â he swallowed reflexively, âweâll take you back and help you get better.
He tried to say the words as gently as possible, but Llyrâs eyes widened all the same, expression dropping into fear as he tried to scramble backwards, only jostling his leg more. He cried at the pain as he tried to crawl away, and Ray heard Hugh mutter a curse behind him before crouching above Llyrâs shoulders, holding forcibly in place.
âStop, stop no no!â he thrashed, and Ray shot Hugh a look of disdain.
âWell? I got him still,â he grinned, propping the boy up in his lap and holding him there with a bruising grip on his upper arms. âYou do the honors.â Ray followed his gaze to the animal trap, the sharp metal teeth disappearing underneath skin and the puddle of blood mixing in with the mud below.Â
He glanced back at Llyrâs pained face cautiously before crawling down to his leg where the trap had latched on. It dug in deep, especially in the fleshier part of his leg, and Ray grimaced at the sight. Heâd need to stand to get enough leverage to even dream of forcing this thing open.
Carefully, he stood and placed his bare foot on the bottom part of the trap, between two of the teeth and near the end. Taking the top jaw in hand, he grunted and pulled as hard as he could, straining against the surprising resilience. It really shouldnât have been so surprising, considering these were meant to hold bears in place, but the thought really didnât help Ray in the moment.
To make matters worse, every time he pulled, shaking arms shifting Llyrâs leg back and forth in the trap, the boy whimpered and whined with pain, seemingly too delirious with it to talk now.
âHugh, is he alright? Is he even still conscious?âÂ
âI dunno. Probably not, by the look of him.â
Despite what the captain and his ex-shipmate believed, Llyr was very much still awake, but far too exhausted to pay any more attention to them. Thoughts were running so slowly through his head as if they too were buried in mud.
He should have been panicking and worrying about them taking him back, but all he could think about was the grime nearly covering his entire body now. It felt like a cocoon, a cage, a vice on his entire being that wouldnât let go. The rain wasnât powerful enough to wash it away, and suddenly it was unbearable to be out of the ocean.Â
All at once, he was so exhausted from dealing with this human form. He longed for the comfort of the sea, of his skin forming around him just as it was always meant to be, but stupid, stupid him had left that behind for a foolish, horribly timed escape. Weakly, he squirmed under Hughâs hold and he could have sworn the pressure of its stomach against his back rippled in a laugh as he muttered over and over about water, water, waterâŚ
The pain didnât register in his brain when the trap finally came off of his leg, and neither did the sensation of open bleeding, but he did feel the vertigo as he was lifted from the ground and placed up on his feet.Â
It didnât even register to him that they were trying to force him back with them until he took his first step.

Content warnings: suspension over water, dislocated joint
Slowly and carefully, so as not to injure himself, he started working the rope between his hands back up, leaning against the figurehead and trying his best to make an escape.
It was bearable at first. But what kind of slow, agonizing torture wasnât?
The small ledge that Rayâs feet were balanced on gave him leverage to push up, trying to reach far enough to dislodge the rope. He figured it should have been easier, considering how smoothly and painlessly it had slipped over when Gawain put him here, but then again his feet hadnât been tied back at that point.Â
After the first few attempts, he felt the strain burning in his core, his wrists sore and chafed from every time he lifted his weight, only to fall right back down, the rope pulling on his wrists and nestling in that notch that seemed made just for it.
The more Ray tried, the more exhausted he became, and every muscle in his body burned from how tense heâd been. It wasnât working. He hadnât even gotten close to getting it off, and he was doubting escape was even possible at this point. He rocked back and forth in his bindings, shifting and trying to ease the pressure on each wrist and keep the blood flowing. The last thing he needed right now was for the circulation to get cut off.
It was when he was moving the rope from side to side, though, that he noticed something. When he leaned to the left and rocked forward at just the right angle, he felt a pressure at the middle of the rope, and the sound of fibers tearing. He did it again a few times just to make sure he wasnât going insane already, but he knew he was right.
It was tearing through the fibers of the rope.
With renewed vigor, Ray rubbed at the rope and sawed as quickly as he could. The sun was already coming up, and he wasnât sure how long heâd have before other people woke up for the day. It was a long, arduous process and he felt his muscles shaking and less precise the longer he went at it. He switched between propelling with his feet, then with his torso, then with his arms, and all the way back down again. Rinse and repeat.Â
He couldnât have guessed how long it took, but the sun was already rising in the sky as his shaking, aching muscles gave out. He fell, his weight held entirely by his wrists and feet, and he wondered if this was what Llyr had felt like earlier. Or when Hugh had tormented him just hours before that. The poor kid couldnât get a break, but he hoped that he was alright now. Ray had made a deal. He had to be okay.
-----------------------------
Llyr didnât sleep for the rest of the night. He knew he should have. He knew Ray had given itself up for him to have this opportunity. He knew he was so, so tired.Â
But his arm was still out of place and it hurt so badly no matter which way he laid on it. He needed to fix it. He couldnât let it stay out like that.
He tried to remember what Ray had done the first time but heâd been so scared and so much had happened since then that he couldnât get the movements right, only succeeding in hurting his arm further the more he messed with it. His hands were kept too close to the ground and there wasnât enough room to move his arm around the right way anyway.
He didnât know how long it had been since heâd given up on trying to fix it. Everything was a dull haze of pain, and he occasionally slipped down into darkness only to resurface what felt like seconds later. But eventually, the door clicked open and he blinked, pushing himself up to see who it was.
Gawain bent by his side, a small key in hand which it used to unlock a shackle around his wrist. It was the reverse motion from when heâd been put down there, now threading the chain back through and locking it so Llyr could leave the small loop on the floor.Â
âMy arm, please i canât, it hurts please fix my arm-!â he said, breathless as he was pulled swiftly to his feet.
âNot now. Weâre going to visit your friend, now. I wonder how he fared through the rest of the nightâŚâ it said, starting the walk back out and down the hallway.Â
Those words shouldnât have sent such a pang through Llyrâs chest. What did it mean? How bad had that punishment been? Ray had volunteered: he should be blaming it for that, but at the same time⌠it had been for him, right? It would be his fault that someone else got hurt.
But Ray was just some human. He didnât need to care about its well being because it shouldnât mean anything to him. Didnât mean anything to him.
They emerged onto the deck and Gawain herded him up stairs to the bow of the ship, but when they reached the top, there was nobody there. He could see just a barely perceptible flash of anger in the manâs eyes, and watched as it leaned over the edge to examine the figurehead, then the water below.
âHeâs gone,â it mumbled, and Llyr didnât hear much else after that. He heard everything that was happening, mostly just Gawain shouting furiously, trying to round up a group to search for the missing captive and figure out how in the hell it had made it out without anyone noticing. But he could only think of one thing.
It abandoned me.
It wasnât Rayâs duty to stay with him and he didnât even trust it with his life, but he suddenly felt so alone. The ship was filled with people who followed Gawain, and Gawain wanted to hurt him, so the people wouldnât hesitate to either. Even Hugh would be eager to hurt him again, he was sure.Â
Heâd been abandoned, marooned on this island far too populated with cruel humans, and he couldnât bear to think about what would happen now.

âOf course. Now letâs go get you cleaned up.â It offered its hand and, tentatively, Llyr took it.
He allowed the human--Ray, the other had said?--to pull him up but didnât dare rely on its strength after that. Llyr loosened his grip on Rayâs hand and was relieved when it did the same in return. It was a small comfort in such an frightening situation.
They walked together, him with unsteady, shambling steps, the human with large, confident strides. As they passed the woman he shied away, putting Rayâs body between him and it. The harpoon still lay on the ground next to it, but he figured the human would have killed him on sight if it knew what he really was.Â
Llyr wasnât safe by any means, but he was still alive. Heâd just use these humans for as long as he needed before he could repair his skin, and then heâd leave.Â
As they walked, he felt the skin, now his makeshift cloak, shifting and rubbing foreignly against his skin, the edges of the torn hole wrapped around his shoulder. It was soaking wet like the rest of himself, but at least it felt warm. Though the warm sun beat down, the water was cooling against his skin. A light wind blew from across the water and he shivered.
As they approached the boat, there were other humans around talking and doing various tasks. One of them, whom Ray called out to, stood out from the others with pale, heavily freckled skin and a fiery red mop of hair. It turned around, looking first at Ray and then settling on him.
âOh, hello! Who are you?â It had a puzzled look on its face, and it looked much less intimidating than Ray. It was much thinner and less muscular, even if it was taller than him, and Llyr figured that even he could stand a chance against it in a fight.
He stayed silent instead of answering it, choosing instead to look the new human up and down for weapons. There was a sword strapped to his side, sheathed, but it didnât seem to be armed otherwise. Llyr shuffled away from it, but he found himself doubting this human would even want to use it if given the chance.
âFloyd,â Ray said, realizing Llyr probably wasnât going to speak, âcould you go ahead and grab us some towels? Iâm going to help him get settled in Hughâs spare bed.âÂ
âOh, sure! Got it.â It flashed a small smile before hurrying up the ladder on the side of the boat.Â
Ray gestured for Llyr to go ahead of him and follow after Floyd, but just the sight of the ladder made dread settle in his gut. To any normal person it probably would have looked fine, but with his non-existent coordination and strength, he wasnât sure if heâd be able to haul himself up the rungs. Behind him, Ray seemed to notice his hesitation.
âHere, you seem really tired out, so let me help. Iâll lift you up, and you just have to grab onto the top, okay?â It placed calloused hands on either side of his waist after it spoke, obviously expecting him to accept. What other choice did he really have?
Llyr nodded, muscles tensing as the grip tightened and he was hoisted off the ground. He flailed helplessly for a second before he was high enough to grab the top rung, wrapping both hands around and clinging like his life depended on it. His feet quickly found rungs further down, and he swung them up over the side of the boat with a grunt.
He meant to hop down to the deck from there, but somewhere off the edge of the railing he slipped, falling hard on his side and rolling with the momentum. He shouted as ropes wrapped all around his body, constricting and stopping his frantic struggles and yelps as he rolled and tangled in them. A net of some kind wound around his body and he pulled blindly against it, whining and crying out wordlessly in a panic when it didnât come loose.
Footsteps approached but he couldnât see where they were coming from, or whose they were. He strained and raised his head, peering out through a hole with wide, pleading eyes, ready to beg for help from Ray, but saw a new pair of legs instead.
âThe hell? Whatâre you doing on our ship, kid? Tryna steal? Huh?â A deep, gruff voice sounded above him, and a boot covered toe rolled him over further into the net until he was flat on his back, staring up at a leathery, tanned face framed by curling facial hair.Â
He didnât even try to correct the human, instead focusing on rolling back over to get the net off of his body. He managed to flip back on his stomach before a boot was on his back, heel pressed to the small of it and digging in hard.
âNo you donât, you lilâ shit. Dirty thieves like you deserve punishment. Canât even have the decency to join a proper organization...â it growled, and Llyr cried out at the sharp pressure right on his spine. It restricted his breathing all over again, and he tried to take deep, smooth breaths through the panic and constriction.
âCanât even have the decency to put on some fuckinâ clothes to rob a bunchâa pirates, huh? Or you just that damn poor, huh? You want us to pity you so bad we send you out with a fuckinâ fortune?!â It drew back its foot and slammed it into his side, sending him rolling up further in the net with a yelp. Llyrâs head spun and he couldnât tell which way was up, where he was, couldnât move an inch in the thick ropes.Â
Before he could steel himself, the boot came forward and kicked him hard in the head, sparks flying around his spinning world. Another kick flew into his side, hitting right over the sluggishly bleeding wound and he screamed when the white hot burst of pain rocketed up his torso.
âHugh! Whatâs gotten into you?!â Rayâs voice sounded from far away and Llyr felt pounding feet against the deck, shaking it harder with each step. Thankfully, the kicks stopped
âStupid kid was about to rob us,â it said casually, almost proudly.
âNo, this kid was hurt and drowning at the shoreline and Iâm bringing him in to help him. Why was this net out in the first place?!â
âFishing,â Hugh grunted, âand he still looks like a dumbass brute to me.â
âWell, heâs gonna be staying with you for a few days at least, so please learn to like him.â
Hugh groaned in response, and Llyr questioned his decision to come with the pirates at all.
(okay, the figurehead actually didnât make it into the part because it got too long. I was able to imply, but this will happen in tomorrowâs piece along with escape attempt. Sorry!!)

Content warnings: sinking in quicksand, dislocated joint (again oops)
Llyr glanced around himself, feeling the sand shift and squish below his feet. It took him a few more seconds to realize he was sinking alarmingly quickly into it, but the panic only set in when he realized-
He couldnât pull his feet out.
He started with trying to lift his feet to calmly and carefully step up, but the thin layer of sand they were trapped under was more akin to a brick. The sand was up to his ankles now, and he struggled against its grip, jumping and wiggling back and forth only to sink further and faster. Whining in terror, he tried to move with as much force as possible, whatever it would take to get out of whatever this was supposed to be.
âLlyr! Donât struggle, please, just calm down,â Ray said, but it was so far away and his problem was right here because he was still sliding down as the sand sucked him in like a gaping hole. It was cold underneath the surface, and it only seemed to harden more securely around his legs the longer he was under. âItâs quicksand! The more you struggle, the faster you sink!â
That caught his attention, and he looked up to see Ray across from him, waving frantically with his bound arms.
âYou gotta get out of there. Lean back, Llyr, thatâll help I promise.â It strained against the arms holding it back, obviously wanting to help. Under the surface thoughts of sheer terror and panic, Llyr wondered what it could have even done to help him. If it had stepped forward, they would have been stuck in the patch together, which was even worse.
He did try to lean back like Ray said, figuring it had to be better than nothing, and it nearly worked when he felt his feet shifting the sand up, but a hand pushed him back up straight.
âNone of that. Youâre staying right where you are,â Gawain said, âunless youâd like to see him hurt as well.â
Llyr looked back up at Ray, straining against the person holding it, and looking more distressed with every centimeter he sank. It was nearly up to his knees now, constricting so tightly it felt like his legs would stop working. Gawain leaned down to where his eye level was now, and whispered in his ear
âOn second thought, this is already torture enough for him, isnât it?â It laughed, straightening back up. He only glared, trying to keep up the facade of defiance.
However, Llyrâs hands were still held above his head as instructed, too frightened to move them down, and Gawain took hold of the left one in a tight grip. It held it steady below the cuff and took one of the hooks still dangling down from the boat. For a horrifying moment, Llyr was sure it was about to be shoved straight through his palm.
Gawain hooked it right underneath the shackle instead, but the sharp metal still scraped his wrist as it was pushed through the small space, sending warm blood dribbling down his arm. It did the same with the other, the two thick ropes now suspending his hands above his head.
âWhy- what are those for?â he asked, but he already knew the answer.
âWhen youâve served your full punishment, those are going to help pull you out. Unless youâd rather be left to suffocate in the sand, of course.â it said.Â
âBut... uh, my shouldersâŚâ
âYes, what about those? Theyâll be fine, Iâm sure,â it said so seriously that it was nearly infuriating.
âThe last time they did this, they- it came out of place. It might do that again,â he cringed, feeling the pull as he kept sinking, but the ropes were too slow in giving slack. The sand climbed over his thighs, and he couldnât help the panicked, hitching breaths that started to override his attempted calm demeanor.
âThey? Whoâs done this to you before? Has someone else caught you stealing, brat?â
âI didnât,â he insisted again, unwilling to give in to the manâs lie, âbut⌠but Hugh, he um, he hurt me and- and he did that.â
âDid he nowâŚâ it turned away from where he was still sinking down and down into the earth, instead focusing on Hugh. Itâd been quiet the whole time, expression split between smug satisfaction at his punishment, and frustration at being held in chains. It frowned, now, nervous as the captain approached.
âHe was gonna steal from us, and I had to stop the dumb thing,â Hugh explained, already anticipating the question and rolling his eyes. âSo no, he didnât trick us, but he sure hurt someone else for that fancy ass cloak heâs got on.â
Gawain turned around, looking at Llyr properly for perhaps the first time since itâd found him. Its eyes looked down what was left showing of his figure, with the quicksand still claiming his thighs and freezing his entire lower body in its grasp.Â
âHmm, would you prefer to do the honors then?â it asked, looking back at Hugh.
âHonors? Whatâre you talking about?âÂ
âNo effective punishment would allow the recipient to die,â Gawain said, as if its point was already obvious. âIâm asking you to help knock him loose when itâs time to get him out. Whichever way you please, as retribution for him getting such a respectable man as yourself wrapped up in this.â
âOh. Oh! Gotcha. Yeah, âcourse, my pleasure,â it grinned.Â
Gawain left Hugh over there with a guard who removed the chain on its ankle cuffs and walked it over.
âHmm, fancy cloak indeed. Wonder what poor man you took this off of- oh and look at that. A hole. Some thief you are, damaging whatever you can get your hands on. I should hope there arenât any weak links in my locket, now, for your sakeâŚâ it examined the cloak, which reached down his back and was now brushing the quicksand, nearly being engulfed by it. âIâll take that for you. Would be a shame if such a well crafted item went to waste.â
âHey- no!â Llyr shouted, leaning away when it reached for the sealskin around his neck, but he could only wriggle so far. The sand pulled him faster as he struggled, and Gawain was able to unfasten the cloak from his neck and pull it away anyway. âNo!! Give it- give- please, I need that!!â He screamed and shouted as it handed his cloak off to a crewman, muttering something before turning back.
A brat indeed,â it scoffed. âThe only person that needs this cloak is whoever you stole it from, and Iâm sure weâll be able to find them as soon as weâre back on the mainland.â
He wanted to shout exactly why he needed that cloak, that it really was his and that they had no right to take it from him, but theyâd never believe that. He wept as the sand crept over his hips and the possession his entire identity revolved around was taken from him. The human with it rounded a corner back into the ship and disappeared from sight.
âNo, no!! ...no, no nonono--â Llyr cried, despair setting in. They ignored him.
âHugh, loosen him up. My men only need the signal and weâll lift him out,â it said, and he saw Hugh stride in front of him, just around the puddle of quicksand he was sinking into.Â
It obeyed without another word, flashing a grin before pulling back its leg and kicking right into Llyrâs gut. The pain was instantaneous and blunt, forcing out a shout as it pushed the air from his lungs. He doubled over, but the leg came to his side, kicking out again and again all around him. Bruising force pushed him against the sand around him, moving it and pulling him down faster.
âWhat are you doing?! Stop it, sto-!â Hugh kicked him right beneath the ribs and he screamed, the heat and hurt spiking as he doubled over, struggling to breathe. The beating didnât stop, but Llyr did notice the strain building back up on his shoulders. It took him a moment to notice the hooks in his shackles were pulling him up now, their only leverage being his wrists.
He didnât actually move up at first, and for a terrible moment, he was being stretched too far, pulled up by the insistent ropes and back down by the sand he was stuck fast in and he couldnât breathe and there were still kicks rocking him back and forth endlessly.
Then he felt the sand spread apart as he started moving up with the hooks. Through eyes blurred with tears in dizziness, he could see Ray still struggling in front of him, shouting and pulling against the arms holding it in place.
âLift from his chest! He just told you about his shoulder, itâs gonna-â Llyrâs scream cut him off, and the pain was worse this time when his shoulder came out. The ropes didnât stop lifting, even when he writhed and shrieked from where he hung in midair, mindless with the pressure tearing him apart. He didnât even notice he was out when Gawain walked slowly around him, observing his agony with a careful eye.
âPlease! Ple-ease lemme down, please it h-hurts!â Llyr cried, twitching and kicking, trying to find solid ground that was just far enough away.
âHm,â Gawain hummed dismissively, turning to Ray. âTake that one below deck, and the other to the crew quarters. Iâll get the thief to the bow for his good nightâs rest.â

no editing we die like fools.
Even as he went still, as he let out a breath, as his eyes rolled into the back of his headâŚ
The singing never stopped.
He woke to lips pressing against his own, stale breath forced down his throat, and hands repeatedly pounding down on his chest. He couldnât breathe right under the weight and he tried to bat the hands off, choking and coughing on wet breaths.
âStah⌠stop it, gotta- gotta breatheâŚâ he slurred, pushing weakly against hands that immediately let go, to his relief.Â
âFinally! I was starting to think you died for good. Captain woulda been fuckinâ pissed,â a female voice said, and he looked up to see a woman kneeling above him. She was part of Gawainâs crew, no doubt, but he didnât know why she was there, or why he was there for that matter.
Where had he been before this? Gawain tied him to the front of the ship, he remembered that much. Then⌠heâd broken free, hadnât he? Heâd broken free and swam away with those other people: the ones who looked like they had tails and held him down under the water until he couldnât stay conscious any longer.Â
Who were they? Why were they there? Nobody dared go for a swim that far out in the ocean, for fear of what vicious creatures lived there below the surface. Were these people some of those vicious creatures?
He banished the thought from his head. Heâd been so incoherent by that time that some of his memory had to be imagined or exaggerated. Though that still didnât explain how in the world he survived. Ray turned back to the woman still leaning over him.
âHow did y-you-â he started, but a coughing fit overtook him. Water and spit dripped from the corner of his mouth when he spoke again, weakly. âHowâd you find me?â
âYou were floating in the water right over here. How could I not find you?â she chuckled, grabbing at his arm. âNow get up. Captain wants you back safe and sound, and itâs not like I brought anyone else to carry you back.â True to her word, there really was nobody else around the small cove heâd ended up in. How heâd ended up there, he had no idea, but the ship was nowhere in sight.
She leaned down to pull Ray more firmly, hoisting him to his unsteady feet before he could protest further. It was only then that the full extent of the situation struck him.
They were isolated. He didnât know where he was going, but he knew which direction the lady was walking. If he kept going on his own, he was bound to find the ship eventually. And Llyr was still there; what was happening to him now that Ray had run off?Â
He curled his hand into a fist before he even knew what he was doing, and launched a punch at her temple from behind. She crumpled to the ground with a shout, and she was out cold. Well. That worked out, he supposed. The adrenaline was still coursing through Rayâs veins as he continued on trembling legs, walking across rocky sand with larger chunks that dug into his feet, already sore from the night before.Â
The sun, rising higher in the sky, heated everything around him and forced him to sweat out water he didnât think his body even had in its dehydrated state. But eventually, after not all too long, he made it back to the ship where there were plenty more sailors milling around.Â
Most seemed to be patrolling the edges of the beach, and he pressed back up against the rocky cliff, the shade it provided just enough to hide him from plain sight. Ray continued along there, watching everyone warily, and finally made it to the point where he was aligned with the back entrance point of the ship. The ground there was littered with splintered wood, along with the rocks.
There was one more person he could see, milling around in a barely visible room, but they soon disappeared up a set of stairs and he took his chance. Ray slunk into the ship, all carefully silent footfalls and owlish wide eyes, looking around in the relative darkness to find any sign of where theyâd kept Llyr. Each room he checked was devoid of other people, and he grew tense with the fear that Gawain had already woken him and hurt him even more for no reason before Ray had the chance to save him.
Then there was a cold point of metal at the small of his back, a hand on his shoulder, and he couldnât think.Â
âDonât move,â a voice said, and he recognized it.
âHugh? Oh thank god, itâs you I-â
âI said donât move!â he hissed, pressing the blade in hard enough to draw blood. Ray went stiff and turned back around to face forward. He kept his breathing steady. He wouldnât let his heart race, and he wouldnât let himself panic. This was a misunderstanding, or- or something, he didnât fucking know right now.
â...whatâs up?â Ray asked, throat tightening around the words, forcing them out higher than heâd intended.Â
âYou ran,â Hugh stated simply.
âI was gonna help you, and we were gonna get out before anyone else woke up. No harm done. You know...â
âDo you know how much trouble you got me in?â he snapped, jerking Rayâs shoulder back and forcing his body against the blade. âYou wanna know what happened after you set such a great fucking example?!â
âIâm-â he tried to speak, but Hugh was dead set on saying what he had planned. Knowing him, heâd been rehearsing the coming speech in his head since whatever incident had occurred.
âThe little fucking thief ran off,â he growled, âand Iâm taking the blame for his disappearance. First you, then him, and the captainâs gonna have my head soon if I donât fix this shit. Heâs got plans for you, ya know.â
Llyr had run. That was all that mattered. Heâd gotten out of there, away from Gawain and Hugh, and he was safer wherever he was now.
âGood for him. Let him go, Hugh, and weâll get out of here ourselves.â
âGet out of here? Youâre making that sound like a good thing, Ray. I think weâll be just fine here. Captainâs the first sensible guy Iâve met in years, really.â
âIâm your captain, Hugh: not that freak. Weâre leaving and finding wherever the rest of the crew sailed off to, and thatâs final.â
âI donât take orders from you anymore, Raymond!â Hugh all but shouted in his ear. âIâm tired of you and your happy, peaceful little rules! If I gotta join up with some law abiding folks to have some decent fun, then goddammit thatâs what Iâm gonna do!â
Ray was silent for a moment, and the words hung in the air like an awful stench. Perhaps he should have seen that coming.Â
âListen up. You and I are gonna take a nice walk down the beach and find that boy, and when we do, weâre gonna bring him right back here. If you refuse to help,â he paused, trailing the blade up his back with a feather light touch, âIâll end you right here, right now.â
âWait, donât, I- wonât Gawain kill you, then? If you- if you kill me?â
âHeâll kill me anyway if I donât find Llyr, and the stupid brat would never come with me if I didnât have help. Now are you helping, or am I gonna have to explain why I got blood all over these new, clean clothes before he spills mine as well?â
Ray breathed out a wavering sigh and closed his eyes.

Hugh groaned in response, and Llyr questioned his decision to come with the pirates at all.
Hugh left quickly after that, and Ray crouched down by his side, taking the loose end of the net in hand and looking it over.
âHey, buddy, Iâm sorry about him. I promise he didnât mean it, okay? Hughâs a nice guy, he just gets a little scared sometimes. We all do,â it said, the same spark of pity and concern in its eyes as earlier. He couldnât reply, still breathing hard and shallow and trapped in the net. Llyr squirmed again, shifting his weight and only able to rock slightly back and forth, and looked back up to meet the humanâs eyes.
âRight! Uh, alright, so Iâm gonna have to roll you back over to get you out. Iâll be as careful as I canâŚâ It trailed off, and he nodded shallowly around the net. Slowly, Ray took hold of his body and rolled him to his stomach, then on to his back, then to his stomach again. He groaned at the pressure on his new injuries, but with each roll there was less and less of the net wrapped around him.
Finally, it rolled him onto his back one last time, and pulled the rest of the net off, freeing him. Llyr was grateful to finally be able to move his arms, and went to push himself off the ground.
âDo you need help? Can you stand, bud?â It reached out a hand which he gladly accepted, and shakily used the leverage to get to his feet. When he wobbled, Ray wrapped an arm around his torso to keep him up.
They walked together in silence inside the ship and to the cabins. Ray opened the door to one and waved him inside first, where he saw the redhead from earlier was already waiting, milling around the room. It was a quaint size for a human, two beds on opposite walls with a desk along the other one, but it felt so enclosed compared to the vast expanse of the sea.
âYou took a while, did something-â Floyd stopped himself, eyes going wider at the sight of Llyrâs face. The hits must have left marks. â...happen?â The human finished its sentence, but it was more of an afterthought at that point.
âHugh thought he was a thief kid and roughed him up a little before I could stop him.â Ray said, and Llyr fiddled with the edges of his cloak at the memory of that manâs glare. He couldnât imagine it was nearly as nice as his rescuer said it was, with eyes so dark and cold like that.
âOh, Iâm sorry,â Floyd looked at Llyr when it said that, like it had some fault in this matter. âHe⌠thatâs still wrong of him. If that was me⌠you knowâŚâ It trailed off, looking at Ray with a sad, conflicted expression.
âI know, I know,â it responded, and the two seemed to understand each other. Llyr looked on, confusion written across his face.
âWell, let me help at least. You had that cut that needs bandaged up, so just take a seat right on that bed.â Floyd gestured and Llyr sat, eyes trained more on the floor than anything else. âWhatâs your name, friend?â
Llyrâs gaze raised when Floyd called him its friend, and he felt a pang somewhere inside him. It hurt, but it was warm and comforting at the same time.Â
âIâm- my name is Llyr,â he said, eyes still trained on Floyd, who had turned around to grab something. When he turned back, Llyr looked away towards the wall instead.
âItâs a pleasure to meet you then, Llyr,â Floyd smiled, kneeling in front of him with a bucket of water and a cloth. âRay, can you please get him some clothes? I think thereâs some back in my dresser.âÂ
âYeah, of course,â Ray spoke for the first time since introducing him, standing up from where it leaned against the doorway and heading back through the hall. The room fell silent then as Floyd dipped its cloth into the water, wringing the extra out above the bucket.
âIâm gonna clean off your side with this, but itâs gonna sting. Try to stay still if you can,â it warns before pressing the wet cloth to his cut. The pressure against the wound hurts, and the cool water helps for a moment before it stings too. He winces, but only lets out a groan as he breathes steadily and carefully.
Floyd takes the cloth off his side and rinses it in the water again before bringing it back up. As it presses it to his cut, though, the ship gives a sudden lurch and the floor tilts just enough to the side that the human loses its balance. It falls, and in trying to steady itself, lands its hand on Llyrâs side. He shrieks at the sudden pressure, falling sideways as well and just catching himself on the bed.
âIâm sorry! Iâm sorry, Llyr, I really didnât mean to⌠the tide must be coming in again.âÂ
Llyr got what he meant there, at least. It had been low tide when he arrived, and the waves always got stronger when it was rising. He never considered how it would affect a vessel at sea.
âI think itâs pretty clean anyway, now. Iâll just bandage it up before these waves hit us any harder, alright?â
Llyr nodded, hands once again fidgeting with the sealskin cloak.
Tumblr was fighting me on the reblog, so I just made a new post. Thank you so much to @spookyboywhump for tagging me in that picrew chain; I went a little overboard and had a lot of fun!
In order, these are Percival, Floyd, Llyr, Hugh, Ray, and Mabel all from my pirate universe. Iâm going to go into a bit more detail under a cut because of course I am, you guys know me, so open that up if you want some excited appearance rambles!
Oh hello, welcome to the forbidden Keep Reading land! Glad to have you here. Just gonna do this list style before I start going wild with transitions or something dumb like that.
Percival - Ah, itâs been ages since weâve seen this man, hasnât it? If youâve been around for a good long while, you might remember me doing a drawing of him and Floyd a while back, and details on both of their appearances have definitely shifted since then. This picrew is more accurate, especially in the hairstyle. The color should be warmer and have streaks of blond in it, but otherwise it definitely looks like him to me.
Some more details to note is that no picrew will ever get his eyes right. They should be lighter and lean a little more towards orange with yellow highlights that are especially prominent when heâs using magic. Iâm not sure if he has his nose pierced in canon, but he does have his ears pierced and oh yeah those snake earrings were definitely used because of his reputation as The Serpent. And I love snakes a completely normal amount but thatâs totally irrelevant definitely not a driving force what?
(fun side note: i was gonna give him the lemon background because he is a sucker for anything acidic and strong, hence his really weird obsession with vinegar that is the only thing he wants to tell me about himself most days, but then this one looked really pretty so I kept it)
Floyd - We just saw him again if youâve been keeping up with the Llyr and the Pirates storyline, though this picrew is based more off of his starring role and captivity in Persistence. He doesnât have piercings in anything weâve seen so far, but he will canonically get them at some point :D
Other than that, everythingâs pretty straightforward. Heâs got his collar from Percival, which is technically a more brownish leather and just a little thicker than that, and his eye color should be a little lighter, leaning towards blue-green. Oh, and I gave him a pass on my attempts at kinda realistic clothing because I thought that Floyd would absolutely love this shirt. A shame he isnât in our time really... I think he would love a lot of funky patterns and stuff in modern fashion. aNYWAYS-
Llyr - My sealy son! Iâve really gotta see if thereâs a seal picrew I could use to design his other form lol. But hereâs what heâs meant to look like! I think this hairstyle was meant to be used as braids or dreadlocks, but it was the only messy looking one I could find. Because ever since Llyr turned human, his hair has been awfully maintained, and by that I mean Not At All itâs so tangled you couldnât even pull a brush through it without a good amount of effort. But all the colors are correct here!
If I could very quickly point you in the direction of his cloak, thatâs the closest I could get to the way he wears his seal skin when itâs not being taken away from him (*glares at the Offending Individual(s)*). He isnât wearing a shirt under it because clothes are still super weird feeling to him, and heâd rather go with the bare minimum than feel fabric moving around and clinging to him all day. And heâs being assertive and indignant, because Of Course He Is.
Hugh - Aha, a design! A design for the largely descriptionless bastard man! The hair is pretty accurate for how he wears it currently, though he definitely prefers it shorter than that so it isnât curling into his face all the time. The color should be darker, closer to a traditional brunette tone, and this picrew is so invalid only because I couldnât give him the beard that was the only thing I pictured for so long. Hugh has a full chin beard that he also keeps fairly short, but he isnât able to grow too much of a mustache so that stays as stubble on his upper lip.Â
As for physique, heâs definitely a lot more muscley than this picrew allowed him to be. The outfit he has on is definitely close to something he got his first night on Gawainâs ship, though a little more tight fitting than it is in reality. Otherwise, I donât have too much to say on him! Smarmy grin and half lidded eyes is his signature expression for harassing people, but those eyes open up to look a little more friendly most other times.
Ray - Ahhh my sunshine child, always trying his best! *stares at both of my story wips with him* Heâs completely fine, both physically and emotionally! But I digress. Hereâs Ray on a classic, happy day! This picrew did such a good job with his hair. Wavy, ending just above his shoulders, and sometimes tied up in a ponytail or bun. This honestly looks so accurate to him and I love it.
A note on his coat that also extends to Percival, this choice isnât super accurate to his coat? Percivalâs should be dark red/magenta and Rayâs should be more of a navy blue/green, and both of them should be more tailored, but these were the closest I could get them. My captains really like their fun coats (except Gawain. He likes to stick to protocol uniforms, which in the Law Abiding Business does not include a fun coat)
Mabel - Last, but certainly not least! Mabel is fantastic and this picrew fits her very very well. That shirt is definitely made of some softer flannel-ish material and she wears it on windier or brisker days. Those stripey shirts are some of her favorite patterns aside from No Pattern.Â
Oh and her hair I really had a blast making here. It wasnât working out at first because there arenât a whole lot of options, but I thought to have her put it up and then include that little braid bit and with some curly bangs and little loose bits on the side it really came together! Yellow looked cute with her and I didnât want the beautiful fruit backgrounds to go to waste, so I gave her some lemons because why not.Â
Ah and one last note. The only reason yâall arenât getting a Gawain picrew as well is because 1) even numbers,,,, good,,,,, and actually because 2) he looked absolutely cursed in this picrew and it didnât represent him quite as well as Iâd like. Maybe Iâll doodle him out sometime so you guys can see what he looks like....
Sooo.... yeah.... that was certainly. A Ramble. If youâre still here, Iâm so very sorry. Iâm going to go get something to eat now. Ah, and everyone I would have tagged has already taken care of this since I took all day, so anyone can go ahead if theyâd like.
