Key was raised at a rural temple in the Esha Empire. He had been left at the temple as an infant, with no knowledge of his birth family. The High Clergyman of the temple took responsibility for him, raising him as his own and eventually granting Key his surname, marking him as both ward and heir in faith.
Growing up within the temple walls shaped Key’s understanding of the Temples God. Their teachings steadfastness, protection, and moral endurance—were not abstract beliefs to Key; they were the structure of his daily life. At the age of 10, The Temples God appeared to him and formed a Contact in a dream, placing a divine mark upon him. Through this contract, Key was granted a fraction of the Gods power.
Recognizing the significance of this blessing, the High Clergyman began training Key in body, mind, and spirit. By the time Key reached seventeen, he was sent to join the Church Knight Order, a militant sect within the Church dedicated to the Gods defense and doctrine. Key proved disciplined, resolute, and devout, rising through the ranks with unusual speed until he achieved the rank of Lieutenant, Second Class.
His first mission as second-in-command of a company became the defining tragedy of his life. The operation went catastrophically wrong. Half the platoon was killed, and during the chaos, the Lieutenant, First Class—Key’s commanding officer—was mortally wounded and died in Key’s arms. From that battlefield, Key took up his fallen commander’s sword, not as a trophy, but as a burden he would carry for the rest of his life.
Though no formal crime was ever placed upon him, the higher authorities of the Order judged Key unfit for continued command, citing the losses under his leadership. At the age of thirty, he was forced into retirement from the Order.
Key returned to the temple where he had been raised, burdened by guilt and uncertainty. The clergyman that raised him told him to use his blessing to for others outside the church.
Obeying his father , Key left the temple and joined the Broken Sword Mercenary Guild, taking up the life of an adventurer—not in search of glory, but in pursuit of redemption, protection.
