TörtĂ©nete szorosan összefonĂłdik a város sorsával, a mĂłr hĂłdĂtástĂłl kezdve az 1755-ös nagy földrengĂ©s utáni ĂşjjáépĂtĂ©sig. Ha nem korán reggel Ă©rkezel ide, szinte mozdulni sem lehet a sok turistátĂłl.
A kilátĂł mellett állĂł Igreja de Santa Luzia (Szent LĂşcia-templom) eredete a 12. századra, Portugália alapĂtásának idejĂ©re nyĂşlik vissza.
A templomot a Máltai Lovagrend (akkoriban Szent János-rend) Ă©pĂttette I. Alfonz király uralkodása idejĂ©n.
A helyszĂn stratĂ©giai fontosságĂş volt, hiszen a rĂ©gi városfal (Cerca Velha) mentĂ©n helyezkedett el, rálátással a Tejo-folyĂłra Ă©s a kikötĹ‘re.
Lisszabon nagy rĂ©szĂ©hez hasonlĂłan az eredeti közĂ©pkori templom Ă©s a környezĹ‘ Ă©pĂĽletek szinte teljesen megsemmisĂĽltek az 1755-ös katasztrofális földrengĂ©sben. A ma láthatĂł templomot a 18. század második felĂ©ben Ă©pĂtettĂ©k Ăşjjá barokk stĂlusban, Mateus Vicente de Oliveira Ă©pĂtĂ©sz tervei alapján. A kilátĂłteraszt Ă©s a kertet fokozatosan alakĂtották ki, hogy mĂ©ltĂł keretet adjanak a panorámának Ă©s a vallási Ă©pĂĽletnek.
A kilátĂł dĂ©li falán találhatĂł kĂ©t hatalmas kĂ©k-fehĂ©r csempekĂ©p (azulejo) a portugál törtĂ©nelem kĂ©t sorsfordĂtĂł pillanatát örökĂti meg:
Lisszabon ostroma (1147): Az egyik panel azt a pillanatot ábrázolja, amikor a keresztény seregek visszafoglalják a Szent György-várat a móroktól.
