Got done watching the Godzilla vs Kiryu duology the other day (via Tubi)
I really liked them alot π
Godzilla was in tip top shade in these films. He was quite intimidating and awe inspiring. I really liked his fight with both Mothra and Kiryu in the second film.
I liked Kiryu's design a lot, it's very sleek and futuristic. I kinda felt bad for it. It's basically living a shell (no pun intended) of it's original existence. It's got a 2 hour power limit while also being basically a slave to the Japanese government.
The Kamoebas cameo was pretty Neat, I like Turtles. Even though it's just a corpse when we sea it.
I like the nuance regarding Kiryu, both the the Japanese government and the Shobijin/Mothra make great points for why and why not Kiryu should exist respectively.
I Absolutely Adored some of the science behind the decision to use the 1954 Godzilla's skeleton for Kiryu via the whole "DNA computer" thing, it being faster than a regular computer because the DNA has four bases whereas normal computers have only ones and zeros. Personally. I don't know how the hell that works, but it sounds neat. Earlier in the first film we see Dr. Yuhara use similar technology to recreate extinct Trilobites. It's a type of tech Ben "Wizard" Singer best described on an episode of death battle as "Cyber Necromancy".
Akane was by far my favorite human character from both films. She's clearly got survivors guilt from her first encounter with Godzilla and she spends the rest of the first film training to pilot Kiryu so she can avenge her fallen comrades. I like how at the end she ultimately understands Kiryu is it's own being with a soul and they ultimately defeat godzilla together (at least till the sequel).
I haven't watched Mothra (1961) yet, so I don't know what's going on with Shinichi Chujo in Tokyo S.O.S nor will I pretend to. I definitely need to see that film, it seems intresting.
The Mothra Song/Prayer sung by the Shobijin felt very soothing and rather relaxing. I'm listening to it more often π
I felt sad when Mothra sacrificed herself, she just wanted to protect her children and Japan. Luckily, her death wasn't in vain.
I'm definitely going to miss Suitmation in Godzilla films, although the cgi in both the Monsterverse and Godzilla Minus One is great.
Overall, I highly recommend checking these films out.
