I hate my PhD 🙃 so tired of this project, I dread going into lab everyday… my motivation has completely evaporated. I want to care but I can’t bring myself to care. I stupidly resent my coworker for being so motivated in his project.
We are going into hibernation for a while, but will return when we have fresh univeristy topics to cover. In the mean time please find our new index on the substack and enjoy the posts as you see fit. Thank you for your readership.

How to Write a Research Problem Statement That Actually Gets Approved
It is the first thing your doctoral committee evaluates. Here is how to write one that is specific, justified, and impossible to reject.
A research problem statement is the foundation of your entire PhD study. It defines what is wrong, missing, or unknown in existing knowledge and establishes why your research is necessary to address it. Write it well and your committee approves your proposal with confidence. Write it vaguely and every subsequent chapter inherits that weakness.
Most problem statements fail for one of three reasons: they are too broad, too obvious, or unsupported by evidence from the literature. Here is how to avoid all three.
Define the problem in terms of a gap not a topic
A topic is not a problem. "Digital marketing in rural India" is a topic. "The lack of empirical evidence on the effectiveness of WhatsApp-based marketing for FMCG brands in Tier 3 Indian cities" is a researchable problem specific, bounded, and clearly absent from existing knowledge. The narrower and more precise your problem statement, the stronger your proposal becomes. Suhi's Research Topic Selection service helps scholars sharpen a broad interest into a specific, evidence-supported research gap.
Ground the gap in the literature with citations
Do not assert that something is unstudied demonstrate it. Cite the studies that have addressed related questions and show specifically what they have not addressed. "While Kumar (2021) examined digital marketing in urban India and Sharma (2022) studied rural consumer behaviour broadly, no study has specifically investigated WhatsApp-based marketing effectiveness in Tier 3 cities" is a justified gap. An assertion without citations is an opinion, not a research problem.
State the consequences of the gap remaining unaddressed
Why does it matter that this gap exists? What continues to happen or fails to happen if your research is not conducted? Policy decisions made without evidence, practitioners operating on assumptions, theoretical frameworks that remain incomplete name the specific consequences. This is what convinces a committee that your research is necessary rather than merely interesting.
Connect directly to your research question
Your problem statement should close by transitioning naturally into your research question the specific question your study is designed to answer. The logical chain must be unbroken: here is what we do not know, here is why it matters, and therefore here is the question this study will investigate. Suhi's Research Proposal service helps scholars build problem statements and research questions that form a coherent, compelling foundation for their entire study.
A well-written problem statement does not just describe what is missing. It makes the reader feel the absence and understand clearly why filling it is worth the years of research about to follow.
Length guide:Â In a synopsis or proposal, a problem statement is typically two to four paragraphs. In your thesis introduction, it may extend to one to two pages. In every case, precision matters more than length. A tight, well-evidenced three paragraphs is always stronger than six vague ones.
