There is a severe death in the academic appeal of Russell Group Universities. To any american viewers, Russell Group = Ivy League.
In 1994, 17 Universities met in Hotel Russell in London, forming the unofficial ‘voice for research institutes’. Since then, they have expanded to form a union of 24 universities that are involved strongly in global academics and politics.
Universities are already facing a decline. People are realising that academia is not the only way to succeed in life, and apprenticeships are becoming increasingly popular. Both of these are opening more doors, and young people are branching out.
Russell Group Universities are academically selective. This is exemplified in their admission process. They already ask for high grades, AAA* for example, but on top of these already incredible grades, they expect their own admission exam and an interview process, and even then you might not get an offer.
There is also an economic side of this decline. Cities such as London, Oxford, and Cambridge are expensive to live in. A student cannot fund this lifestyle, and I’d like to highlight University of Oxford in particular in which students are not allowed to work, but are still expected to thrive in the city. The cost of living, compared with great grades that can only be expected from rigorous tutoring, silently funnel the students so that the rich stay educated and the poor fail.
Finally, the social atmosphere that the Russell Group universities foster is welcoming to the students who grew up in wealth and academics, but is alienating and intimidating to middle class students who are the first in their family to attend any university, particularly a Russell Group. For this very valid reason, they don’t bother, and apply to somewhere that is more welcoming and affordable.
This self fulfilling prophecy keeps the Russell Groups as exclusive societies of rich, privileged individuals, whilst underrepresented communities go to other universities, if any at all. As a result, the universities with political influence have a disproportionate amount of representation in their members.
This ramble sort of got away from me and I forgot where I was going with it. I hope it is thought provoking enough.
