7/28 - Council Meetings (part 11)
Simon was glad for just how busy he was being kept after his announcement. The new rule about council members holding only that office, as well as the shuffling of staff, and preparation to welcome an envoy from the Demon Realm whilst also preparing to send their own there, had all been more than enough reason for him to avoid Gavin.Â
Honestly, his reaction was more or less what he had expected too. His -Ex- friend was shocked, angry, and panicked as his and the faithâs carefully laid plans started to crumble around them. Gavin couldn't pull on his strings emotionally; the faith had lost a good number of people in high positions of power with the shuffle, and they had lost most (hopefully all, but more likely simply most) of the staffing positions in the palace that they had worked to fill with their brown members.Â
I felt safer than I had in weeks, and honestly more clear-headed than ever. It was like a fog that was obstructing my view was lifted.Â
Sinte said it was pettiness, Fig said it was clarity. I think it's just adrenaline and that will collapse into an early grave once all of this is over.Â
âSimon! Your notes!â Another thing that had changed was that both my younger siblings were becoming more involved in court and the matters of the kingdom.Â
The thinking is that until I wed and have heirs, my heirs, Sarah and Samuel, will be my heirs and thus need to learn how to rule in some capacity.Â
âIt's good to have a backup plan.â Sinte had told me cautiously, âJust in case.â She was a military person, and a person of the people. She was thinking of the kingdom's future, and for that I was thankful.Â
No matter how awkward it was to think of the backup plan involving me being dead.Â
Sarah has begun taking audiences with the common folk and is starting to sit in on less complicated meetings about internal affairs. Samuel, being only eight, is still far too young to be actively involved, but his education is becoming similar to what mine was at his age.Â
âCome in!â I call to the door, which swings open shortly after to admit both Sarah and Sinte to my office.Â
âSinte, what can I help you with?âÂ
âI'm resigning from my council office, unfortunately. Though I have found a list of worthy replacements!â She places a rather thick folder of paperwork on my desk, which contains her formal resignation in order to keep her military leadership position and her list of replacements. âTheyâre all good people with many years of experience and are still active members of the military community, though they are retired from service.âÂ
âAnd I have your notes!â Sarah adds again, handing over the notebook she and I had been using to handle audiences and to answer any of her ruling-related questions. âThe audiences were pretty simple today; almost everyone had the same concerns.âÂ
âWhat were they?â Everyone agreeing to be worried about the same thing was never good⊠It could mean war, drought, famine, or a potential uptown.Â
âTheyâre all worried, or excited,m or curious, about the demon realm alliance.â Saraha shrugs. She had only ever gone over the demon realmâs history with the rest of our lands briefly in history, as most children did, so she didn't see the âbig dealâ in having an alliance with them.Â
âBeing the first just makes us special!â she had declared, much to Fig's delight. It didn't help that Sarah was magically gifted, and Demons were known to be great workers of Magic and Magic artifacts; she was excited to meet other people like her in that regard, as it was a rare skill amongst humans.Â
âI seeâŠâ I sigh softly, "I'll draft an address for you to make and then I'll make one myself later on as well.âÂ
âDon't forget that the Demon Realm Envoy will be here soon.â Sinte reminds me, âMy men sent a letter that they should be here in a few days' time.âÂ
Sinte had insisted on having her own people escort the envoy to the palace from the border. Usually it would have been the guards' jobs, as they handled internal military affairs, but with an unknown number of them being plants by the Codos faith, it was a safer bet to have Sinteâs military escort guide them.
I had sent a letter ahead explaining that there was an internal issue requiring the guards' attention as an excuse for why the military was guiding the envoy to the Demon King, who had taken it quite well. He had admitted that they had no such âinternal military groupâ and thus our own envoy would be escorted by their regular military as well.Â
He was a very chatty king, especially through letters. Ever since our meeting and my first letter about the envoys he had been sending me ones every few weeks.Â
It was⊠odd to have a penpal. Perhaps more odd that it was the Demon King. But he didn't seem to think it weird, and Fig explained that Demons were generally reclusive creatures to outsiders but very social amongst themselves, so they believe it to be a good sign.Â
