I think it's very worth remembering that "Friend" has had, as far as I'm aware, at least one mandatory appearance in the game: during Ralsei's exposition in the beginning of chapter 3. Of course, this is contrasted by the other instances of it in-game being more obscure and within optional contexts.
I've seen, at times, that it's the very nature of those instances that gets used as a rebuttal against ambitious Friend speculation. Basically, with the way in which one has to actively go out of their way to find it in most cases, it puts a reasonable dent in any theories that hype up its significance. To be honest, I was originally under the belief that Friend couldn't possibly end up being anything more than something restricted to a small level of relevance...
...but just, not only have its background appearances remained very consistent since chapter 2, its presence is truly reinforced by an actual foreground appearance. It really makes me wonder. I still can't say I'm confident in exactly how involved it will be, but it just has to mean something, even if very little. It has, as far as I'm aware, two appearances in the Spamton Sweepstakes event from a little bit pre-chapter 3. Obviously, the sweepstakes were an optional thing that weren't even within the source material itself, and much more casual players of Deltarune probably may not even know about it.
But still, think about what that adds to the general amount of emphasis it has! It has shown up a VERY persistent number of times, and not even just in the form of its sprite; you'd be surprised by how many times it's been alluded to with a recurring color motif. Regardless of the nature of every hint, it doesn't rule out any level of relevance entirely. Or maybe it does...one can never be too certain at this point in time.
While thinking about it, I gotta bring attention to this really well put-together -> Friend-focused doc that I found outside tumblr. It's a wealth of information on this facet of Deltarune. I haven't read through it all the way myself, so for that, there may be something noteworthy I missed mentioning here. I suggest giving it a read, it might bring some revelations to you.
