Can you tell me what muscle groups ice dancers focus on as far as strength/conditioning? Obviously the glutes but Scott’s traps are pretty developed too. And what about the men vs women? Different muscle focus?
Hi anon! I may not be the best person to ask this question to as I have pretty much no knowledge about muscle anatomy whatsoever, but I’ll try my best (and probably sound like an uneducated fool in the process, so I apologize).
My short answer: Everything. Especially for off ice training. Skating pretty much uses all of your muscles (even arms). In general though, I think a lot of skaters target their leg muscles (quads and glutes in particular), as these are what are primarily used in skating. Also, having a strong core is very important so that skaters can maintain a good posture and balance while on the ice. (Having a strong core is especially important for my queen Tessa Virtue so that she does not overwork her calf muscles and therefore prevents worsening her compartment syndrome.)
While skaters pretty much condition their entire body off the ice, certain muscles get stronger from just being on the ice. These mostly include leg muscles from having a good knee bend (think of it as you’re more or less holding a squat for almost five minutes), as well as glutes from holding extensions as well as just the movements involved in skating in general.
I don’t know what any differences would be between men and women as I am not a man, and also am not an expert on this topic in any sense (athletic trainer, skating coach, physical therapist, professional ice dancer, etc.). My guess is that men and women have similar training, but men may have more focus on the arms since they have to lift the women? I’m not really sure.
Thanks anon! Hopefully that helps you out. Again, I’m not an expert on this subject in any way, shape, or form so I apologize for anything that might be completely false (also that this is so long...yikes).

Day 251 Gymless: Chest and Triceps
4 Days until the move! 😱🏝🌋
I got a short interval run in this evening. Not the best pace, and it was colder than it looked outside- but it felt good anyway.
Workout:
5 down dog/cobra push ups
10 modified Bench presses
10 banded Chest flies
10 tricep extensions
10 banded Skull crushers
1-10-1 push up triangle (done later this evening)
Wow, you have so much willpower and work so hard, you’re so motivating!! 💪 Just have a little question, you don’t have to answer, but do you have any good exercises for back muscles? Thank you and hope you have a great day!! 😁
Thank you so much! I struggle to scrounge up motivation for at-home workouts so it’s so nice to know people appreciate seeing the effort.
And Yes!! I have several exercises for back muscles that require some light equipment.
With bands: lat pull downs, and some row variations.
With other equipment: wide-grip pull ups, bent over flies
With Bodyweight: Superman’s! (Back extensions). There’s so many variations of these- you can do them as regular sets, pulsing, 30 sec holds, anchor your feet under something and extend higher...these are great.
Does anyone else have good suggestions for at-home exercises for back?
