In Defense of Knot: Lost in Translation
Let the record reflect that Knot is an odd little duck of a show, and as a person who has multiple issues with omegaverse, I was already hesitant to watch, BUT I think about 47% of people's issue with the show is they are watching it with the original English subs, which are doing the show dirty; therefore, I'm not watching Knot the day it comes out.
The English subtitles from iQIYI the day it drops are not using the correct verb tenses, missing objective pronouns, and are not conveying the seriousness of emotions, yet the Spanish subs are great (thanks @babyangelsky for telling us) and the YouTube subs for the edited version two days later are good too. iQIYI does correct the subs eventually, but it takes a few days. For example, in the original English subs, Nakhun said "I already bite" <- present tense, no objective pronoun. Sounds like a caveman. Now, he says, "I'd bitten his neck" <- past perfect tense with an object
Might seem minor, but ALL the subs are changed. Every single one, so when rewatching the scene, it's clear how out of it Nakhun was because even the misused words are fixed (everything is written the EXACT way it was in the original subs)
Original - Why did you bite? I do not know. I can't control my self. The smell is so attractive to me. It's like the smell surround me. and when I realize I already bite.
Revised - Why did you bite him? I don't know. I lost all self-control. His scent was too alluring to me, which consumed my every thought. Before I even realized what I was doing, I'd bitten his neck.
Because iQIYI has already revised the subs for the first two episodes (thanks @mysterygrl20 for telling us), I went to the high seas since my fellow pirates like to grab things the day they air to give you examples of the changes, like in the first episode, Phatsa isn't confused by the Alpha's behavior; he thinks it's odd.
Original - You are confused too, right?
Revised - You think it's weird too, right?
Once again, seems minor, but the lax choice of words to depict an emotion is a constant issue with the original subs.
Original - Are you mad? / What are you?
Revised - Are you insane? What even are you? Some kind of monster?
The original Spanish subs conveyed that Phatsa thought Nakhun's reaction was monstrous but the original English ones just made him seem confused about who he was talking to or something, and I cannot stress this enough, every single line of the show is revised days later in the iQIYI subs.
"Being concerned or being harassed" -> "Bro, this isn't concern—it's harassment."
I'm reading the MDL comments, and I know some people think the subs aren't that big of an issue, but watching with quality subs is the difference between chatting with your four-year old cousin versus your three-decade long best friend. The revised subs are far more natural, give more context, and have more emotion.
"You've never been a burden to this house" -> "You were never a burden to this family."
"If things keep going like this, one day I'll die of heartbreak" -> "If this keeps up, I'll stress myself to an early grave."
So, once again, I'm saving this as possibly a Sunday watch so I can experience the phenomenon of male pregnancy on the Lord's day as God and the subbers intended because I want to judge this show based on its wild ass plot rather than its weak ass subs.
