365 DC Comics Heroes & Villains Paper Cut-Outs
Johnny, Jesse and Kid Quick
Three heroes have fought crime by way of an ancient formula that allows one to tap into the primal energies of the Speed Force. The first was Johnny Chambers, a newspaper photography and war correspondent who was close friends with a brilliant mathematician named Ezra Gill.
Professor Gill had discovered an ancient papyrus removed from the tomb of Pharaoh Amen of the 7th Dynasty of ancient Egypt. Having deciphered this papyrus, Grill found that it entailed a mystical mathematical formula. The theorem itself reads as ‘3x2(9yz)4a’ and reciting it allowed enables one to tap into the cosmic energy field that governs velocity. With a degree of control over this ‘speed force’ one can move at incredibly fast speeds.
Before he died, Professor Gill passed along he formula to Chamber and instructed him on how to use it. Greatly inspired by The Flash (Jay Garrick), Chambers decided to use the formula to operated as the costume superhero known as ‘Johnny Quick.’
The hero served as a member of The All-Star Squadron, fighting for the Allied Force during the Second World War. Following the war, Johnny helped to form a new iteration of The Justice Society. He would ultimately marry his Society teammate, Liberty Belle (Libby Lawrence). The pair had a daughter whom they named Jessica.
In her adolescence, Jessica (or ‘Jesse’) discovered she had inherited the same super strength powers possessed by her mother. As a teenager, her father passed along the formula for tapping into the speed force so the young woman now possessed the super powers of both her parents. This aside, Jesse chose to forgo a career as a superhero and instead pursued a civilian life and went to college.
Some time later, Jesse was recruited to step in the speedster guardian of Keystone City during a time where the Flash was missing. Thereafter, she was asked to join Nightwing’s newly reformed team, The Titans. Herein, Jesse wore a costume reminiscent of that worn by her father and operated under the alias of ‘Jesse Quick.’
Jesse briefly retired from heroism following a tragic mission where two of her Titan colleagues perished in battle. Sometime later, Jesse returned having revived her mother’s mantle as the new Liberty Belle and served as a member of The Justice Society. She also married her fellow Society member Hourman (Rick Tyler). More recently, Jesse has returned to her original outfit and codename.
In the alternate reality of Earth 11, Jesse Chamber is the aunt of the next hero to use the 3x2(9yz)4a formula to battle crime. This new hero goes by the name ‘Kid Quick’ and actress as a member of Teen Justice before becoming the youngest member of Earth 11’s Justice League.
In the midst of the Future State storyline, Kid Quick was able to use their connection to the Speed Force to facilitate inter-dimensional travel, thus enabling the Justice League to put a stop to a multiversal conspiracy. More recently, Kid Quick has used this ability to transport themselves to Earth Prime where they had adventures alongside the Flash Family.
Actress Violet Beane portrays a version of Jesse Quick in the television series The Flash. The heroine first appeared in the pages of Justice Society of America Vol. 2 #1 (1992). Johnny Quick first appeared int he pages of More Fun Comics #71 (1941); Jesse Quick debuted in Justice Society of America Vol. 2 #1 (1992); and Kid Quick premiered in the pages of DC's Very Merry Multiverse (2021).
