RESTRICTING . Have you ever told yourself “I really need to eat less ____” (fill in the blank pizza, fries, ice cream etc.) and then all you could do was think about it and then when you finally bought it you binged it? . That is a normal psychological response to telling yourself you can’t have something. One of the most important aspects in learning to #eatintuitively has been granting myself full permission to eat what I want, when I want. . Did I eat a TON of sweets at first? 100% Did my body eventually learn to trust it has access to these things and actually gave me a real sense of freedom around these foods to the point where I rarely feel the need to binge them? UNLEARNING DIET CULTURE . Something I’m currently dealing with is the unlearning of negativity around gaining weight. . I have spent decades of my life trying to shrink my body. So this weekend when I weighed myself and learned I was the heaviest I’ve ever been I felt the contraction in my gut. . It has been two full days of me gently reminding myself I don’t owe anyone skinny, that there is absolutely nothing wrong with weight gain, that I can in fact trust my body to tell me what it needs, and that this is a sign that this is what nourishment looks like for me right now. . It’s been a lot of back and forth for me this weekend of feeling my fear, feeling and seeing the part of me who is experiencing that fear and letting her know she is so f*cking loved. . Letting her know she deserves to eat and her body is worthy of respect no matter what size clothes I wear or what the scale says. . Intuitive eating is a JOURNEY and a hard one at that. We all have good days and bad days. . But yesterday when I went on a hike with my pup and this amazing vessel I call my earthly home climbed that mountain with absolutely no trouble I remembered why it’s all worth it. . I used to pass out from low blood pressure from how little I ate. . I used to feel my bones sticking out of my body. . I used to be more concerned with how I looked than how I felt. . And while I’m always growing and learning I am so much better off today than I was then. I’m so much more capable physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually because how I feel is my guiding light now, not some bullshit fantasy forced down my throat by diet culture. . So here’s a repost to shed some light. ・・・ As exciting as it is to see #IntuitiveEating gain popularity, it’s also important to recognize that misrepresentations, misapplications, and misappropriations abound. Diet culture is really sneaky and is co-opting Intuitive Eating big time. This makes learning how to spot fake Intuitive Eating an incredibly valuable skill! Here are red flags I commonly see: * Intuitive Eating is NOT the absence of counting macros on the weekend. There is no counting macros or points with IE. * Intuitive Eating is NOT your ‘cheat day’. * Intuitive Eating is NOT aligned with any weight loss food plan, including keto or any program with food rules for the purpose of shrinking your body. * Intuitive Eating is about creating a healthy relationship with food, mind, and body. It’s also about bringing joy and pleasure back to the experience of eating. It’s NOT about the pursuit of weight loss. * Intuitive Eating is not a diet: it's a journey of learning and discovery—not pass or fail. There are no rules, just the 10 principles which are guide posts. You and only you get to decide what tastes/feels best in your body. You are the boss of you—you are in charge! * Intuitive Eating is far more nuanced than "eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full." It's an integration of mind-body knowledge, recognizing that life gets hectic and busy at times. Sometimes, for example, your lunch break may be before you're physically hungry - that's okay! This is where your mind knowledge comes in: your body still needs nourishment before a busy afternoon. * Intuitive Eating is Health at Every Size aligned.
