I Feel Fat by Nina Manolson
Sitting in my therapist’s too-soft sofa I’d exclaim with deep despair.
I feel fat
And patiently, week after week she’d say:
If you weren’t feeling fat, what would you be feeling?
It took me months to understand the question.
What do you mean if I wasn’t feeling fat?
I DO feel fat
I feel unacceptable.
I should DO something about the number on the scale
I should fix my non-perfect body.
No really, this is ALL about my size!
I believed it.
Until I didn’t
Until the cultural brainwashing started to thaw
Fat is NOT a feeling.
Fat is a size
It’s a descriptor
FEELING fat is a placeholder
It’s a placeholder for so many feelings that don’t have words.
Feelings that don’t have permission to be felt
Feelings that don’t know how to go out, so they just turn back on me and attack my self-worth.
I decoded FEELING FAT
It means….
I feel
Sad
Mad
Disappointed
Angry
Overwhelmed
Confused
Uncomfortable
Jealous
and every other feeling
And sometimes it was easier to FEEL FAT.
It’s familiar
It’s the known pain
Instead of the terror of the deeper feeling
underneath the fat.
But here’s the secret.
That deeper feeling has wisdom
It doesn’t tear you to shreds.
It doesn’t disown your body
It invites you home
It invites you to your knowing.
to your innate wisdom
So, my question to you is….
If you weren’t feeling fat
What would you be feeling?
~ Nina Manolson

I was so honoured to have @ninamanolson read her incredible poem ‘I Feel Fat’ on this week’s episode of @trainhappypodcast. If you struggle with body image, then this is a really important episode for you!! I have read this poem to clients, on retreats and in workshops I’ve hosted because Nina’s poem so powerfully puts into words a big piece of the body image puzzle that gets so overlooked. Because as Nina says, feeling fat is often a placeholder for what’s *really* going on that we often don’t have the language to express. So it’s much easier to blame our bodies or try to fix them, to ease the discomfort of feeling emotions we don’t want or don’t know how to feel. We discuss all of this and so much more when it comes to body image, including: ✨ The desire for weight loss when working on your relationship with food, movement & body image. ✨ If it’s not about changing your body, then what is it about? ✨ How body image can impact relationships & intimacy. ✨ Body image & pregnancy. Plus lots more! I really hope you enjoy this one. [Transcript/written poem will follow in next post.]

Let’s talk about the constraints on our bodies. Even when we find clothes that fit, we’re often left with visible marks or sometimes redness where our clothes have been sitting. This is especially common with more restrictive clothing like jeans. I’m here to tell you that these marks are normal! Just because you’re left with them doesn’t mean you’re “too big”. Any body can get these, no matter their shape or size! You can be a size 6 or a size 26; you’re still going to get marks left from restrictive or constraining clothing!! It’s nothing to feel worried or embarrassed about. If your clothes feel like they fit, and they’re comfortable, then that’s the most important thing. Also muffin tops are NORMAL and so are STRETCH MARKS!!! The sooner we realise that these things are apparent on the majority of bodies, the sooner we’ll all love and accept ourselves a little more✨
Don't remember if ever posted this? 🤔 But here's a cute Princess Peach from last September! 💕✨
You know what would be a good story? a fat girl vampire.
can you imagine?
“I’ve never seen you eat are you insecure” “no…”
“here let me lift that for you” “I got it, thanks” *uses inhuman strength to lift bags*
“I’ve never seen you go to the beach, do you have trouble shopping for a bathing suit” “haha… yeah”
“There’s no way that girl can catch me… she’s huge!” “Hello, dinner.” *running with super fast vampire speed*
“She can’t fit in here! I’m safe!” *turns into a gas and slips under the door*
“How come you never go out?” “Well, I never get invited to parties…”
“Come to the gym with me! We should lose weight” “Not in a thousand years.” (incidentally, that’s when she was last alive.)
“You need to go on a diet!” “I’ll start with you.” *literally eats that person*

Every photo in this carousel is a different version of me waiting.
Waiting to be smaller. Waiting to be worthy. Waiting to be loved. Waiting to be enough.
That’s my why. ❤️
I continue to talk about fat acceptance because I don’t want another little girl growing up believing she has to earn her worth by becoming smaller.

I've seen a fair amount of fat liberation activists explain that they have always been fat, they're not about to stop, and that's natural and beautiful and fine. That's an incredibly important message.
What I've seen less - and what I want to remind people of - is this: if you've become fat, that's also natural and beautiful and fine.
When you're a fat person who has been thin in the past, that comes with its own brand of shaming. People take your history of thinness as proof that you don't have to be fat. You often fear the look of disappointed surprise in the eyes of someone you haven't met since you were thin. People try to determine "what happened". They don't see your fat body as just you, but as a sort of symptom that isn't part of you.
Becoming fat is not a tragedy, it's not a sign of failure, it's not a bad or shameful thing. The thin you is not the Real you. You are always real and always worthy of freedom, respect and peace. You are allowed to be fat no matter how or when you became fat.
