New submersible pumps in discharge tube with a maximum flow rate of 8000 m³/h for a wide range of applications
The new AmaCan D submersible pumps in discharge tube are designed for low life cycle costs. (© KSB SE & Co. KGaA)  The new KSB submersible pump in discharge tube design has an open multi-vane impeller. The type series has been named AmaCan D. Its main application is transporting large volumes of municipal or industrial water as well as wastewater from stormwater, drainage and irrigation pumping stations. When selected with optional corrosion-resistant and abrasion-resistant materials the type series can also be used in water pollution and flood control or in seawater aquaculture systems. The pump generates a maximum flow rate of 8000 m³/h and a maximum discharge head of about 30 m. The highest motor rating available as standard is 340 kW. Priorities set by the developers were to achieve a high operating reliability of the waste water hydraulic systems as well as high hydraulic efficiencies. Here, they were focusing on the typical operating ranges of submersible pumps in discharge tube. The pump's self-centring, non-positive seating in the discharge tube, sealed by an O-ring, makes it easy to install and remove. No anchoring or anti-rotation elements are needed. Integrated, intelligent sensor monitoring detects any vibrations or leakages and measures the temperature of bearings and motor. It provides continuous supervision of operation and early detection of malfunctions as well as the option of predictive maintenance. All electric motors of these pump series are of an efficiency corresponding to class IE3 for standardised motors to IEC 60034-30. Two bi-directional mechanical seals prevent water ingress into the motor space. A chamber filled with environmentally friendly oil ensures cooling and lubrication of the mechanical seals even when gas-laden fluids have to be pumped. Generously dimensioned ball bearings sealed for life support the stainless steel shaft. Special focus was further placed on the design of the cable gland. Individual conductors stripped, tinned and sealed in resin ensure that the cable gland is absolutely watertight. Even in the event of damage to the cable sheath or the insulation, thanks to this design the pump is protected against short circuits. To ensure that the pumps can be easily dismantled even after years of operation under tough conditions, all wetted screwed connections are made of high-grade stainless steel. www.ksb.com Read the full article

Producing since 2014, Anglo Americanās Minas-Rio is a fully integrated iron ore export operation in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Ore from the mine is processed on site and transported via a 529 km pipeline ā the longest in the world ā to an export terminal at the port of AƧu in the state of Rio de Janeiro. At full capacity, Minas-Rio is expected to produce 26.5 million tons of ore per annum. Estimated reserves at the site are 1.45 billion tons and the mine has a planned working life of 45 years.Searching for improved performanceLike most open cast mines, rain and groundwater can accumulate in depressions across the site. Operators use submersible dewatering pumps to remove this water, keeping working areas clear. When the mine first opened, however, the abrasive nature of the water, which contains high levels of debris, resulted in rapid wear and frequent pump failures. Repairs were expensive and time-consuming to complete. Amanda Coelho from Sulzer and Cesar Carraro from Anglo American at Minas-RioSix years ago, the mineās operators made the decision to seek an alternative pump supplier. After a comprehensive survey of the market, the operator selected Sulzer as its preferred supplier of dewatering pumps for the site. The companyās range of dewatering pump uses a modern design, tailored specifically for the challenges of mining operations. The pumps use wear-resistant components and have a modular design that makes the replacement of damaged components quick and simple. For Anglo American, the Sulzer proposition offered additional benefits too. Sulzerās main service center is only 100 km from the site, simplifying service and support logistics. In addition, under the terms of a long-term service agreement, Sulzer maintains an agreed stock of spare pumps and service parts, reducing operating expenditure for Anglo American. Today, more than 80 Sulzer dewatering pumps are in operation across the mine.Superior flexibility XJ 900 high-capacity dewatering pumpThe Sulzer pumps are also equipped with premium efficiency IE3 motors. While not a requirement for submersible pumps, these motors consume less energy than lower-spec alternatives and their cooler running helps to prolong the life of critical pump components.Mine dewatering operations require highly durable pumps, but they demand maximum flexibility too. Pumps are relocated repeatedly during their working life, and they need to work efficiently at a wide range of different heads and flow rates. Those requirements also evolve during the lifetime of the mine: as work gets deeper, pumps need to generate higher heads. With these changing long-term needs in mind, Anglo American has recently invested in two of Sulzerās award-winning XJ 900 high-capacity dewatering pumps. This innovative design features twin impellers that can be configured to operate in parallel to produce maximum flow, or in series for high-head applications. Switching between the two configurations can be achieved quickly and easily by flipping two internal components.Long-term reliabilityAt Minas Rio the XJ 900s will initially be operated in their high-flow configuration, then switch to high-head operation as the mine gets deeper. The pumps can deliver a maximum flow rate of 120 l/s in high-flow configuration, and a maximum head of 230 meters with the impellers running in series. Long-term protection of the pump is ensured by an advanced control system that can continually monitor the temperature of the motors and bearings, and by leakage detectors that can sense the presence of water in the motor chamber, junction box or oil chamber.āWe know that the abrasive conditions at our site are tough on pumps. Sulzerās dewatering pumps have, however, been running nonstop at two rain stations, without any maintenance since they were installed four years agoā says Cesar Carraro, Section Manager at Anglo American. āSulzer has been able to meet our reliability expectations, and they have become a valuable partner in the project, with a strong commitment to service, support and innovation.āwww.sulzer.com
This illustration experimentĀ āpeople doing thingsā is actually the one that has taken me the longest, despite looking like it only took 5 minutes.
I immediately had the idea of drawing people doing things in a continuous line style of illustration. I started by brainstorming anything I could think of that people do that could be drawn. I narrowed it down to a few activities I personally enjoy, and started sketching those. In the end I drew silhouette type images based on stock photos, so I had some sort of shadow toĀ ātraceā for the lineart.
Initially I thought it would be fairly easy to get the results I wanted, but this exercise is a lot harder than I remember it being. Several pieces of paper and a couple hours later I decided to try and trace my favourite composition digitally.
I definitely think it looks like more of a concept than a finished illustration, but after so much time I think itās time to call it a week.Ā
Looking back at the original line drawings Iād done Iāve simplified the shapes a lot, but not nearly enough.Ā
As frustrating as it was I think this style is a really good way to shake up your normal drawing routine. Youāve got to break down your reference images to the simplest but still recognizable shapes and lines, and try to include as little detail as possible while conveying your message.
