Just have this idea of Jake being an asshole, secretly with Bradley, and Bradley has gone back to college/University to get his Masters for something, and Jake is wearing Bradley's college t-shirts (it's something Bradley finds unfairly hot and Jake knows it).
Except Jake is in his mid-30s now, and he's bragging about his boyfriend starting college and everyone is just side-eyeing him like... DUDE. Jail bait much? Except Jake is thinking HE is the jail bait, so he doesn't connect the dots... But there are some AWKWARD conversations about 'how it used to be illegal' (aka homosexuality, DADT etc) but there is just SO MUCH miscommunication/misunderstanding.
Meanwhile Bradley is at college and getting mistaken for a lecturer/professor and getting hit on left-right and centre, so he's talking up his gorgeous pilot boyfriend, but people are like 'sure buddy, you're just making him up' and Bradley is very much whining to Jake on the phone about how no-one believes him. Jake is getting a little annoyed that Bradley is getting hit on and he's not there to lay claim because he's a possessive bastard.
I've definitely read something like this somewhere... or I'm mixing multiple fics and making it Hangster in my head as you do...
