Am I the only one who thinks this?

                “I want to fly.”                 Carole’s stomach drops, skin suddenly cold. Some days she curses Maverick and the stories he tells. She can tell both Levi and Bradley both have a little case of hero worship.                 No.                 No no no.                 The idea of being given another folded flag. She can’t have that. She needs to stop that from happening any way she can. Has to protect them. First, she needs to know what to protect them against.                 “What about you honey?” Carole asks, turning her attention to Levi and hoping her tears don’t actually spill over, breath coming a little fast in her increasing fear and panic.                 “I don’t know. Was maybe thinking of becoming a chef. Don’t think writing would make me enough money, but being a chef would mean a skill I could travel with right? I want to see the world… I mean, I’d love to write but Mrs Jensen says I won’t make very much money from writing. So she suggested I have a career or job that pays the bills and then make writing my hobby…”                 “If you want to be a writer baby you can. You can be anything you want.”                 “Maybe a travel writer,” Bradley suggests with a surprising amount of tact, because usually by now he’d be riling Levi up, trying to pick at his insecurities. She must look as bad as she feels if they’re trying to act nicely with one another. She’s been feeling more tired than usual, her doctor telling her it’s simply being a parent making her tired but she feels distinctly off.                 “That’s a lovely idea. Where would you go?”                 “I don’t know, where can I take you mom?” Levi asks, and she hides her smile at that, because she loves how sweet Levi is. Bradley is still a little less smiley, more serious and harder to make smile. It makes them all the more sweet when they do come out, but Levi is her smiley boy.                 “Oh, I’ve always wanted to go to Europe.”                 “I’ll fly you there,” Bradley offers, and she forces herself to smile, tries to imagine Bradley flying a commercial plane. That is something she’d be okay with, no more hazardous than everyday life.

                Jake feels good. Better than good. He still doesn’t remember exactly what happened last night, but he’s not arguing with the end result. However, he definitely needs to bring Javy up to speed on his change in circumstances. He knocks on Javy’s door and keeps going until he hears an exasperated yell of: I’m coming, for fuck’s sake Jake! a few seconds before the door opens.                 “Good morning!”                 “Ugh. You’re in a good mood…”                 “Yep,” Jake grins, pushing past him and throwing himself onto the sofa, tucking his hands behind his head as he lays there and looks at his best friend.                 “Figured you’d have a hangover, but of course you just slept it off. Fucker.”                 “Oh, I woke up and I was definitely hungover, I just took some painkillers, drank a tall glass of water and then joined Rooster back in bed.”                 He grins at the ceiling and waits with bated breath for Javy to process what he just said.                 “You… what the fuck? You slept with Rooster?”                 “Yep,” he pops the p with relish, delighted.                 “Wha – How?”                 “Not only did I wake up in his bed, but I just dropped him off to have lunch with Phoenix and I drove his shitty Honda Civic here… I’m seeing him again later.”

                Jake stares at the words in the mirror, trying to read them back-to-front.                 It’s okay, come on, hold my hand.                 He groans. Fucking soul words. Right across his heart, too, where he can’t hide them easily. Fuck. He wishes he had maybe gotten them somewhere like the inside of his bicep like Javy's tiny spikey you're in my seat.                 The text is blocky and red, edged in dark gold. He snaps a quick picture and sends it to Javy, not surprised when his phone immediately starts ringing.                 “I’m down the row. Why are you calling?” he asks with a tired sigh.                 “Your soul words appeared? I mean, I’m assuming they’re soul words and not some new ink you didn’t think to tell me about.”                 “Yeah. Just… looked in the mirror and they were there.”                 “And you have no idea who it could be,” Javy surmises unhelpfully and Jake makes a grunt of agreement. “Fuck man…”                 “Yeah well, I’m kind of in love with Bradshaw so…”                 “Oh, are we talking about that now?”                 “Better him than my unknown person that I have no idea about…”
