There is Iceman's property, and then there's communal property. Maverick notices it unintentionally, he's trying to get a feel for the men when he starts to pick up on the behaviour.

Iceman has his cigarettes, Slider has his cigarettes that he smokes rarely and often ends up handing over to Iceman.

Iceman has his gum that he refuses to share no matter how much Wolfman begs him for it, Slider has weird cinnamon gum that he tosses to Iceman at least once a day.

Maverick watches once, as Slider snacks on a cereal bar and Iceman takes it out of his hand, bites off half, and then hands it back. Not a word is exchanged.

Of course, as a man who is as nosey as Goose is tall, Maverick has to ask his RIO, "What's their deal?"

Nick sighs, the sigh of a man who has been putting up with Pete's bullshit for a very long time and only gets repaid with babysitting.

"It's a trust thing, they've been like that for years. What's it matter to you?"

Pete ignores his hypocrisy and takes a handful of the chips Nick is eating, barbecue flavoured, not his favourite but still a worthy snack.

"Doesn't seem very mutual is all, Slider's the only one giving out anything. Iceman just seems to take."

Pete recognises the look on Nick's face, it's his 'not my place to tell but I'll tell regardless because privacy is non existent' look. Pete likes to think of it as the Mav Special.

"Ice helped pay for Slider's car when he first got it. He drove for two days to get to Sli when his dad died and he didn't know who else to call. He's not much of a sharer but he cares, he just shows it differently."

It's surprising, the frigid Iceman is capable of such things but despite the reputation, he's as much a man as any. It warms him up to the other pilot, and with great reluctance, to Slider.

"Good job out there today," Ice said. That had become his routine expression, and he'd run his fingers over the birthmark on his chin as he said it.

But Maverick sensed a hint of sarcasm, and it bothered him a bit more than he'd liked.

"Is that your way of making fun of me, Kazansky?" Pete whipped his entire body in a 180, dropping his bag on the bench in front of him.

Ice gaped at him for a second, looking back from grooming his hair.

"No, it was good," Ice began. "Would've been better if you knew how to follow instructions," he sneered.

Maverick felt himself boiling. He didn't know if it was the water trickling down Ice's neck or the bastard's inability to keep his mouth shut. Either way, the colors in his mind were blending together in a furious red.

"Oh yeah, Kazansky? You think this is funny?"

Ice walked a little closer, and Maverick shut his locker.

"You know what I think's funny, Maverick?" He let the words really linger.

Maverick was fuming now. His stomach was an odd mix of shambles.

"I think it's *real* funny that you don't know how to follow goddamn instructions," Ice spat.

"That's fucking right I don't," Maverick snapped immediately. He pointed a finger at Ice, "I don't fucking listen. Not to you, not to Viper, or any of these other shitheads here."

Ice looked satisfied with himself, like he knew he was going to get an answer like that. But Maverick could see a flicker of frustration in his face as well.

"What? You got something to say, Kazansky? Spit it out, won't you?" Maverick said as he harshly shoved his finger into Kazansky's chest, not taking his eyes off of him.

"Maverick, you are out of control."

"Out of control?—"

"Shut up," Ice said as he grabbed Maverick's hand and shoved it away from himself.

"—It's like you're on a mission to get all of us killed."

Maverick was quiet.

"And worse, I don't even know whose side you're on. You keep going out on a reckless limb for some stupid thrill," Ice lectured.

"Lay off, Kazansky. You don't get to lecture me," Maverick huffed and turned back around to his locker, but Ice grabbed his shoulder, and Maverick's heart jumped.

"You don't get it, do you?" Ice said as he backed Maverick into the locker, the lock hitting Maverick in his lower back.

Maverick didn't know what to say. Nervousness and fury consumed him.

What could you possibly want from me, Iceman?

"You."

"What?" Maverick asked.

"You could've died," Ice scolded, his face growing a little red from how stuffy the room was. Maverick could see him up close now; he could see the mole on his chin, the bead of water running down his forehead. "do you ever consider that possibility, genius?"

"This doesn't concern you," Maverick said, his voice having the slightest quiver, but he held his confidence. He felt Ice loom over him.

"Like hell it does. You just want me to sit here and watch you absolutely fuck up the trajectory of everybody's lives?" Ice scoffed, his eyes laying strict on Maverick; he was getting frustrated too. It was in his eyes; Maverick could sense it.

"—Because I'm not going to let you."

"Drop it, Kazansky, let me go." Maverick struggled a little as Kazansky gently pinned his hand to the locker.

"Fuck, Pete, you still don't get it, do you?" Ice spat.

Pete?

"What?" Maverick said, his face flushing pink.

"I care about you," Ice frowned.

"You don't know what you're talking about. Let go," Pete had said, but he felt himself leaning into Ice's presence.

Ice was still pinning him back; Maverick could smell the shampoo, and he could feel the heat of his body.

Maverick's breaths were sputtering everywhere. His confidence was slowly faltering. His rage was turning into something he couldn't describe.

"You're going to get yourself killed. And I can't sit and watch," Ice continued. "So *please*, for once in your goddamn life you better listen."

But Pete wasn't listening; his eyes flickered down to Ice's lips. This is a stupid idea. Mitchell, don't do it. Please don't.

He knew what he really wanted now, and he didn't like that. *No. Pete fucking Mitchell, please do not kiss Tom Kazansky. Your career is already in shambles, why do you make everything so hard for yourself?*

It was serendipitous that Ice was so close to him right now, rambling about his safety.

"You have no fucking idea how dangerous you're being, Mitchell, what were you thinking?"

I care about you. I care about. I care. I.

"And you kno—"

Pete leaned in, grabbed Ice by the face, and kissed him. It felt good on his lips; he could taste the mint. Ice struggled, and then Pete could feel Ice leaning in, enveloping both their tongues...but then he stopped. And Ice stumbled backwards. And it crashed all at once.

"What the hell, Maverick?" Ice said, wiping his mouth.

Mission failure.

Fuck. Maverick, you know you shouldn't have done that.

Pete's face flushed red.

"Fuck, I'm sorry—" but then Ice's lips crashed back into his, and Maverick leaned in. He grabbed Ice's hair, and now they were so close, chest to chest, and their legs were almost intertwined.

There is no greater authority in their relationship, it's sniping at each other for fun and becoming avoidant when there's a genuine source of conflict.

Maverick does have a cheat sheet.

If Tom goes to bed angry with him, waking up a little earlier and making bacon in the morning can calm the Iceman's ire.

Waiting to react to something instead of losing his head becomes a practised habit. If Tom's hand is still flexing by his side and the blonde won't meet his eyes, he's trying to articulate a thought further and it saves them from arguing if Pete misunderstands him.

Accusing Tom of being a heartless prick while drunk will always haunt him, not for the honesty behind his words in the moment but for the horrible silence that followed in which Tom made no move to deny it. He'll never voice it, not Ice, but Pete knows he internalised the belief and it took a lot of work to convince him that he's a man capable and worthy of love.

If Tom is neglecting his health for the sake of the job, Pete says nothing. Instead, he calls in the big guns and watches Ron Kerner tear Ice a fucking new one. They'll argue until they're blue in the face, Tom will glare at him like he wants both Mav and Slider to drop dead at his feet. Yet, he always falters against Ron because Ron's leading argument is, "I love you, and you're being a stubborn prick about this." Never but, it's always I love you, and.

Arguing about their taste in pets will never get them anywhere, every time it ends with Ice calling him a mutt and Mav retaliating with calling him a pussy.

If Ice is in a Hell of a mood around lunch time, throw snacks and water at him like you would with a toddler. He's downright nasty when his blood sugar is low.

Iceman has his own cheat sheet.

Wear those old grey sweats that hang low on his hips and don't tame his bed head if Pete wakes up angry about something awaiting him later in the day. The man will stop every time to catch a look at him looking vulnerable, as he likes to call it and it calms his temper just a little. Don't kick him when he makes a comment about melting the Iceman either, even if it's infuriatingly unfunny.

It Mav is hung up about his place in the navy, fall back on calling him Mitchell. The reminder of his namesake is sometimes just enough to kick his ass back in gear, and remind him who he's flying for.

Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is susceptible to bribery via cinnamon roll. Use sparingly to divert suspicion about the sudden acts of kindness, and that is coincides with his smoking habit picking up again.

Don't expect any leftovers to survive Pete when he's has a few drinks, there is no stopping him. No matter how many times Tom tells him to leave his leftover chow mein alone, sober Pete always promises not to touch it and drunk Pete always ends up sitting on their kitchen floor eating it.

Ignore any attempt to bait him into an argument in the week approaching the anniversary of Nick's death. Pete wants the fight because it'll prove that every negative thought he's ever had about himself is true. Have a drink in honour of Mother Goose alone in the week after the anniversary, he can help carry Pete's grief but his own will stay with him.
