—————————————————————————
two weeks, 336 hours and 20,160 minutes— that’s how long you’ve been captured in mars in the hands of ma’alefa’ak and his henchmen, or henchmartians. your ring was stripped away from you and you were chained up in a unknown place in mars, hair messed up and the signs of their torture on your face, arms and legs. and that was just the physical torment, the mental version hurt even worse the entire thing was a blur to you. all you remember was that you were representing the green lantern corps in the mars peace summit with queen j’arlia j’axx and her son, prince j’emm j’axx. both you and the royals agreed that the racism regarding the a’ashenn and the g’arrunn should stop and that both the green lantern corps and the royal guards will work together to oversee this personally.
and here you were— arms chained up on the wall, knees on the floor and head low. the mind touch of both ma’alefa’ak and the other martians tried to break through your mind in order to gain information on the green lantern corps, young justice and the justice league. but thanks to m’gann and j’ohn’s mental training, they were able to get nothing from you— which resulted in them getting physical with you, trying everything they can to get info out of you
however, m’gann and j’ohn’s training only protected critical and valuable information of the league, young justice and the corps and not your mind fully— cue in the mental attacks they have tormented you with for hours and almost days that left you both physically and mentally tired
judging from where you were, the environment surrounding the area where you were trapped was safe for you-- considering that the mars biosphere wasn’t really that safe for humans and that you always relied on your ring to regulate oxygen and body temperatures. you tried linking your mind with m’gann and j’ohn, but you knew you were too far from them to get a connection god, how could you be this careless? you’ve faced enemies far worser than ma’alefa’ak and yet your guard was down and you still got captured. hal was so going to lecture you on keeping your guard up like you were a teenager all over again, newly taken under his wing
your pants were quiet yet heavy, slowly lifting up your head with little strength you had as you looked up at the door of your cage and noticing two white a’ashenns guarding your door. and when an escape plan popped in your head not for more than a second, it was soon replaced with cries of agony as you screamed from the pain, trying to escape from the chains and failing as a result the guards turned their heads behind them, red eyes on you. “just because we can’t access information does not mean we can’t listen on what you think, green lantern” one of them thought in your head. “but don’t fear, your time is almost up” the other added over your screams of pain and once they stopped, your limited movements in the chains stopped and a groan choked out from your dry throat before they walked away in silence, probably thinking to each other as you watched them walk away under the slight strands of your hair that was over your face, panting and catching your breath. this was how you were going to die— chained up in a planet besides earth after being tortured both mentally and physically in a foreign, possibly unknown area in mars.
you knew that everyone was probably trying to find you— the corps travelling in every inch of the universe and young justice immediately forming plans and missions to search for you. and even though you were certain that they would find you thanks to your willpower, you didn’t know if you would be found dead or alive
the moment you saw your memories flash in your head, you knew you were watching your life fade before your eyes. the first few memories was your time in the corps— hal taking you in as his protege from earth and training you to now being known across the universe as one of few green lanterns whose willpower is respected, feared and envied, you and kyle drawing a neon green mustache on guy’s face while he was sleeping with hal trying so hard to hold his laugh as he was recording everything, sparring sessions with john with kilowog and hal in the corner making a bet on who would win, flying across the universe with simon and jessica and catching up with each other
the corps was and always will be your first family. no matter where you go, a part of your heart will be in oa after that came the memories of the time where hal introduced you to young justice, the JL’s covert ops. and ever since joining, they’ve been the family from earth that you thought you never needed— kaldur welcoming you in like you always belonged in, wally sizing you up the moment you were brought in as a new member and wanting to race with you with that lopside grin of his, m’gann immediately forming a trio with her, you and artemis— who was weary of you at first and slowly warmed up to you as time passed by— and having girls night out every single night with zatanna and rocket, conner who tried to stay nonchalent around you yet always found himself only talking to you about things that always made him silently overthink— whether it be about his feelings for m’gann or about his identity as a half kryptonian and half human.
the other part of your heart would reside in earth with young justice, with the team that you grew up to love and cherish and the last memories appeared with only memories of one person— dick grayson. the man that made you change your perspective on love ever since you met him. he was your first serious relationship and the same ex that you still had feelings for, pretty pathetic to still be crushing over your ex. but he was different, dick grayson was different. you remembered how quickly he was to greet you and introduce himself when you joined the team, how you were the first person in the team that knew his identity besides wally, and how he saw you for who you really were, not just as hal jordan’s prodigy or the corps’ rising star the late night stakeouts that always dissolved into whispered jokes was one of your favorite parts of the night as you’d feel his shoulder brushing yours like it was accidental when it never really was. and even though you were very close with the rest of the YJ members, it was dick who always knew you more than you knew yourself. he learned the rhythm of your breathing and could tell when you were spiraling just by the way your green constructs flickered. he would always tease you for overthinking everything and calling you “bright mind, brighter will.” but it would never top the quiet moments after missions where both his mask and bravado would come off— when it would just be dick grayson, the boy who suffered so much yet never failed to shine so hard. and those moments would only be reserved to you
you could never forget the first time you kissed dick— on a rooftop with rain pouring over your heads as the familiar sense of adrenaline was still buzzing in your veins. the city lights of gotham looked like stars below you and it felt like a scene pulled straight from a show. he tasted like copper and laughter, a taste you never knew you could get addicted to. and loving him felt like learning a new gravity, how it was easy to fall yet impossible to pull away and of course, you remembered the fights too. it wasn’t the loud ones that scared you, but rather the quiet distance that creap in to both you and dick as responsibilities piled higher, galaxies apart, and missions classified even from each other. you remembered choosing the corps over and over again and dick remembered choosing bludhaven over and over—all for one similar reason: saving the world felt easier than admitting you or him were afraid of wanting something that could be taken from either one of you and because of that reason, you never asked him to choose between his city and you, and he never asked you to choose between the corps and him. yet that was the same reason why both of you almost reluctantly ended it off, which made your missions together in young justice feel so awkward that you started to take more intergalactic missions from the corps to avoid being in that position.
but even after all that, your feelings for dick grayson never changed and vice versa— unbeknownst to each other. and the last part of your heart— the core— would always belong to dick grayson, always your breaths started to slow down and get heavier as you felt both your eyes and your body slowly weight down. your energy started to slip out of your body as you gritted your teeth. no, this wasn’t how you were going to die— not like this, not here and not now. and your willpower was going to make sure that you didn’t but your body betrayed you as one last memory flash in your head, almost like a farewell— you and dick on his couch in each other’s arms, laughing and looking at each other with so much love it was almost sick. there was a reason why this was your last memory., it was one of the few moments where you can lower your guard down and not worry about the corps. and it was always dick grayson that made you feel this way— that made you feel safe and loved
your vision started to blur and everything was muffled, eyes slowly dropping as your body slowly preapared itself to hang dead on the chains, not hearing the chaos that was outside your jail cell. the cell started to open and you tried to pick your head up to look undefiant, to show that you weren’t on the verge of death and that ma’alefa’ak’s torture wasn’t doing a number on you when in reality, it was and you felt your life slipping out.
but through your blurry vision and muffled hearing you saw black and blue and heard a muffled cry of your name, making a weak smile form on your lips in response and a wash of relief hitting your body so fast that you finally allowed yourself to collapse with the chains on the wall holding you by your arms as the only support to your exhausted body the chains that hounded your arms were now broken as your body dropped in strong, familiar arms. “over here! i got her!” dick exclaimed to m’gann and conner from afar before turning to face you, his breath hitched and lips slightly parted in shock. your face looked tired with slight blood stains around it as your arms and legs were bruised, cut and even bloodied “i got you, gorgeous” his whisper of your pet name he used to use left his lips with ease like it always belonged there. “stay with me now” dick patted your cheek but when you didn’t respond or even open your eyes, he gritted his teeth and immediately checked your pulse on your neck— there, but faint and slowing down m’gann and conner ran towards dick and m’gann’s hands shot up to her mouth in shock to muffle her gasp, eyes widened as her hands started to tremble. conner’s eyes flickered with surprise, lips parted from the sight as shock entered his body. “her hearbeat…” he murmured, still processing. “its there but weak, faint.” “we.. we need to get her back into the bioship now” m’gann inhaled and tried to compose her voice, though the shake in her words were obvious to catch. dick’s grip on you tightened as silent anger was raidiating from him he carefully lifted you higher against his chest, one arm supporting your back whle the other cradled your legs as if you were fragile— like you could shatter if he moved too fast. “conner, lead the way. m’gann, i need you in your head— gently” his voice was sharped with fear he didn’t bother hiding
conner didn’t need to be told twice as he nodded once, jaw set and eyes burning as he turned towards the corridor. the alarms blared as shouts from the martions were echoing from a distance before getting abruptly cut off. m’gann hovered close, her eyes glowing red “she’s still here” the martian said quickly, relief and panic in her voice. “exhausted— but here. she’s fighting and doesn’t want to let go.” dick swallowed hard. “yeah” he whispered, more to himself than anyone else. “that sounds like her” “you got the ring?” conner exclaimed about your power ring before m’gann nodded. “right here—but she can’t use it if her mind is damaged” she pointed out. once they were now outside, the bioship came into view with the hatch already opening. dick moved faster than he ever had, praying to anyone or anything above to save you so he could see you again, not after finally getting you back. once inside, the hatch closed behiind them as conner took you from dick’s arms and laid you gently on one of the medical tables, his hands far more careful than his strength suggested. m’gann was already rerouting systems, her mind moving faster than the ship “she’s in shock” m’gann said from the pilot’s seat. “severe dehydration, internal bruising, energy depletation—“ her voice cracked despite herself before levitating your ring and slipping it back into your finger. “her ring’s barely responding” and she was right, the ring was flickering repeatedly as a response to your current state. the three of them didn’t know much about a green lantern ring, but they all knew that it was bad if the ring kept flickering. normally, it would take 26 days to travel from earth to mars but you didn’t have that much time. hal’s face appeared on the holographic screen of the bioship. “green lantern, this is miss martian. we found her but—“ m’gann’s eyes trailed to you before looking back at hal and deeply inhaling to get it together. “we need to get her back to earth. now. and we need your help” hal’s eyes widened before he clenched his jaw. he already lost so much people, he couldn’t bear to lose you too, not when you were like a daughter to him and immediately started searching the universe for you when he found out about your disappearence. “on it, send me the coordinates right now” hal left no room for any arguments before ending the call, not like there would be any
and in less than three minutes, hal flew in space besides the bioship, green aura radiating around him like usual. he looked through the bioship’s viewport and when he saw the sight of you— unconscious, bloodied, bruised and still, possibly too still— something in his chest fractured. the universe blurred for half a second, not from speed but from the sheet force of emotions he shoved down hal didn’t hesitate— he forced himself to breathe as his ring flared brighter and started to scan you from where he hovered besides the ship. the data of your vitals hit harder than any enemy could: vitals unstable, pulse faint, life signs fluctuating when hal appeared on the external comm, dick looked up instantly with both hope and fear on his face. “hal” dick spoke, his voice tight. “she’s-“ “i know, i see her” hal cut in, already moving. “i’ve got her” he raised his fist and from his ring, emerald light came out as his ring synced with the bioship’s systems with the glow now wrapped around the ship in a protective sheath, thicker and brighter than usual. “i’m taking point” hal spoke firmly. “ill pull us into slipspace so this gonna be rough” “she can’t handle rough” m’gann quickly advised him, hands hovering over the controls. “her ring’s barely keeping her stabili-” “then i won’t let it be” hal’s jaw tightened before closing his eyes and taking a deep inhale. and immediately, he pushed— really pushed space was now bent and stars stretched into endless green lines as hal’s construct tore a path through the void, reality floding under the weight of his will. the speed of the bioship mulitiplied violently as the ring ignored every safety protocol it had while being lurched foward and surged
both dick and conner stumbled as he gripped on the headseat of a chair to steady himself while dick catched himself on the edge of the table before looking down at you “hey” he whispered, desperation almost cracking through his voice. “dont you dare let go now” his voice was trembling just enough to betray himself. “not after putting us through hell trying to find you, not after—“ dick stopped himself, his breath hitching. “not when im right here” the minutes felt like hours as the glow around the bioship burned brighter, draining the energy from hal’s ring faster than ever. but he couldn’t care less about that right now. sweat formed at his temples and his teeth was clenched as he forced more of his will into the construct
“almost there” hal gritted. “hang on, kid— just hang on”
and soon, earth came into view far too quickly like a sight for sore eyes. so did the watchtower, floating in space like it always did immediately, hal used his protocol code and opened the hatch of the watchtower and quickly brought both himself and the bioship inside. he guided the bioship inside one last time before easing it down onto the landing platform far harder than he wouldn’ve like, but gentle didn’t matter. time did the construct dissolved the moment the bioship settled and alarms were heard through the hangar. medics and leaguers rushed foward from the emergency protocol as the hatch for the bioship opened “move- now!” hal barked, already stepping aside as medical teams swarmed in, transferring you onto a stretcher. your body barely reacted to the movement as your head lollied slightly, your ring flickering again but more weaker than before “heart rate’s dropping” “oxygen levels unstable” even as the medics called out your vitals, dick refused to let you go. he was by your side the entire time as they quickly rushed you through the watchtower. and once inside the medbay, the doors hissed shut from behind and machines were now hooked onto you, green and blue holograms now popping up “nightwing, we need you to give us space to operate” one of the lead medics spoke as he quickly put on gloves. dick was about to refuse and say that he was going to be by your side no matter what, but a hand went on his shoulder— belonging to m’gann as she just simply nodded dick clenched his jaw as he looked at m’gann, the medics and now you. and the sight of you made his eyes softened more before his hand reluctantly let go as m’gann led him outside, the doors hissing open and soon hissing shut when they left
the minutes turned to hours and the hours turned into days. time lost all meaning in the watchtower. every so often, the doors would hiss open and medics would step out, murmuring updates in low voices: stable, but critical. no change. still unconscious on the third day, the doctors came and said that your vitals were finally stable but still unconscious. those words finally eased up the team that were waiting outside your door, especially dick. the medics gave them the ok to visit you as they finally saw you for the first time in days. you laid on the bed, bandaged and bruised with machines hooked and softly beeping around you as your chest now rose in slow, even breaths. your ring on your finger glowed faintly as steady as a heartbeat.
kaldur would just stand in silence more than once though the thoughts in his head would be the opposite, artemis would sit besides your bedside and murmur words to herself as if she was talking to you before quietly sobbing and would mention how she already lost wally and she didn’t want to lose you too. m’gann and conner would come together and everytime m’gann felt how damaged your mind was, she would cover her mouth and cry on conner’s shoulder, thinking that it was her fault that her brother could do something so atrocious like this while conner would stare at your resting form, jaw clenched with narrowed eyes and fists resting on his side your fellow lanterns would come visit you as well. tears fell from kyle’s eyes the moment he saw you unconscious and jessica’s mouth dropped with shock all over her face. john and simon said nothing, yet their clenched fists spoke more while guy’s head was down, staring at the floor with shoulders hunched and quieter than anyone had ever seen him. hal stood near the foot of the bed, hands clenched into fists at his sides. for the first time since they brought you back, he looked tired. the usual easy confidence was gone and was replaced with something raw and painfully human. the sight of you bandaged up made him swallow hard and would murmur on how you were always too stubborn to quit and how he probably taught you that. and even though he always had to leave for missions, hal always made sure to come back to check on you— his protege, the same green lantern that he’s taken under his wing longer than his mentees, the same green lantern whom he viewed as his own daughter but out of everyone that would leave after visiting you and come back a few days later, dick never left your room. he was still in his suit, mask discarded long ago and boots still on as his blue eyes that were bright now looked hollow. he slept short and restless— if you can even call that sleep-- sitting on the chair that was besides your bedside. zatanna brought coffee that dick never touched and raquel would bring some food in a bag that dick wouldn’t even open.
and after five days, your eyes slowly fluttered open with a small groan leaving your lips as your vision slowly cleared up and was met by the ceiling of the medbay. dick heard your groan and slowly woke up from the noise in the chair, expecting it to be a nurse. but when he saw your tired eyes open, all signs of dick being previously asleep faded as he immediately reached out for your hand. “hey— hey, how are you feeling?” god, he was so happy to see your eyes again, the same ones he can stare for endlessly you blinked slowly. “is...” your words trailed off from your dry throat. “is this heaven?”
dick’s eyes burned as he laughed softly, tears threatening to leave his eyes. “first time i heard someone call the watchtower heaven” and this made a weak chuckle leave your lips before it turned into a cough. dick snapped out of it and immediately brought a water bottle, opening it before handing it to you. “here, drink slowly” you drank the entire bottle as you placed the now empty bottle down with a sigh. then, it processed you— mars, ma’alefa’ak, dick “how long have i been out?” “five days” “holy shit” you blinked in realization before widening your eyes. “and ma’alefa’ak? did you capture him? what about the summit? is the peace deal still on? and i-“ “hey—hey, easy now” dick reassured you gently before putting a hand over yours and his touch sent a jolt to your body and your breath hitched. you haven’t felt his warmth like this ever since you two broke up. “no, ma’ale’fa’ak is still out there but he’s now wanted by both the mars royal guard and the green lantern corps all over the universe, yes, hal and john are taking care of the summit and from what i heard, the peace deal is still on” he informed you that let out a sigh of relief come out from you, shoulders now visibly relaxed. once there was nothing but the faint beeps of the monitors filling in the silence, your eyes trailed to dick’s attire and how he probably hasn’t left your room for days. “you didn’t have to stay, you know…” you murmured, eyes now down onto the sight of his hand on top of yours. dick’s jaw tightened slightly but his eyes softened, warm and unwavering as he looked back at you. “yeah, i did” he responded simply. “i wasn’t going anywhere, not when you were lying like this, not when you… scared me half to death.” a small, tired smile. “bright mind, brighter will” you shrugged, making both you and dick laugh as he nodded before sharply inhaling to hold back the tears. “bright mind, brighter will…” he he murmured to himself as a reminiscence on how much both of you went through, both in the team and in your relationship
you tried to sit up slightly but the sharp ache in your side made you wince. dick noticed immediately and stood up and placed his hands on your shoulders, gently laying you back on the bed. “easy” he whispered and your body gave in on both his touch and voice. “take it slow, you don’t have to do anything but rest right now. im right here”
you let out a shaky breath and briefly closing your eyes for a second. “why?” barely a whisper that left your lips. “why stay with your ex for five days?” dick was quiet for a long time, his thumb brushing once over the back of your hand in a slow and grounding action before he finally spoke. “because i love you” he confessed, voice so soft that it seemed like the truth might shatter the room if he said it any louder. and your breath was caught from his words. his eyes didn’t waver nor dodge yours, even when his voice dipped a little rougher. “and i dont know how to stop, i dont think i ever did” you swallowed, heart pounding so fast you were almost shocked that the heart monitor was beeping like crazy. “dick-“ “hey” he cut in gently, leaning so close that his forehead was nearly touching yours. “im not asking for anything. im not trying to fix the past or drag you into something you’re not ready for” his grip tightened just a bit. “i stayed because when i thought i was about to lose you...“ his voice trailed off, as if the idea of losing you was the one thing he wont comprehend. but instead, dick’s jaw flexes and his breath now shaky. “cities, missions, the corps, bludhaven— none of it meant a damn thing if you weren’t here to argue with me about it later” a beat. “you scared me” he admitted quietly. “and i stayed because i couldn’t live with myself if you woke up alone or worse.. didn’t wake up at all.” his thumb brushed your knuckles again but more softer this time. “so yeah. five days— and i’d do it again without thinking”
and for the first time since you opened your eyes, the weight in your chest eased— because no matter how complicated things were, no matter how difficult navigating through the past may be, one thing was clear: he never stopped choosing you “can we—“ you stopped yourself, processing your words in your head. you know what they all say, ‘dont get back with your ex’—but when your ex was dick grayson, the ex you were still hopelessly in love with before and after your relationship, it was hard not too. “can we try again?”
your words made dick freeze. not in fear but with hope, the same hope that he gave to citizens yet never had for himself. his breath was hitched, eyes searching yours as if he was afraid you’d take those words back. “are you serious?” he asked softly— not in disbelief, but as if the question or topic itself deserved to be handled with care and when you slowly nodded in confirmation, dick let out a shaky laugh that almost sounded as close to a sob. you could see his shoulders sagged, as if all the tension he’d been carrying around you now finally breaking he pressed his forehead against yours. “yeah—“ he whispered. “yeah, we can try again” his hand tightened around yours with certainty. “but this time… we do it differently” he said. “no running when it gets hard, no pretending we’re fine when we’re galaxies apart— we talk, we choose each other. even when its terrifying” you just quietly nodded again but with tears threatening to slip out from your eyes and he took his hand off yours to place on your cheek, thumb gently brushing the tears that now failed to stay in your eyes. the gesture was familiar and gentle, a gesture you missed so much. “i don’t need perfect, i just need you” dick whispered. “bright mind, brighter will.” your warmth on his hands felt so good it was almost a sin for him to be apart from you for this long your other hand that was under your blanket started to glow brighter thanks to your ring, as if your willpower just multiplied. because truth be told, it did. courage may be fuel for willpower, but so can love both you and dick looked down from the emerald light as you took your hand out, staring at your ring. dick then softly smilied— the genuine kind of smile that you hadn’t seen in a long time. “i guess you’re stuck with me again” he murmured a choked laugh left your lips, sniffing as you ran your hands through his hair with a smile of your own. “yeah” you breathed out, voice still shaky but warm. “looks like it” “guess the universe isn’t done with us yet” “it never is” both of you laughed once again as your foreheads rested on each other, taking in both the warmth of each other and the start of not a new beginning, but a new chapter. and this time, both of you were going to do it right
