If you assess, and find restriction in a client (let’s say hamstrings), because you’re focus (you the trainer/practitioner) is on the muscle, the solution is to either Massage (if you are a therapist) or stretch it (if you are a trainer). The question you ‘need’ to ask though, is why is that tissue restricting motion. Addressing the muscle will only have short term success (in most cases), because when the Nervous system ‘resets’ your muscle spindles length (it does so for PROTECTION- not because the muscle doesn’t like you 😃) it does so far a synaptic loop between the Spinal chord (located at the dorsal horn) and the gamma motor neurons can alter/adjust length. The problem with this, is because it didn’t reach the level of the brain (cerebellum and cortex) - it didn’t alter that change for the long run (long term). Addressing the joint, and helping the joint (the space between bones- in the hamstrings case ilium and femur) ‘dissociate’ or ‘de-couple’ as the joint demands (for health as well as efficient motion) actually stimulates ‘afferent’ (proprioceptive)stimulation from the joint capsule. The joint capsule receptors (type 2 receptors) have direct cortical representation to the cortex, and when the bones (couple) as they should they automatically change the length in the spindles as they do not need to ‘tighten’ now to protect a dysfunctional joint.
