Oct. 18 ~ 51/100 Days of Productivity
Long day! My ochem midterm could have gone better but there’s nothing I can do about it now. My microbio lab this week was really cool – we each had an unknown sample and inoculated different plates, tubes, and slants a couple of weeks ago. Today we analyzed the results (i.e. a certain colour change or amount of growth meant that our unknown microorganism could metabolize a certain sugar) to identify our unknown. And my TA saved one of my plates because it turned out so well (so hopefully there’s a question about it on the lab exam next week)!! As well, I spent the evening finishing my ochem lab report (which was a painful reminder why I usually never do lab reports the night before they’re due).
I’ve been learning about algorithms and the Russell’s Paradox. Here are some interesting things I learnt…
I enjoy learning about algorithms. The difference between an algorithm and a procedure is that an algorithm terminates, where as a procedure can go forever. An example of a procedure is a program that finds all the multiples of two. It’s impossible and the program would go on forever.
Another interesting concept I learnt surrounds the question: Is it possible to build a special program that can tell you whether another program has an infinite loop or not? The answer is no, and the reason is because of Russell’s Paradox. (How can you tell whether the special program is contains an infinite loop or not?)
