Making sure Black Lives Matter at #summercamp
I am proud to be working for the Y movement that is striving to strengthen communities by helping individuals reach their best potential.
And we have work to do.
For the past six years here at YMCA Camp Ernst we have been including trainings on diversity and inclusion, tracking and analyzing identity-based incidents, examining our historical structures which have resulted in exclusion, and studying academic and narrative texts on anti-racism and other isms.
And we have work to do.
In the last few years we have circled up with other Y camps around the country to amplify the voices of our camp staff of color and commit to making our camp spaces even more beautiful—by intentionally including everyone. This means a continual commitment to accountability, recruitment, programming, staffing, training, and communicating in an authentic and caring way.
This is not political. This is human.
And we have work to do.
I am proud of our young staff members and alumni who are using their voices (many of them found at camp) for good in the world. We will continue to work for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility #for all…which means we ensure that Black lives matter at camp and in the world.
