The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley by Hannah Tinti is a book that’s been on the #backlist a while. “After years in the run, Samuel Hawley moves to his late wife’s hometown with his daughter, Loo. He works as a fisherman while Loo struggles to fit in at school and wonders about her mother’s mysterious death. Haunting them are the twelve scars on Hawley from bullets in his criminal past. A past that eventually will catch up to both of them.” This book is a combination of crime fiction and coming of age. Hawley is almost an anti-hero. He’s a criminal but wants a life for his daughter. And Loo is like every teenager trying to figure things out. The book goes from the present back to the story of every bullet wound that Hawley has. Until we get the final reckoning. The ending is vague but it works. I enjoyed this character and story from Tinti. V2 by Robert Harris is a WW ll thriller. “It’s November 1944. Willie Graf, a German rocket engineer, is launching V2 rockets at London. Graf wonders at the futility of the German effort. Kay Connolly, a young English intelligence officer, ships out to Belgium hoping to locate the launch sites. And now both sides are looking for a mole.” Harris is great at finding little explored areas of WW ll and creating characters and a story. And it always amazes me what people in the UK, especially London, endured during the war. And who knew Von Braun was an officer in the SS 😳 This book is a must for fans of WW ll historical fiction. Working through some #backlistbooks with the audiobook of All the Missing Girls from Megan Miranda. “Nicolette Farrell returns to her rural NC hometown after ten years to tie up loose ends and care for her ailing father. Soon after her return a young girl disappears and Nic is forced back to memories of her friend that disappeared years ago. And now truths and okd secrets are coming to light...” The 2nd half of this book was written in reverse. I appreciate when an author tries something different but it was difficult to follow as an audiobook 🤷🏼‍♂️ I liked the way the characters were written (even if most were unlikable) I liked the story and the twists at the end. It was just difficult to follow as an audiobook. There’s a bit of small-town darkness here. The Passengers is a #backlist title from Jihn Marrs. “Britain is moving toward all cars on the road being autonomous - self-driving and directed hy AI. Several people start their errands one day with a ride in one and soon discover they are trapped - their car taken over by someone called The Hacker. He beams the event on every social media and news platform. Why is he doing this? What do the passengers have in common? How will it end?” Definitely a wild ride from Marrs. He is great at writing the fear and tension of the Passengers and the jurors in the inquest room. I felt like I was in one of the cars hurtling along to some unknown destination. I felt like I was taking part in the inquest. Marrs makes some interesting observations about the safety of AI and self-driving cars. And there is a secret to these 😮 A nice twisty end and some expected karma. If you haven’t already, you should definitely add this to the reading list.
