Three years since Covid changed the world, and three years of adjusting to new experiences and expectations none of us could have ever imagined… but we’re still here and we’re still working to define what “normal” even looks like now, and how we might yet make the most of it. For @paigewilhog and I, travel still looks and feels different; so much of the world around us moving as if nothing ever happened, but our reality suggesting it can never be the same as it was. So what do we do? It’s a question I continuously grapple with, and the long term couldn’t seem any hazier, but I do still love travel and I still want to experience so much. Diligence with our plan and our strategy through the pandemic has been tough, it’s been straining, but I’m grateful to be making the journey with someone that understands my quirks and my (at times) compulsive attention to risk management that has included our approach to crowded spaces… there aren’t many people that still accept it. - I have so many photos from our trip to Chicago, and while so many of them are buildings and what I thought were moments with good light, I also have a handful of portraits that likely won’t meet the @paigewilhog approval standards, but I’m glad I have them. I’ve seen a lot of videos lately saying “busy” is not the way to answer when someone asks, “how have you been,” or, “how are you,” but here we are, trying to find time for ourselves among all the requests of our time. From family concerns to jobs and side projects, most of which we try not to talk too much about, when the tides shift and the overwhelming weight begins to break upon us… it’s tough. Congratulations are never wished, texts to friends remain unsent, and the demands increase farther alienating us to the hermitage we call home. I noticed yesterday’s post didn’t get a whole lot of traction, it went unseen even among some of my closest friends, but there is a part of me that accepts partial blame. A lot of people talk about the algos, not to guess at what the computer will like, but I’ve been hidden outside the platform too… so should it be that much of a surprise? “You can’t learn to paint without painting” -David McCullough - Too often we get in our own way, we want to be good before we’ve ever started, and it’s a notion that I think is less born out of fear as much as it is embarrassment. There is a self-awareness and inward criticism that tells us we should work in the dark as to not expose our art (whatever that might be) to the judgement of the world, because to look at all that others have done, how could we possibly compete? But the goal isn’t competition… It’s just being better. The quote above is from the 2008 documentary “Painting With Words”, and it has lingered in my head as I contemplate where @paigewilhog and I are heading in life. As a guide school instructor/musician/personal trainer, I understand that time, consistency, and practice are the only ways to hone a craft, yet with so many other creative outlets I’ve stopped before I ever started… doubt creeps in… my writing and my photos slide into the dark realm of avoidance and excuse. Wow, June has been…. A lot. - For most of this year @paigewilhog and I have been telling ourselves this is the year we double down on our dreams, we do the things we want to do and we truly embrace whatever our “new” normal is as we navigate the dragging on of the pandemic, and the month of June punched us harder than we could have ever anticipated. We had started to make plans again, thought we might even squeeze in a staycation to feel like we were traveling like we used to before we head to Comic Con in July… Then my mom had her stroke. The whole pandemic has felt like a roller coaster, but this last month has been a test unlike any other.
