I'm in a phase where I miss The Next Step, so I'm rewatching the dances on YouTube.
I've rewatched season 1 auditions, and here are my thoughts about who should have been on A-Troupe or not.
What I think are my criterias are: Versatility, you need to show your movements, that you can do more than just a turn or two. This is especially important for the B-Troupers who weren't in A-Troupe because they have more to prove. For the A-Troupers, they needed to show that they were not resting on their laurels, they made A-Troupe last year, but this is a new year with other people ready to take you le spot. Another criteria is personality, I think it's important to showcase your personality, to show some character in your dance, so that we can see who you are through your movements. Technique is also very important, they want to go to Regionals, so you need to have some technique to compete against the other teams.
Disclaimer: the gifs come from the next step wiki, I did not make them.
At the bottom is the Irish Dancer who doesn't have a name. I will remind you that the auditions for the first season were exclusively reserved to A-Troupers and B-Troupers (with the exception of Michelle who was an outsider and who came in the middle of the auditions).
So this dancer is on B-Troupe, which means they know that A-Troupe is a competitive team. They know it's the best dancers and that they go to Regionals, with the goal of winning. But all they have to present is this??
They're good at Irish Dance, but that's all. They didn't show any versatility, any technique, and as for personality it's quite bland. It's like "I do Irish dance" is their whole personality. So there was no way they would make it into A-Troupe. They should have left The Next Step to join a studio specialized in Irish Dance.
I don't think it should surprise you, she messed up her movement and wasn't able to move on. She was very confident at the beginning, and she did great, but the moment she messed up, it was the end. We see her being lost, she doesn't know what to do, she doesn't try to show more, she just walks away, knowing she fumbled.
Sarah was good at what she showcased but it wasn't a lot, and I didn't see any personality. It didn't feel like she really wanted to be on A-Troupe, but since she didn't messed up, she is above Beth for me.
After that is someone who was on A-Troupe and it's Stephanie.
If someone was too confident about being in A-Troupe again, it was definitely her. Even in her talking heads she says that she's Emily's best friend and that she will definitely be on A-Troupe for this reason.
Stephanie shows some great movements, I liked her transition after her leap, but her whole audition was kind of a letdown.
The beginning seems really slow, like she didn't really put her energy into it, she doesn't seem to have that fire you need when auditioning. That fire that will make you better and will show you care.
If I were Kate and Chris, I woul have cut her.
The next character I'll put in my ranking may be controversial: it's Giselle.
I LOVE Giselle, she's an amazing accro dancer, but in this audition I didn't see a lot of technique.
Yes she can do back handspring, but that's almost all she gave us. She is an amazing contenrsionist and didn't show it here. Her part on the ground was also a bit weird.
It's like she was dancing for fun, when it's an audition and she should have shown more. So I understand why she didn't make it, even though as a kid I was mad because I thought she was amazing.
After Giselle is Tiffany.
I think it's a E-girl problem to not give everything they had.
Tiffany had great energy, she is very fun to watch, she has stage presence and her hip-hop is good!
It's just that we know she can go better than this, like in season 2 when she does a back handspring. She doesn't say it's new, contrary to Riley, so I would assume she knows it at this point?
So yeah, she could have done better, because she is a great dancer no matter what people say to the hip-hop girls like her Sloane in season 4. Just because they aren't a contemporary dancer with some accro trick, doesn't mean they're not good.
He did good, he had some good moves, he was very energetic, he seemed confident in his moves, and I really appreciated him.
It's just that the other are better.
Zach was very original, he did tap dance and hip-hop. He's the contrary of the Irish Dancer, he likes tap dance so he did some, but he also really showed that he knew how to do other things. And that's what versatility is.
His hip-hop part was good, and I think he had a lot of potential and could have brought something knew to the troupe.
Maybe I am too lenient with her because Alex Beaton wasn't a dancer, but she wasn't bad at all.
Contrary to the other E-Girls she wasn't too lenient, she actually tried. She had energy, she didn't just turned, and I think she shows that she can bring something to A-Troupe.
After that is another E-Girl, it's Chloe. I loved her audition, she was really good.
She did contemporary, with some jazz movements, and you can see that she does ballet. She shows that she's flexible, that she can do accro.
As a B-Trouper, she has more to prove to Chris and Kate who don't know how these people who are on a more recreational team, can do on a competitive team. And Chloe nailed this. She was versatile, she showed that she wanted this position by giving her best.
And since I can't put more pictures in this post, I'm gonna make a part 2.
