How “danceable” were 2014s top charting hits?
With everything from the slow tempo of Lorde’s ‘Royal’ or Coldplay’s ‘Magic’ to the high tempo of Sia’s ‘Chandelier’ or Pharrell’s ‘Happy,’ this year’s top hits have left us with our headphones on, excited to hear the next beat drop or our favourite chorus. But, how much have they kept us dancing? We wanted to find out.
Taking the top 10 tracks across Europe each month, we analysed their level of danceability across the year. Though you would think tempo was everything danceability is computed b looking at a range of factors -- beat strength, stability, lyrics – all things that keep you dancing all song long.
Danceability: The Echo Nest defines danceability as the ease with which a person could dance to a song, over the course of the whole song. They use a mix of features to compute danceability, including beat strength, tempo stability, overall tempo, and more.
