How to stop doing things compulsively?
Bring more awareness to what you’re doing and into your day-to-day life.
Breathing and paying attention to it fully as it is happening is a good place to start. Just take full gentle breathes, feel the air enter, expand your chest and abdomen and then leave. Do this as often as you can remember to.
Doing this will expand the space between when you have the compulsion and the movement of you doing it. This all takes time and being gentle with yourself is the best way to go. Build momentum with this awareness and you’ll begin ti see that you can have an impulse and it can just be that, a pull to do something. Not something you actually have to do. Just a pull.
I would also look at what you’re avoiding by these impulses. The mind and what we call ego is there ti protect you from the dangers or intense feelings you’ve been through in the past. So for instance if you’ve been embarrassed at a party or in public, your thoughts and impulses will push you to not go through such an embarrassment again and push you to do things that will curtain an embarrassing situation or maybe you’ll impulsively drink to numb yourself. That is one example and we can also be pushed to do things that comfort us compulsively, like eating or smoking. Although they aren’t good for us, they can comfort us or give us a break to go outside away from all that we may find overwhelming.
If you can see all that taking place, you can begin to address the issues or unresolved things that are pushing you to do these impulsive things as an escape or as protection from unwanted feelings or outcomes. This will lead to the impulse not being as overwhelming because you can begin to just be with unwanted or intense feelings or you can see that you don’t need to escape and that you can comfort yourself in those situation.
I hope this helps and you can always talk to a therapist or other professional if this get to be too much. Doing that is always ok.
Take care,
~greg
i think i can feel hypomania prickling away behind my eyes
If you look at yourself right now, sometimes the outside situations decide what kind of person you are, isn’t it? Right now, if someone in front of you acts nasty, you will act nastier than him. Somebody gets angry with you, you get angry with him. Sometimes your chemistry takes over, sometimes your hormones take over, something else takes over, so many forces are ruling you in a compulsive way. These moments you are not really a human being. You are many things in human form. There are certain moments when you are very conscious, when you are fully aware of what you are doing, only in those moments do you truly function as a human being. If you were fully aware and conscious of what you are doing with this moment, the way you function in this world and within yourself would be very different, isn’t it? If you were very consciously creating every process of life in you, you would definitely make yourself into a very blissful and ecstatic being. Whenever you are in a state where you are very happy and joyful, you are a wonderful person for everybody around you.

If one doesn't feel like working on something or one doesn't know what to work on, it is best to close the eyes, and simply be until the right direction comes along. The worst thing to do in these situations is to give into compulsive habits; such habitual patterns of feelings, thoughts and actions bring no benefits.

A Rational Understanding CAPRICORN ♑️ #HOROSCOPE MAY 2, 2019 Feelings of #compulsiveness can make you behave reactively today. You may become easily #angered or #frustrated when life doesn't meet your expectations as old, #unconscious patterns emerge in your mind, causing you to become #overemotional. You can #combat this reactivity by thinking #rationally about each new situation you find yourself #confronted with. You may discover that your #intense emotions are caused by #unresolved issues from your past and can be thoughtfully and easily #dealt with by using a simple writing #meditation. Or you may simply need to #approach each bout of strong feelings as a separate event today. Allowing your feelings to come #freely into your #mind before letting them go may help you #concentrate more wholly on facts. Letting rational thought rather than #instinct guide you allows you to make #informed, mindful #decisions in situations both challenging and emotionally stimulating. In facing difficult circumstances, we may feel entitled to let our initial emotional response drive our reactions. But the rational mind is better #equipped to examine facts and more apt to #concern itself with hard truths. You won't let your feelings blind you to what is going on around you, nor will you let yourself become unnecessarily reactive. When you think rationally, you will seek to #understand the challenges you face and remedy them by looking first to your head and then to your heart for guidance. When you allow your rational mind to be dominant today, you will judge people and circumstances for what they are instead of how they make you feel. https://www.instagram.com/p/Bw-ErrDFfXU/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=8rh1l3hztwk8
