A Pondering on Shovel Talks
For those who aren’t familiar with the English (possibly just American) colloquialism of giving or receiving a shovel talk, it refers to someone threatening the new romantic partner of someone else (usually a family member or close friend).
Example: Mutual and Partner are dating. And Mutual and Loved One are either family or close friends. A shovel talk is when Loved One threatens Partner against hurting Mutual; these are typically threats of bodily harm to Partner. Mutual is usually not present for, or aware of the shovel talk interaction.
I’ve seen this concept subverted in various ways. Most common, is Partner threatening Loved One over Mutual; or Loved One threatening Mutual over Partner. Sometimes, Mutual will threaten Loved One over Partner. Occasionally, Partner will threaten Mutual over Loved One. But my absolute favorite, is when Mutual threatens Partner over Loved One.
I forgot where I was originally going with this. But I will return!
