We're now accepting applications for ENGin's Fall 2026 Young Leaders Fellowship — Leading for Impact. The Fellowship is a selective 12-week virtual program for motivated ENGin volunteers age 13-18 who want to build real social impact — not just read about it. In interactive, engaging online sessions, you'll explore the full journey of launching and leading a social impact project - from identifying a challenge to validating solutions to making it real to scaling sustainably. And then, you'll try it yourself with our support!

As a Fellow, you will:

This Fall, we are launching with one cohort, meeting on Sundays from 8:00PM-9:30PM Eastern time (5:00-6:30PM Pacific time) from Sept 20 to Dec 13. If you'd like to join the program but this time doesn't work well for your time zone, please let us know in your application - we will do our best to arrange alternative times depending on interest!

The program fee is $950 (USD), which includes all workshops and materials, two 1-on-1 mentoring sessions to support with your projects, a certificate and personalized recommendation letter upon request.

An ENGin volunteer Alexander has visited Ukraine twice. Twice! And he is already planning his third trip.

But first, let us tell you what makes Alexander one of the most involved people in our entire community. He volunteers in our main program with his buddy Lana. He volunteers in ENGin for Defenders with a veteran named Valeri. And he takes Ukrainian lessons through our Speak Ukrainian program with his teacher Kateryna. If there is a way to be part of ENGin, Alexander found it.

His first trip was in August 2025, with his friend and fellow ENGin volunteer John. They visited Lviv, Kyiv, Khmelnytsky, Kamyanets-Podilsky, Stryi, and Ivano-Frankivsk. In Lviv, he finally met Lana, after a year of weekly calls.

"We had become such good friends and had been speaking so regularly that to finally hang out and speak in person felt truly special. We walked around the city, visited her office and had dinner on Stryiska Street!"

His second trip happened in May 2026, and this time the itinerary got even more personal. He met his ENGin: Speak Ukrainian teacher Kateryna and they climbed to the top of the Lviv City Hall tower together.

"It was so much fun using the phrases she taught me with native speakers," he says.

Then he spent a few days with Valeri, his ENGin for Defenders buddy, who runs a veterans outreach group in Volodymyr. They went fishing with veterans, visited veterans in a local hospital, and Alexander got to ask them about their experience, in Ukrainian. "Valeri does such important and beneficial work, it was a sincere pleasure to be a part of it."

And now? "I can't wait for my next trip to Ukraine; who knows what cities I might visit next!"

Ukrainian students, do you realize what you are doing? You are the reason people like Alexander keep coming back. Every conversation you have, every story you tell, every time you show your volunteer what Ukraine is really like, you turn one person into an ambassador who tells the next person, who tells the next person. More and more of our volunteers are visiting Ukraine and we love seeing it.

So keep doing what you are doing, and if you have friends who are thinking about joining ENGin, tell them about it. Every one of us can be the person who brings Ukraine closer to someone on the other side of the world. And a bonus? Confident English and a friendship that lasts.

Sloane has been volunteering with ENGin since November 2025. Ukraine had already become an important part of her life through her relationship with a Ukrainian man, and then she joined ENGin to build more connections, learn more, and support Ukrainian students with their English. What she did not anticipate was that those weekly calls would lead to a full creative collaboration with three of her students, resulting in a storytelling embroidery collection that raises money for Ukrainian charities.

The project is called Across the Ocean, and the idea behind it is beautiful in its simplicity: each of the three students designed an embroidery piece inspired by her own life and chose a charitable cause that is personally meaningful to her. Half of the profits from each design go directly to the organization she selected.

Katia, who works in civil service while pursuing a Master's in Public Administration, designed an embroidered sun with the words "The sun is going to rise again." She says the phrase found her when she needed it most, during moments when the news and the exhaustion made it hard to believe things could feel normal again. Her chosen charity is Tabletochki, a foundation supporting children with cancer.

Anastasiia, a 21-year-old software developer, created a design around the phrase "ЖИТИ ЖИТТЯ" (live life), because as she wrote, "we only have one life, yet so often we forget to live it for ourselves." She chose Save Animals Ukraine, an organization that rescues animals affected by the war.

Mariia, from Khmelnytskyi, designed a piece about Ukrainian freedom. Her father is currently serving on the front lines, and she chose TVIY KROK, a foundation that supports Ukraine's defenders. "I wanted this design to reflect the spirit of our people," she wrote. "Brave, unbreakable, and full of light despite everything we have gone through."

"This project simply would not exist without ENGin," Sloane told us. "The friendships, conversations, and cultural exchange fostered through your program became the foundation for everything this collection represents."

This is the kind of thing that reminds us why ENGin matters beyond language practice. When a volunteer and her students take what they have built together and turn it into a project that carries Ukrainian stories, art, and voices across the ocean, while raising money for causes that matter to the people who created them — that is something worth celebrating.

Major Serhii "Phoenix" Halhan is one of our program participants. He survived a severe injury near Bakhmut in 2022, lost his leg after 14 surgeries, and is currently undergoing rehabilitation in the Netherlands. But none of it has slowed his efforts to keep Ukraine free. In his spare time, he assembles FPV drones for his unit, raises funds for medical supplies, trains other veterans, and, since December last year, has been practicing English through ENGin for Defenders with his volunteer Jenefer from San Francisco.

For Serhii, his weekly conversations with Jenefer are about more than language. "When you communicate with people from different countries, you feel included in the world again," he says. "You are not isolated. You are part of something bigger."

His volunteer Jenefer describes him simply: "Serhii's courage and determination, his fundraising and advocacy on behalf of his fellow veterans, is an inspiring message of resilience for everyone."

ENGin for Defenders is free for everyone who defends Ukraine, and it exists thanks to donations from our community. By October 1, Ukraine's Defenders Day, we want to raise $20,000 to be able to welcome 200 more defenders into the program.

ENGin is looking for a Student Orientation Trainer to lead interactive one-hour Zoom sessions for new ENGin students. You will be introducing anywhere from 10 to 60 people at a time to the program, answering their questions, helping them feel ready to get started, and making sure they leave the session excited about what is ahead.

This is a part-time remote role with around 6 to 8 hours of work per week, mostly weekday evenings and one weekend session per week. The ideal person for this role is someone who is a confident public speaker, comfortable thinking on their feet, and good at reading a room and keeping people engaged. Prior experience with training or presenting to groups is a plus, and fluent Ukrainian plus English at B1 level or above is required.
