Red

China would have killed anyone else for that, and the thought flashed red across her mind before she’d even hit the mattress. But this was becoming tiresome. They were both here for the same thing, and she wasn’t willing to wait any longer. Tanith’s fingers were clawed expectantly in the backs of her thighs, her knees pushing valleys into the bed as she situated herself between China’s legs.

Idea

By the clearing look on her face, Zoya had hit the same idea. Her hands lowered. Then she moved, darting forwards, and grabbed me hard by the arm. Instinctively I struggled, surprise dulling my reaction, but she was stronger and she dragged me to the left, onto the darkened path leading to the rose gardens and half-shoved me into the wattle fence. “What-” I managed, infuriated, and she clapped a hand over my mouth. Two palace guards strolled past on the main path. I froze under her grip, the fence digging into my spine. She was standing on my foot. We waited until the guards had passed.

Float

Once, she had looked for Rhaenyra and found her, in the sullen set of Daeron’s mouth and the proud arch of his eyebrows and the way his gaze followed her unflinchingly as she passed by. He had seemed to float like flotsam atop the ruffled ocean of gown-skirts and tailcoats, stiff in his pageboy best, the last neglected silver-haired shred of his mother’s legacy.

Glance

Rhaenys just ate, slowly, methodically, not even sparing Rhaenyra a glance. She was waiting for Rhaenyra to speak. Well. She could wait all night, then.
