Zanna can I ask for a few tips on giffing stuff? I’ve always wanted to but either didn’t have the time or didn’t know where to start
yes absolutely !!! id love to help out anyone who wants to get into giffing (even tho i still feel like a beginner myself at times)
PROGRAMS TO USE
i use photoshop to gif now, but i started out on photopea (its free, nearly identical to photoshop, but much slower to work with and you can't do some things with it).
if you don't want to pay for photoshop or dont have access to it in any way, there are cracked versions you can download, but please do this with caution cause there is risk of viruses and many links dont work anymore :/ i downloaded my photoshop through a cracked version (i believe it was this tumblr post, i hope the version still works!). this is for mac, so if you have a windows computer or something else you may have to look for one specifically for that.
DOWNLOADING YOUR VIDEOS
you can download youtube videos with 4k video downloader. i use mkvdrama to download high quality kdrama/cdramas (this is also how i watch my dramas usually).
try to find videos in at least 1080p to download, the higher the quality, the better. you'll want your video to be an mp4 when you put it into photoshop to gif as ps sometimes won't open other video files. i recently started using handbrake to convert mkv files to mp4 and it works really great! let me know if you'd like help with using that
IMPORTING THE VIDEO INTO PS
i'll explain my process to you, but i also recommend reading through gif tutorials on tumblr. there are so so many by a lot of great gifmakers with years and years of experience giffing. they will probably be a lot more detailed, informative, and in depth that what i write here lol
when you open photoshop, you'll want to go to file > import > video frames to layers and then choose your video
ps will then give you a box where you can trim the specific length you want the gif to be. you can test play it and make sure you just get the part you want to be in the gif. you can also use the limit to every __ frames to make sure your video doesn't load into photoshop with 200 layers lol.
a tip for knowing when the limit the frames: for gifs that you know will be 540px (aka making a 1 gif per row set, i'll talk about this more later) the max amount of frames you can usually get away with is 60-70. a lot of gifmakers use 50 frames as their target. i do this too but i wouldnt be too fussy if its a few frames over. you just need to make sure the final gif is below 10mb, as that is the max file size to upload to tumblr :) so for sets that will be 2 gifs per row or 3 gifs per row, you can get away with a lot more frames.
TIMELINE AND CROPPING
when your video loads into photoshop, you'll see the frames in the timeline at the bottom and all your editing options to the right. the first thing i usually do is test play the gif to see if there are any frames i want to delete. there might be some extra frames at the beginning or end of the clip due to inaccurate trimming when you imported it, or there might be a harsh camera flash or awkward movement that you want to cut out. you can delete a layer or two in the middle of the gif without it being too noticeable, so when im dealing with a photoshoot behind or similar video (when giffing kpop) i will often try to cut those frames out.
once im happy with all the frames, i'll use the crop tool to get the dimensions i want for my gif.
my next step is to change the image size to either 540px, 268px, or 177px. for your gif to show up the best on tumblr, these are the px dimensions you should be using depending on the type of gif set (1 gif per row, 2 gifs per row, and 3 gifs per row respectively).
CONVERT TO VIDEO TIMELINE & CREATE SMART OBJECT
once i'm happy with the cropping on my gif, have changed the dimensions of it, and sorted out all the frames, i click the convert to video timeline button at the bottom
then i select all of my layers on the right where the editing is, right click, and click convert to smart object
this will make the entire gif into one layer that you can apply edits to such as sharpening, gaussian blur, de-noise/add noise, camera raw filter and more!
SHARPENING & FILTERS
once you've gotten through all the technical stuff, now is the fun part! editing your gif :) this is where gifmaking is truly an art and you become the artist. you get to decide what edits to make and how you'd like to colour your gif. i tend to do colouring based on the gif. i haven't messed around with psds at all, but it may be something i look into in the future potentially.
my process for editing the smart object is usually as follows: camera raw filter > smart sharpen > gaussian blur
camera raw filter: i only adjust texture and clarity, and i do this depending on the gif. slide the adjusters around and see what you like the look of!
smart sharpening: again my settings are based on what i think the gif needs. could be anywhere from 100-500
gaussian blur: i set this to 0.2. it may not look noticeable at all but it does slightly soften out the sharpening (and gif overall) which can be quite nice if things look too harsh
COLOURING VIA ADJUSTMENT LAYERS
for my gifsets, i use multiple adjustment layers to create the colour edits i want.
i always start out with curves: i usually move it in a slight S shape with 2 points. just play around with it and you will learn what you like/what looks best
next is hue/saturation: i like to turn up the saturation on most gifs (cause most kpop vids are so desaturated...). i may also slightly adjust the yellows to be a bit redder or do other slight edits on the specific colour settings. this is all up to personal preference :)
brightness/contrast: most gifs need to be brightened, especially if you're giffing kpop stuff. i sometimes adjust the contrast as well depending on what looks good!
levels: i am still new to using levels ngl (cause im still new to gifmaking in general!) but i've started to use it and i like the slight adjustments it can make. i usually just slide each slider to see how it affects the gif and decide whether to use it or not (a lot of time its very very slight adjustments). often with the levels layer, i will turn the visibility on and off to see what the gif looked like before/after the adjustment and really decide whether i like it or not. this is a good thing to do with any adjustment layer or edit that you do to make sure it looks right!
selective colour: i used to use this heavily in my colouring process, but not so much anymore. i will sometimes still use it if there is a specific colour i want to adjust a bit more that i can't do with hue/saturation. for example, if the reds are too vibrant, i may bring the cyan up a bit on selective colour. this will neutralize the reds a bit. again, my best advice is play around with the adjustments and learn what you personally like!
EXPORTING THE GIF
i like to adjust the timing of the gif at the end after all the edits. to do this, i need to convert things back to timeline from animations.
select all your layers and turn them into 1 smart object again > flatten frames into clips > convert timeline > make frames from layers > delete the first layer
then select all your layers and edit the frame delay. i usually do 0.05-0.09 depending on what the gif needs. you can test play it to see the speed (but i usually test play it on the export).
to export your gif when it's finally ready, go to file > export > save for web (legacy)
it'll show up like this, choose the top right option and then save!
here's your final gif! for this tutorial i decided to show the colouring i did (left mine, og on the right) so you can see the difference the edits can make :)
okay this got a lotttt longer than i thought it was going to. i was originally gonna do a quick little tutorial but ended up going more in depth (but still not as detailed as some tutorials out there!!! definitely search and read multiple tutorials cause some people's processes may be different. you may like to do things a bit differently, so experiment and figure out what you like the best! giffing is a lot of trial and error and you will improve with every set you make so don't give up <3) let me know if you have any other questions i'd be happy to answer anything and help with whatever i can! happy giffing !!!
