bundesrat (Federal Council) 1918 - 1938 - 1989:

November 9 is a day steeped in history; it is as significant as it is ambivalent for German history.

For Bundesrat President Bodo Ramelow, it is a day of remembrance. "This fateful day in German history obliges us to take a responsible stand against forgetting history. Our joint commitment to democracy and human rights, to freedom and tolerance is indispensable."

In 1918, the first German republic was proclaimed in Berlin on November 9, marking the end of the monarchy in Germany.

The day also represents one of the darkest chapters in German history, the terror against Jewish people on Pogrom Night in 1938 and the subsequent years of Nazi crimes involving deportations and mass murder.

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, November 9 has symbolically stood for the great happiness of German unity, which the people of the GDR had fought for.
