Meine Rezension:

Ein einfach wunderschön geschriebener, spannender und gleichzeitig auch trauriger Roman. Kazuo Ishiguros Bücher gefallen mir immer insbesondere wegen seinem fließenden und bildlichen Schreibstyle. Kazuo Ishiguro schafft es auf eine besondere Art und Weise seine Charaktere durch ihre Gedanken, ihre Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft zum Leben zu erwecken. Insbesondere Rückblicke in die Vergangenheit der Charaktere beschreibt Kazuo Ishiguro immer mit sehr viel Detail. Diese Rückblicke schätze ich immer sehr, so als würde man die Charaktere durch jeden Rückblick neu entdecken. Das Besondere an den Geschichten Kazuo Ishiguros ist außerdem, dass man die Charaktere und damit in diesem Roman Christopher Banks während wichtigen Scheidepunkten ihres Lebens begleitet. Dieses Mal begleitet man Christopher Banks dabei endlich die Geschehnisse seiner Kindheit aufzuarbeiten und seine Eltern, als erfolgreicher Londoner Detektiv, in Shanghai wieder zu finden, wo sie vor Jahren entführt wurden.

The Fifth Season

Oh my goodness. It’s rare that I give out 5 out of 5 Awesome Points because it’s rare that I stumble across a book in which I become completely immersed. However, when it happens, I fall real hard into the fandom for that book and author. The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin is one such book. I mean, The Fifth Season won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2016 and the subsequent books in the trilogy (The Obelisk Gate [2016] and The Stone Sky [2017]) won the next two years! If that’s not a recommendation in and of itself, then I don’t know what is!

But, seriously, I loved this book. Jemisin has created a world called The Stills in which the Earth is always quaking or erupting followed by Seasons that cull and push the boundaries of humanity. Within this world orogenes are feared and used for their powers and connection to the planet - they control the Earth with their mind and will. In The Fifth Season, Jemisin layers the stories of three women - young Damaya, fiery Syenite, and motherly Essun - as they venture through this world trying to make sense of the events unfolding around them. The events that lead to the end of the world.

I would be spoiling too much if I say more about the plot, but let me tell you that Jemisin crafted this world so beautifully. She takes us through this world, layering story lines upon each other with sophisticated ease. She unravels the tapestry of this world, thread by thread, revealing the nature of these protagonists, their companions, and the entire culture in ways that left my mouth hanging open and my hands jumping to turn the next page.
