This morning I got screamed at and blocked and mocked as tl;dr for explaining to someone for the fortieth time why Steven’s reintegration in “Change Your Mind” was not in fact a nice metaphor for being able to finally hug his mother. (Lessons learned not to argue with people named “poprocksinmyass” I guess?)

Only to now run into a weird person who is “lmfao-ing” at the very concept that people “think” Rose and Pearl were in a relationship. They laughed at a person suggesting this was true, “corrected” them to say Pearl just learned to be free and more herself through Rose and therefore cared about her a lot, and rolled their eyes about how many people “misinterpreted” Rose and Pearl’s relationship by drawing romantic fanart. I’m ??????

Looking in the person’s post history they also apparently used “they” pronouns for Garnet because “Sapphire is a boy and Ruby is a girl,” and therefore Garnet is a they. I guess if you ignore a) Garnet’s consistent “she” pronouns throughout the show; b) Sapphire and Ruby both being “she” Gems and they are NOT a boy and a girl; and c) that this is one of the queerest shows on TV and you have to reaaaaaaach to see straight people here . . . then yeah sure that makes so much sense.

it’s EXTREMELY disrespectful !!!!!!

1) queer is not a slur that is as common anymore and the lgbt people who struggled with it the most are typically older than this ugly tumblr generation!

so as a result: they have actual trauma and triggers around the word. don’t force them to be a slur bc you uwu want to.

2) it’s disrespectful to all of the lgbt people who died in the aids crisis! they died being called queer! we can’t just call them queer because we feel like it. especially when we say things like “queer history.”

3) a lot of lesbians don’t identify as queer! actually most of us don’t! queer is a vague word. it can mean you’re fluid in your sexuality or your gender. it can mean you’re 100% gay or that you 10% gay.

that being said it implies that lesbians’ sexuality is fluid or it can be fluid! which it isn’t!!! so don’t call us queer unless an individual lesbian asks to be called that.

also the word lesbian is always scooted around bc it’s considered dirty and it’s just a way for you guys to be lazy and not call us by our name just like everyone else on this fucking planet!

4) literally lots of people have trauma from the word and don’t want to reclaim it! just bc you want to reclaim doesn’t mean literally anyone else wants to!

Hi everyone! I am an undergrad linguistics major, and I'm currently taking a socioling class. For our final project, we need to do research on a community/social movement. I am LGBT and consider myself deeply intertwined with the community, and I found myself curious about a movement I have seen pop up more recently. If you have opinions about slurs, reclamation, and the usage of "the Q slur" and you would like to share them, your responses on this survey would be invaluable to me! I am especially looking for LGBT participants, but responses from people of all demographics are useful. Trigger warning for the mention of LGBT slurs without censorship.

I will not disclose my personal opinion on these topics, as that would be unbefitting of a researcher. If you know my personal opinions, please leave them off this post.

The survey should take no longer than 20 minutes to complete. A majority of my participants thus far have completed it in about 10. Thanks for taking the time to share your views with me! And if you feel like it, please signal boost this post so I can get an even larger pool of responders!
