Today Tania told me something along the lines of: ‘Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that I would be growing Puerto Rican crops here in Philadelphia.’ We had just gathered these Gandul seeds at her house, and she added them to a small bag of Recao leaves I brought from our farm. Tania and her partner Grimaldi have been apprenticing with Truelove Seeds this year, and it has been so wonderful to get to know them and build community with them (and their ancestral plants). At their garden, @grumblethorpehistoric, they grow Aji Dulce, the pepper that Tania combines with a Recao leaves and a few other ingredients for making Sofrito. Tania and Grimaldi are growing the Aji Dulce for our seed catalog this year! Here they are with the Ajis, some extra Gandules, and a couple Parchas, and of course a machete and a Puerto Rican flag to really bring it all home. These plants are destined for their gardens at Grumblethorpe Historic House in our shared neighborhood of Germantown, Philadelphia! I grew a bunch of varieties of peppers and tomatoes in my hoop house to try out this year, isolated from my seed crops to prevent cross pollination. I'm just getting to the peppers now, so I realized I lost some ripe fruit to rodent damage.
