They considered it. They strongly considered it. Because Shane was the one who was already famous, Shane was the one that everyone’s been fucking vivisecting, but the thing is? The guy who was most exposed from this was Dave. It’s his phone. It’s just that people mostly focused on the parts relating to Shane.

People like David Hollander from this. They feel like they know him. He’s a legend they want to smoke weed with. Like, overwhelmingly, the guy that people want making public appearances right now is Shane himself he just can’t because he’s so medically unwell that they can’t let him outside, Ilya’s the other half of Hollanov so he’s in second place, but third and fourth place? That’s fucking Dave and Yuna Hollander.

Shane’s parents are absolutely flawed but they’re also supportive and funny and they love their boys so fucking much. And they both had a huge presence in Dave’s phone. People adore them. They want to hear from them.

Dave and Yuna both were willing. They love Shane and they’d do anything for him, and Dave is absolutely drowning in guilt over this. He’d do anything to help make it right. Shane categorically refused to let that happen and threatened to pull the plug on everything if they tried.

Fundamentally, Shane views his fame as a bad thing. He hates it. It is the deal he made with the devil to play hockey and it is the source of so much pain and suffering for him. And now he is staring down the barrel of the biggest violation of his life and realizing he has to actively make it worse to get back on the ice.

He’ll pay that price. He cannot stomach the idea that his parents have to pay it too.

Shane meant what he said in his statement—his parents are private citizens and he has tried to preserve their privacy despite being the most famous hockey player alive before the leak happened. He doesn’t want his parents to be public personalities. He doesn’t want this to be the rest of their lives even if this is the rest of his life.

Shane found out that Dave was in therapy because of how worried he was about him less than 72 hours ago when they were having their first war council on this mess. He had no idea his dad had picked up on anything past vague thoughts of “maybe he’s gay” and “wow there’s sure some chemistry between Shaney and Rozanov at this the 2017 all stars game. Surely if anything happened between them it would be at this, the 2017 all stars, and not a different, earlier all stars.” He sure as shit didn’t know that his dad was so worried about him that an ambulance had to be called because the stress was bad enough to simulate heart attack symptoms.

These freaks are reading his dad’s therapy emails. And Shane will not fucking let his dad go out there like a dancing monkey for his sake. He can’t get off this ride if he wants to keep playing hockey but maybe his parents can. Maybe if they don’t lean into this the world will eventually stop focusing on them.

Yuna and Dave are pushing back on it. They want to protect him any way they can, and they suddenly both have the kind of international followings that usually belong to boy band heartthrobs and k-pop idols. That’s a gun they don’t want to leave on the table. They want to save their son and they will do what it takes for that.

Shane is vitrolically against the idea, and he’s just so physically unwell right now that they’ve decided to not press the issue too hard. He just reacted so strongly against the idea that his parents should lean into the fact that they are now public figures that they decided to shelve the issue until he was better.

Right now, everyone’s just trying to get Shane to sleep. That is the number one priority. They are trying to limit any and all sources of stress so his body will stop trying to shut down its own organs by sheer force of will, and they are trying to get him to sleep before he has a fucking stroke. So the fight of “should David Hollander lean into the fact that he is now babygirl to ask the internet to be nicer to his son” has mostly been shelved for the moment, because Shane experienced an ungodly amount of stress the first time they raised it. They’ll raise it again after they get Shane into a better place mentally. Which. Will hopefully be soon.
