hi i just wanted to say that i absolutely adore your heated rivalry works (both snapping birch and the child star crashout au)
and one of my favorite things about your stories besides the amount of effort and care and thought you put into each of the characters to make sure they come of as real and have their own unique narratives (the work your putting in really comes through in your writing and makes your works so fun and engaging and fulfilling to read)
and just how incredibly well you tackle complex themes and ideas and just never present a simple solution and instead make the reader sit with your work and just fully acknowledge how fucked up the situation is and then draw real life parallels to our own world is literally so fucking good, you donât even understand
sorry i got sidetracked and also used a lot of ands so double sorry if that made it hard to read
anyway what i wanted to say is that i love that you fully recognize that shane transferring to ottawa is not a happy ending. i think a lot of people acknowledge shaneâs right to be angry and have lingering trauma about the metros, but thatâs also usually side by side with (or sometimes the exclusive sentiment is) the âoh! he gets to be with ilya now on a team thatâll accept him so everythingâs sunshine and rainbows!! <3â
i havenât seen anyone else straight up go âhey. that shouldnât have happened. the metros should not have been able to force out shane fucking hollander and shane shouldâve been able to stay with the metros if that was what he wanted. he shouldâve been granted a choice.â
i just think itâs so important to recognize that shane shouldâve been able to choose where he was going to play. that the lack of choice is really just an extension of being forced out of a space that he used to belong in, itâs a reminder that heâs been othered so he should be grateful that he has any options to begin with. and thatâs just something heâll have to live with that
also maybe itâs just me but one of my instant turn offs thatâs unfortunately really popular in this fandom is when shaneâs characterized to not have been a good captain, as never wanting to be, or not liking his role as captain - or when heâs written to have never gotten along with any of the other metros ever (which makes no sense cause why would he choose to come out to them??)
just anything that creates a narrative to soften the blow of shane being forced out of the metros by turning it into âwell he didnât actually like it there and is probably really happy to have leftâ
i just think it diminishes his feelings on the situation. like personally i would be so fucking angry to begin with but iâd also probably be grieving. and also shit was just happening to this man. he had such limited agency when it came to the situation with the metros and i just really hate how thatâs usually completely glossed over or simplified
so i really fucking appreciate you going no. itâs not fucking fair or right that shane has to be the one to leave, and then actually exploring his relationship to the metros (and montreal) in a nuanced way that acknowledges that the situation is actually really fucking complex. that man has been a part of that organization and a staple in that city since he was a teenager, chances are he has some attachment to it - so even if he was happy to get to be with ilya year round and play on the cens, he was probably still feeling some type of way about the metros - because guess what? emotions are not neat and tidy and you canât just move away from the source of you conflicting feelings to make those feelings go away.
so, yeah, youâre creating some really amazing writing with some really fucking amazing character analysis so thank you for putting it out into the world <3
(sorry for this being so absurdly long, i really didnât mean for it to be - it got away from me and i got too attached to cut anything)
I have never fucked with an ask harder in my entire life. Anon, you are speaking my entire language.
So, full disclaimer, I know the Ottawa ending is very popular with a lot of readers, and not every story is going to be my cup of tea. That is okay. Not every story is written for me, and that is totally fine, I get that. If you like the ending of the long game, I fully respect that, but maybe skip this post, because I did not like it and I donât have super charitable things to say about it.
Can I ask why you decided to make Hayden a bad player? This isn't a dissertation at all I'm genuinely curious because you seem to know your hockey but Hayden's referred to as a unremarkable player except for his friendship with Shane and I'm wondering why because in my mind he has to be a top scoring player if he plays on a line with Shane. I guess it could be a throwaway line but you seem to have so many detail in your fic so I'm really curious why! I love the fic đ
Heâs not a bad player. Heâs an excellent player. Heâs a first line wing for one of the top teams in the entire League. Of course heâs excellent.
Haydenâs referred to as an unremarkable player because the person who wrote that article is participating in a smear campaign.
About the geopolitical implications of Shane and Ilya coming out, the show has painted itself into a huge corner with Svetlana. She's the daughter of a (former?) Russian minister. We can safely assume her dad is definitely one of Putin's oligarchs. She regularly goes back home. Ilya coming out would paint a huge target on her back as well and put her in a great amount of danger. She wouldn't be able to go back home either.
So now you have Ilya wanting to come out despite this putting two POCs in danger. I'm really curious how they're going to handle this because the implications are bleak as hell.
There's also the matter of Ilya's brother and niece who would probably end up as political prisoners/pawns in Putin's game of one upmanship.
The more I think on it, the crazier it gets with their coming out. Suddenly, the entire continent of Europe would care about hockey so they can make memes about whether Ilya has fucked Putin or whether Putin has sucked Ilya's dick. There would be songs, sketches and endless commentary. JD Vance the couch fucker or Trump/Clinton would be peanuts in comparison.
Shane, Ilya, (show) Svetlana and everyone near them would have targets on their backs for the rest of their lives. The Long Game makes no fucking sense. Ilya would know all this. People from former Soviet/communist countries live in constant fear of the state. It's been 36 years since the fall of the Berlin wall and my parents are still cautioning me against saying too much against the government, even in the privacy of my own home. And I'm not even Russian, it's way worse over there.
Having citizenship certainly helps but it doesn't mean Ilya's safe from political repercussions. I am losing my mind thinking about it. Sorry if I'm not making sense but it's so crazy to me how Rachel has glossed over all of this so Ilya can throw a tantrum cause his boyfriend won't go with him to a party.
I really do wish we saw more about just who Ilya Rozanov is in Russia because it has the potential to inform so much of the conflict.
you talking about the security threats Shane faces and how it's so normalized reminded me of one of my pet peeves about how this fandom reacts to Shane's sex condo
He is right that if Ilya were to come to his normal apartment he would get papped and they both would get caught and that they should instead meet up at a secondary location!!! He's hockey Jesus in Montreal! You think theres no one outside his apartment building waiting to get an "outfit of the day" on a slow news day? You think whoever they send to go hang out outside Shane Hollander's apartment isn't going to recognize Ilya fucking Rozanov his greatest rival? The likelihood of them getting caught goes up so much more when spending time together in any type of place Shane Hollander is known to spend time around, that's just what happens with high level celebrities and Shane Hollander in fuckign Montreal is a high level celebrity!
Hockey players just don't have that level of sheer instant recognition in the States, even in Boston, a hockey city, so not needing a secondary location there makes sense a bit. But in fucking Montreal??? Yeah, that's not Shane being adorabley paranoid about anyone overhearing, that's him being practical.
Iâve said it before and Iâll say it again, I really think so much of canon and fanon would benefit from the context that Shane plays for goddamn Montreal.
Shane very likely got dropped kicked into a much higher level of âlocal celebrityâ type fame than Ilya did at the start of their careers. This has nothing to do with their promise as prospects or relative fame going into thisâitâs pure location. Montreal is one of the most hockey-obsessed cities on the goddamn planet, and Shane Hollander was the trailblazing prospect who was being eyed to revitalize the entire team. Shane was probably getting recognized in 9/10 of his interactions in that city. Shane Hollander is fuck off famous in his city. And while Ilya himself is absolutely a major celebrity in his own right, his brand of hometown fame was probably much less invasive than Shaneâs purely because I sincerely doubt there is a single city in North America that can compete with Montrealâs concentration of dedicated sports fans. It is purely about the kind of markets they got dropped into. Ilya found himself in a popular market with Boston but Shane found himself in what may be the hockey hub of the world.
Think of the scene where they first talk about it. Ilya says that theyâll fuck at Shaneâs apartment like itâs no big deal. Shane is immediately so stressed out by the idea that Ilya is like âyouâre having a panic attack. Calm down itâs just a plan to fuck.â
You can read that as âShane is adorably paranoid about being overhead whereas Ilya is calmer.â Or you could read it as âShane was signed by a team located in the city with one of the largest hockey markets on the planet and so Ilyaâs approaching this from the perspective of whoâs sometimes recognized in the club or the store as the next big thing in hockey but can for the most part still go about his day and Shaneâs coming at it from the perspective of someone who hasnât left his apartment without having his privacy violated since he was signed to the goddamn team so this reaction is pretty reasonable, actually.â
Ilyaâs not tapped into fucking Montreal local news. At this point in canon, heâs played in Montreal maybe once. Itâs probably as simple as a plan to fuck at Shaneâs apartment for him. But for Shane, his own home is very likely not a safe option.
Shane probably laid in that all stars bed with Scott Hunter a wall over having a panic attack about the idea of them fucking in his actual apartment because he was thinking about the number of times heâd already been papâd trying to go into his own goddamn complex. People probably wait in locations heâs known to frequent hoping to catch a glimpse of him. If they get a sight of Ilya Rozanov showing up to fucking Shane Hollanderâs apartment complex, people are going to talk.
In light of that, the sex condo is one of Shaneâs more reasonable safety measures. He created an option where he controlled access to the entrances and exits. He could skulk in there in a hoodie with his head down once in a blue moon and have no one else ever associate that building with Shane Hollander. He was an incredibly famous teenager in the hub of his fame who was trying to minimize risk that was born of a crushing amount of scrutiny focused directly on him. It was a smart decision. He shouldnât get shit for it.

I understand that you don't want to imagine Ilya's phone leaking because it would be so incredibly depressing, but also, after reading that Ovechkin has Putin's phone number, please consider: the hypothetical Ilya phone leak leaking fucking Vladimir Putin's phone number.
This would have such obscenely far reaching consequences that it boggles the mind but right now all I can think of is Ilya texting Shane âsorry baby one second some desperate whore is blowing up my phone and it is so annoying let me take care of thisâ and then thirteen seconds later sending a text reading âHello President Putin. Thank you for all of your messagesâŚâ
I would love the Yuna The Truck lore if you are willing to provide it, obsessed with the snapshot glimpses we get of this woman đ
I am in love with Yuna âThe Truckâ Hollander.
I am so curious about the tidbit of the leak in Snapping Birch being how Ilya discovers that Shane is autistic. Has he or anyone else close to suspected? How do people feel about Shane not telling them? How does SHANE feel about his autism diagnosis being known not just by the public but by people he knows personally? SO interested
So Iâm gonna confine this discussion to whatâs already come out in snapping birch.
