Question for the Mel lovers out there (I haven’t rewatched her scenes enough to be an expert so I might have missed something): is your understanding of her that she has never figured out that she is autistic? Did her parents never have her assessed because they were of course more focused on Becca? Did Mel never come across this in her research that she talks about doing into her aversions to foods? Does Mel think about autism as only the more severe end of the spectrum because of Becca? Does she kind of know this about herself but not want to claim space in this way? Is she uncomfortable with what this diagnosis would mean about her? Does she know and not discuss it at work? Or has this really never clicked for her? Or somewhere in between? What’s your head canon on any understanding she has of the fact that she seems to have autism but not acknowledge it?

based off of what we know from canon and what taylor has said in interviews, i believe that she doesn’t know. my reasoning is that it’s very easy for children that are atypically autistic to fly under the radar, especially when they have an autistic sibling that shows symptoms more outwardly. it makes sense to me that mel’s parents simply didn’t pick up on her autistic traits because they were too focused on becca’s needs, and then when they were gone mel herself was solely focused on becca’s needs and likely hasn’t done any internal reflection since then.

sometimes thinking about the pitt makes me cry because mel is always being isolated and i feel like that a lot
