HOWEVER. and its a big however. the writers (like many things) fumbled what could have been an adorable dynamic between the four of them by having the ACTUAL pittling trio (javadi, whitaker, and santos) all treat her like she's weird! like, in the paper shredder scene, mel has to nudge her way in just to get to the shredder, and then trinity and even dennis are kind of :| about her presence until she kicks it and the scene ends. isa briones says that mel is a "punching bag" for trinity because she doesn't understand the jokes she makes and trinity KNOWS that, and their dynamic has been weird since season 1 (but that needs a post in and of itself). dennis finds mel's coping mechanisms in season 1 odd. javadi and mel never interact with one another, so one of the only concrete moments we have between the two is javadi going "MEL?" and not following up with what she thought mel's supposed problem was, and dennis doesn't require any clarification because he understands exactly what she meant by that.

the pittlings dynamic ultimately doesn't work the way that i want it (and the writers want it) to work out! because mel is continously othered in that damn ER!

which, i will say, does create this interesting dynamic when it comes to mel's characterization. mel is in the weird middle-zone where she doesn't really belong with ANYBODY in that ER (sans langdon, of course). she hasn't been in the ER as long as langdon, samira, cassie, and (when she was here) heather, and doesn't fit in quite as well with the senior residents' dynamic. but then you also have the pittlings, and mel doesn't fit in THERE despite being there as long as they have, because the pittlings find her weird and offputting. this really builds up this feeling of mel being alone. she doesn't HAVE people that she's able to turn to, not even her attending, who brushed her off immediately after asking her if she had people to talk to. this then spirals into mel's attachment issues and how quickly she clings to langdon, and how unwilling/scared she is to let becca branch off and be her own person outside of The King Twins.
