Nick Offerman Answers the Webâs Most Searched Questions âWIRED, 2020
I always love how un-Ron this man is
People/Steamers crying about getting shit over buying and playing hogwarts legacy vs trans people dealing with politicians and pundits calling for their genocide and being kind of understandably furious at streamers for enabling JK Rowlingâs anti semitism and transphobia in the midst of fascists using any means to get legitimacy to kill lgbt people.
Edit: Free Terf and fascist blocklist in the notes. Turned off reblogs due to bad fucking takes and increasing hostility, and my own personal frustration. This was over trans people facing hate and Streamers and people drawing attention to the fact they are playing a video game with an author is against them and getting pushback for it, they are not comparable things. Some people were also using it for transphobic propaganda. Fuck that.
Edit Edit: I am cis. I have turned off reblogs, and presumably will not have to hear anything else about harry potter unless I choose to. I am choosing not to engage with it. The same way with how streamers could choose not to engage with it. This? This is the whole fucking point of the post. Iâm not trans, I donât have to argue my rights to anyone. Trans people do. It was a basic, human thing, to not play one bad fucking wizard game. If you try to wiggle your way out of it or argue, youâre an asshole.
Edit Edit Edit: Reblogs Back on. Fuck it. Go ahead and take your mask off if you want to miss the point or be an asshole. Love the Rest of yall

As someone who streams games, it is absolutely ridiculous to see some streamers cry that they themselves are being âboycottedâ when a solid chunk of their viewers call them out for streaming Hogwarts Legacy and then stop watching.
You donât get to complain if a game you choose to stream makes some of your viewers not feel particularly welcome anymore. That is entirely on you.
Hogwarts Legacy will sell millions of copies, and if you really want to play it then you can choose not to stream it. You can just shut up and play it.
But donât squirm and try to justify it with shit like âOh Iâm playing it to support the devsâ unless you purchase every single game that gets released.
If you buy this game and then go online to make weird justifications about why you âjust had to play/stream/review itâ then you are an objectively bad person.
Just own your purchasing decision. Donât seek validation from people online because you feel ashamed.
Normally I'm with you on these things, but I don't think hogwarts players go around hatecriming trans people. We, as a collective on the internet, are making a bigger deal out of a game instead of real transphobic politicians and governments. I don't just mean you or Scottish people as a whole. I mean fucking everyone.
Can we please start taking real action against harmful transphobia instead of judging people for supporting a franchise they like? Separate the art from the artist, even though nobody listens to that.
Honestly this sounds like another cheap justification. Go and play it if you want to but for the record I disagree with you because all of this adds up.
Purchasing the game contributes to Rowlingâs wealth and cultural standing. JK Rowling directly platforms far-right anti trans groups like the one we saw in Glasgow a few days ago. She is shoulder to shoulder with bigots in Parliament. She is very much part of the problem.
Iâm not Jewish and Iâm a cis guy, I donât get to judge what the game is or isnât through those lenses. But if there were two cafes to choose from and Iâm told by Jewish and LGBT people that one cafe owner harasses and targets them, Iâm choosing the other cafe.
JK Rowling has specifically explicitly said that buying her shit means you agree with her. Like it's not even "you give her money and she uses that for shit causes" she actually believes, and says so, that all her fans - all the people still buying HP shit - are transphobic and scared to say so
Cheap justification indeed. Listen. Fighting bigotry doesn't just mean big dramatic actions. It means not allowing any place for bigotry, no matter how small, in your life. The more these ideas appear to be widely accepted in society, by people from all walks of life and all political alignments, the more powerful they will become. And the bigots will say, "Everyone thinks trans women are predators. Everyone thinks Jewish people have too much power. It's not a political opinion, see? It's just facts we can all agree on."
Maybe that's not the signal you meant to send when you bought Hogwarts: Blood Libel, but it's one you're sending whether you like it or not.
it's true that simply killing billionaires would not fix problems inherent to capitalism but elon musk? you can't tell me things wouldn't be at least slightly more bearable

Evolutionary biologist here! What they say is 100% true. 'Survival of the fittest' only refers to how successful an organism is at enduring their environment long enough to reproduce, and is not at all tied to the idea that those who are the 'best' are the only ones that survive. Evolution does not care if you keel over dead the second you give birth to a baby, it only cares if that baby survives long enough to breed again. What is the 'fittest' is almost entirely environmentally subjective; that's how you have creatures like horses that are basically living trainwreaks still roaming about vs something that people think would be better suited to filling their ecological niche. No genology or phenology has inherent worth over the other, all that matters is if they were capable of passing their genes on to the next generation
You know what gives us a huge evolutionary advantage, past our high cognitive ability? Our intense social bonding. Humans are outstandingly social creatures, and that has magnified all of our successes as well as our downfalls. The trait that made us the fittest for our environment wasn't just sheer dumb luck (though it was certainly partially attributed to that in some cases), it was love. We wouldn't be where we are if we didn't care enough about each other to value each life as highly as our own, and anyone who tells you otherwise is a fucking idiot.

Ugh that post has gotten me thinking about fat acceptance in a way I havenât in years. Iâve read more studies about weight and health than probably any other topic Iâve ever researched. And every time I see someone wail about health I am just like
Did you know that in post-mortem examinations there is zero correlation between weight and levels of arteriosclerosis and related diseases found?
Did you know that people with an overweight BMI have the longest life expectancy, that those with an âidealâ and an âobeseâ have about the same life expectancy, and that being âunderweightâ raises mortality rates more than being âmorbidly obeseâ?
Did you know that losing weight and then gaining it back is worse for your heart than remaining at the weight you started consistently?
Did you know that 95% of people who lose weight do gain it back, and there has never been a single documented weight loss program that has been demonstrated to keep the weight off for five years or more in the majority or even a significant minority of people? Like, telling people to lose weight isnât much use if we donât know HOW to make that happen.
Like I have read The Obesity Myth by Paul Campos and Rethinking Thin by Gina Kolata and Big Fat Lies by Glenn A Gaesser (Ph.D!) And Fat!So? and several other books that I donât own and so donât remember all of their names I spent like four years reading every single study coming out and looking at the methodology and noting which ones had huge holes or terrible methods and which didnât (the holes were almost always in the pro-weight-loss studies) and like
Big Fat Lies has 27 pages of bibliography. 27 pages worth of scientific citation. The book content itself is only 197 pages. Thatâs a page of references for every 7 pages of book. Reading the book is just reference after reference and study after study. Most of these doctors (like Linda Bacon, author of Health at Every Size) started out the same way. They wanted to use the scientific method to find a real weight loss program or health solution that worked and could be proven to work, and so studied everything they could about weight and fitness only to find out that we didnât need weight loss in the first place. That all the studies calling for it were lacking or nonexistent. That weight and underlying metabolic health have very little relation. That the history of our relationship with health and obesity has little basis in fact and a LOT of basis in capitalism, politics, and fashion. No, really, the association between weight and health was first proposed by insurance companies looking for ways to charge people more by claiming risk. They also charged tall and short people more. And people with different skin colors. When they got in trouble for charging people for things they had no control over and had no bearing on their health, they set out to prove that weight was controllable and that fat was unhealthy to make money.Â
These are also a lot of the same people who went on to invent the Presidentâs fitness program, so if you went to public school you probably already hate them.Â
Anyway, if you want a place to start reading about the issue, this article is a pretty good launching pad.Â
This casual rant is like a primer on weight science. Amazing. I second their book recommendations, and would add to the list Body Respect by Drs Bacon & Aphramor, Body of Truth by journalist Harriet Brown, and Whatâs Wrong with Fat? by UCLA professor of sociology Abigail Saguy.
man I remember that time I reblogged an anti-fatphobia post and lost a follower and reader who took the time to come into my DMs and rant about how betrayed he felt that I, who he had trusted and respected, would dare to signal boost content that made people feel like it was okay to be fat. how dare I
anyway the weightloss industry is a scam
HuffPo is BS in many ways, but they knocked it out of the park with their 2018 article Everything You Know About Obesity is Wrong.Â
It delves into most of the points raised by the OP and takes it one step further by investigating how many health issues attributed to obesity are, in fact, often byproducts of the stress of being fat and not the weight itself. While this commonly includes conditions like depression, anxiety, and disordered eating, it can also translate to heart problems as a result of the body producing more of the stress hormone cortisol, which can increase blood cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar, and blood pressureâall common risk factors for heart disease. Cortisol can also promote buildup or plaque in the arteries. Some studies have started to look at the life expectancy of those who are stigmatized and bullied for being fat vs. those who arenât. Spoiler alert: people who are tortured and traumatized for their weight donât live longer.
And none of this even scratches the surface of medical bias and the subpar treatment many fat folks face when seeking medical advice for something completely unrelated to diet or nutrition.
If people focused less on stigmatizing fat folks and wailing about health while also upholding systemic barriers that prevent fat folks from being able to participate in fitness activities in the same way as their thinner counterparts, a greater number of people might find an active lifestyle more accessible to them, thus promoting better exercise habits and overall strength and fitness. Many, many people, including those medically considered âoverweightâ or âobese,â enjoy being activeâwhatever that might look like on an individual levelâand participating in activities such as organized sports, but avoid doing so because of fear of ridicule or stigma, or various barriers that are systematically placed in their way.Â
For instance: do you know how impossible it is to pursue a hobby in long-distance cycling while fat? How about kayaking? Surfing? Or equestrian? If you think any of the clothing or equipment necessary for these sportsâsuch as cycling jerseys or one-piece suits, wetsuits, actual kayaks, or breechesâare easily accessible to people over a US womenâs size 10/12, think again. And that is to say nothing about how fat folks can be ostracized or bullied for even trying to participate in fitness activities, even ones as basic as going for a jog or hitting the gym.
While thinness isnât an indicator of health or physical fitness, the same also holds true: fatness isnât an indicator of lack of health or physical fitness. They arenât mutually exclusive concepts, but fat people are often barred from fitness or active spaces without experiencing some form of alienation or barriers to their participation, whether social, economic, physical, or otherwise.
(And none of this is to say that anyone, especially fat people, owe others fitness or âgoodâ health, because that is how we slide firmly into ableism.)
We donât owe the world anything period. Fatness doesnât preclude us from being able to enjoy the same happiness and acceptance as thin folks, and we sure as fuck shouldnât have to participate in health or diet culture to âearnâ respect or acknowledgement of our basic human rights.
For those who are interested, there is also a fantastic article from Medium that looks at The Bizarre and Racist History of the BMIÂ that I highly recommend.
Main reason some people get angry and deny all this is that theyâve tortured themselves for years to keep just a couple of negligible pounds off and donât want to think it was a wasted effort, but most people only need a normal level of activity and mundane varied diet. All the hundreds of hours of yoga and gross milkshakes on top of that probably did very little.

AND YET A TRACE OF THE TRUE SELF EXISTS IN THE FALSE SELF
this post is about plastic dinosaurs
On this day, 1 April 1982, oil company Exxon produced a private, internal report on carbon dioxide (CO2) and the greenhouse effect. A summary of the report circulated to senior management stated that carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was concentrated at 340 ppm, and that burning fossil fuels and clearing forests was causing this figure to increase. It does state that there was âcurrently no unambiguous scientific evidence that the Earth is warmingâ but goes on to state that global warming could be detected by 1995. It warns that this warming might be irreversible, and says that mitigating against negative effects of global warming would require a reduction in fossil fuel combustion. Exxon scientists projected that surface temperatures would warm 3-6°C above preindustrial levels by the year 2100. The report proves that as early as the 1970s Exxon, like many fossil fuel companies, knew that their products were going to cause devastating climate change to the planet, even though it was not yet detectable. However, Exxon took no corrective action, and instead funnelled $31 million to fund misinformation campaigns to try to manufacture doubt about climate change. Pictured: their projection of average global temperature, which have proved to be broadly accurate since. https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1685095161675627/?type=3
