are you guys hearing about this dude working to developing a vaccine for cats that he's hoping would like. theoretically double their lifespans?
turns out i wasn't making that up, his name is Dr. Toru Miyazaki! he also wrote a book called "The Day Cats Live To Be Thirty", so cats are kind of his thing.
apparently, cats' kidneys tend to be the thing that takes them down, something about their bodies being unable to self-clean their kidneys, and the vaccine is supposed revitalize the body's ability to do just that. It would be very VERY fucking cool to have cats suddenly reaching 30 years of age be the normal thing.
As they age, almost all cats develop kidney disease, from which they eventually die. Just as in humans, kidney disease i
Dr. Toru Miyazakiโs AIM injection for cat kidney disease enters trials in 2025, aiming for a 2027 release. Greycoat Research supports the sc
whoa wait i actually read the articles and it's so much cooler than just that!!
dude cracked the case about WHY kidneys fail, across the board as far as i can tell. turns out there's a specific molecule whose job it is to attach to waste and signal macrophages to come eat it. it remains inactive in cats for some reason, but the molecule is still there. basically what he's done is found the switch to activate them. this will be profound not only for our domestic babies, but for big cats too - especially cheetahs!
although his research was focused on cats, it's already being used to develop drugs for humans too!
on top of that, since these molecules are tags for waste, this could also dramatically lower the rate of fatty liver disease, liver cancer, urinary crystals, rheumatoid arthritis, and even some neurological cases! like, they're hoping it may have an impact on parkinson's and alzheimers, but it DOES have an impact on stroke recovery. like. holy shit.
furthermore, he's insisting that the feline drug be affordable if and when it rolls out onto the market. he wants this to be something anyone can get for their cat!! idk how much sway he'll have over the human drug, but hopefully enough that it, too, won't be that expensive.
annnnnd in his research that he's still doing for the human side of things, he's found a potential link between this molecule and estrogen. in the 20,000 samples he's tested, women between ages 10 and 29 had the highest amount of this molecule present in their blood (a higher amount means Something Fucky is going on, essentially. There's a higher amount of waste the body is trying to clean out) but it drops down to be almost equal amongst men and women after menopause. it hasn't been looked into yet, but fuck, just the fact it's noted and known and probably WILL be looked into soon??? imagine if this is what leads to figuring out all the various ways the ovaries and uterus fucks with people and how to fix it. or even like, maybe there's something about estrogen that makes it work better. who knows! but it's rad the link is there to be researched :D
man just think, not only could our kitties start living longer, healthier lives, but just maybe dialysis will become as rare and obsolete as the iron lung is for people. what a badass Dr. Toru is!
"But I don't want to turn people into dinosaurs. I wanna cure kittie kidneys!"
Update: So they have done clinical trials and have submitted it for approval as of april 2026. They are expecting it to be available late 2026/early 2027

Die temu ad die
Hmm. Accidentally looks like latin.
It accidentally is latin
Accidental latin is my new favourite thing.
Found this in the margins of a medieval manuscript.
This is a very charming illustration and I do approve of Accidental Latin, but unfortunately, that is not what this (Fake) Accidental Latin actually says. Google Translate seems to think "temu" is identical to "timor" (infinitive, "to fear"), which would then be conjugated in first-person singular as "timeo" ("I fear"). "Temu" is not a word in Latin. So that is a very weird leap on Google Translate's part to turn gibberish into... something vaguely etymologically similar sounding? Hmm.
Next, "die" does mean "day," though nominative singular is "dies," i.e. "dies irae." It could be conjugated "die" if it was in ablative or locative case, but "die ad die" would mean something more like "day to day." "Ad" is in a "to" direction and "ab" is from, i.e. "ab urbis," and ablative case is used to indicate the movement of a thing. In short, "by" is not really a way to translate "ad"; we might want "per" here? (Through, by means of, etc.)
Not to mention, it would be weird to put one "die" at the start and another at the end The verb also usually goes at the end in Latin sentences, just for that extra bit of fun. So yes, in short, this is not actually Latin, and Google Translate is very bad at Latin in particular. Nonetheless, still charming.
@theshitpostcalligrapher
Agree, @qqueenofhades, except on the matter of breaking โdie ad dieโ apart. Itโs a common structure in poetic and oratorical Latin to jam one phrase in the middle of another. I canโt think of an example exactly parallel to this construction, but I could believe a Roman poet would write it!
Ah, that is true. My Latin is of the reading-medieval-documents (particularly charters and/or chronicles) variety, where the sentence and usage structures are often more formulaic and there is less poetic license to move words around. There is obviously far less fixity for word order in Latin, since the conjugations explain how they grammatically relate to each other rather than placement in the sentence. (Coincidentally, this is why I used to say that the best feeling in the world was walking past a Latin classroom and not having to go inside it. Ahem.)
So yes: true that poetical Latin might be more at liberty to split the "die"-s up that far, though "timeo" (verb) is still more likely in most cases to go at the end, which would place them together anyway ("die ad die timeo," "day to day I fear" if translated in strict word order, which would make sense to an English speaker and sound more poetic anyway). Keep in mind, however, that my Latin is a) fairly rusty and b) mostly used for said formulaic legal document reading rather than freeform verse, so don't super-hard quote me on this.
I saw that ablative โdieโ and that final -u on โtemuโ and thought of the ablative supine (as in โmirabile dictuโ) but as you observe, there isnโt a verb that โtemuโ could be, and then also, the ablative supine requires an adjective, as far as I know.
But perhaps โtemuโ is a hapax legomenon (in which case we would need the rest of the text to gloss it) or a scribal error for temeratu, from temero, โI defile or disgraceโ. In that case, and in true Tumblr form, I might translate it as โdaily I disgrace, in the manner of the dayโ, with some errors attributable to the scribe.
....oh my god. You might be a genius. Because what else does Tumblr do but daily disgrace [itself, oneself, and/or numerous others] in the manner of the day, and make numerous scribal errors.
how dare you say we error on the scribes
Got this vintage Midge for three dollars at a Goodwill in Dayton, where we road tripped to see Beetlejuice.
Deciding how I want to approach fixing her up. Impressive that her eyes seem like they were going in relatively the same direction before the were rubbed off - old Midge is always looking in multiple directions.
filthy, filthy read
I think Ebert's kind of a dick, but he's close to the very interesting way fandom overlaps with religion. I'll say this, too, conversations with fans get way less boring if you know how to ask pointed questions.
Hollow people fill themselves with meaning by falling into the embrace of Luke Skywalker or Jesus Christ in much the same way. A pointy question might be "why do you believe in god?" or "what makes you think Star Wars is worth paying attention to?" We often sketch these types of questions as rude, but they really don't have to be.
In deep fandom as in deep religion, you become an "expert," you buy the merch, you debate canon over trivia you've already made up your mind about, you master the lane and then stay in it. It's a parallel social process, turning towards a known cultural institution for comfort in the face of a cruel & unfair world, and I think it's facinating.
We can meet these folk with more compassion than Roger manages to muster up here, but I also think we need to be aware of when someone's so wounded it's not the time to pull their covers back, or whether we even can or should. Sometimes you just leave these circles because you're a bigger, healthier person than those who stay in them. You can criticize fandom like this and not be wrong, but Ebert's only scratching at the surface level of a really interesting phenomenon.
It's actual insane how much fandom and religion overlap. For example, "canon" is a term that's originally about which interpretation of scripture is correct. Fandom & religion even become similar in terms of their insular cultures and exclusion of others. Look back on the history of church schisms and tell me they aren't showcasing the same kind of drama that plays out in fan communities today.
For me, a really neat piece of this is how fandom and religion both attempt to define culture within certain lines, and those definitions are ultimately destined to fail if you read too literally. You can learn from Jesus as much as you can from Yoda, but if you treat anything they have to say as literal, gospel truth, you're putting too much authority in the hands of one fake guy. I think embracing the mystery & the ambiguity is empowering, but it's not without some peril of its own.
A literal interpretation of a text is certain, it's rock solid, it's well defined and safe. But we very much lack the tools to be that literal about anything, and scientists will be the first people to confirm that for you. Our condition is inevitably one of ambiguity, and it's quite telling how uncomfortable that makes us.

Haven't felt much like being here or anywhere else for a long while. I'm just finding it exhausting and like I'm spread tissue paper thin when I'm on too many social things and lately 'too many' is 'any at all'.
I'm just doing work on my original things and messing with dolls. The original stuff doesn't get any interaction outside of the two people I send it to directly anyway, so it hasn't felt worth the effort to do anything else.
But I'm alive and such.
I saw the Beetlejuice Musical this weekend and was so delighted by every second of it. Has me digging up my ten year old Beetlejuice cartoon fanart. I saw the cartoon first when I was a kid. It had a least a decade head start on any other version, so it's my favorite, but musical version is suddenly right up there with it and I'm really happy with this development, honestly.
So look at some decade old art of B and a Lydia, complete with old url. Maybe I'll make more even though I've been doing just original stuff for months. :P
