that aside, hi, i'm sye (he/they). i needed a new pinned post so i decided to make one.
i'm a writer and an artist, 30+, and i really like talking about my own characters/OCs. i've been trying to post more about my characters and stories here, and decided to create this post partially so i could have an easily accessible tag directory on my blog. i do reblog fandom stuff too but i am far more invested in my own projects.
note for anyone who decides to follow me: this blog is not strictly speaking NSFW. i do not make or reblog Explicit porn or text posts or anything like that, nor will i reblog extreme gore. However, i will often reblog art with artistic nudity, mild amounts of blood / light gore, or dirty / somewhat sexual or violent joke / comedy posts, including ones that reference kinks and/or fetishes. for that reason, i generally give my own blog a rough age rating of 16+. i am not necessarily against older teenagers following this blog, but i wouldn't say that the contents of this blog are appropriate for younger audiences.
in other words: be warned that there will be some amount of mild sexual content, nonsexual artistic nudity, and light violent imagery on my blog sometimes, but nothing highly explicit, and not super frequently. please do not follow me if you would have a problem with seeing any of this, especially if you are a minor who is highly sensitive to seeing any artistic nudity or discussions of sex and sexuality, or easily upset by the sight of blood.
additionally, as of 3/19/2026, i am going to be a little bit more open about my plurality on my blog. not about the nature of the plurality itself or anything about how it functions. no, instead i am going to allow some of my mental neighbors to start talking and posting on my blog.
i will signal when a different system member aside from myself is talking primarily by putting a specific associated emoji at the beginning of a tag or section of text they are typing. i will also assign myself an emoji to signal when i'm taking the reins of the post/tags back. anyone interacting with my blog is also allowed to ask questions of or generally talk to the system members who are using my blog directly, but all of us reserve the right to be vague or not answer specific questions.

I've been using this tool called tumblr-utils to back up my tumblr blogs. it creates a locally navigatable archive of a given tumblr url's posts, which is more convenient than the post soup you get from tumblr's native blog export feature.
what that means is that I have a folder on my computer with the name of my url with an index.html file in it, and when i click on that file to open it in a browser I get a simple page with a list of years and months. selecting a specific month will send me to a list of the posts i made or reblogged in that month, similar to tumblr's own archive page. the contents of the post including images are stored locally on your machine.
It can also make a separate index file that organises posts by tag, which is great if you're a consistent tagger, but it will list every single tag you've ever used so it can take a while to find the tag you're looking for in the list if you're a habitual tag commentator. generating the tag archive also takes a while depending on how many posts have to be processed.
you can make it back up any blog as long as it's not set to private. I have backups of both my main and sideblogs and it keeps them in separate folders.
it's had some trouble going all the way back to the start of my main blog in 2012 just by sheer volume of posts, but by making it fetch posts from one month at a time I've been able to go back to 2015 (that's tens of thousands of posts), which was good enough for my purposes.
it might be a little scary to use if you've never touched the command line before, but there's both text and video instructions to set it up and using it is just a matter of typing the command and letting it do its thing in the background.

After years of living in the adulting world, I think Iâve come to a realization: Manners exist to guide you to good conduct even when youâre in a bad mood.
When youâre happy, when youâre feeling generous, when youâre pleased with your gift or your service or your outcome, itâs easy to be nice. Itâs easy to tip the waiter well when youâve had a good day. Itâs easy to thank the teller or the clerk when you got what you wanted out of the transaction. Itâs easy to smile and chit-chat with strangers on the road when youâre in a good mood.
Itâs hard to tip the waiter when you didnât enjoy your food. Itâs hard to thank the clerk for their time when youâve just been told thereâs a problem with their account and they werenât able to fix it for you. Itâs hard to think of something nice to say when your aunt gave you a crappy sweater you neither need nor want. Itâs hard to be nice to people when youâve had a shitty day. Itâs HARD.
Thatâs what manners are for. Scripts and phrases that you learn by rote to say when you canât think of a single nice or good thing to say from your own volition. Yes, theyâre scripted. Yes, the sentiment is empty. But the scripts work in every situation, and the emptiness provides a buffer between your own unhappiness and the rest of society. The fact that they are empty means that they are not heavy to carry.
Because most of the time, itâs not the waiterâs fault that the food you ordered wasnât what you expected. Itâs not the clerkâs fault that your account is overdrawn. Itâs not the fault of the barista or the stranger on the subway that you got fired today or your favorite aunt died. But even when you canât summon a smile or a cheery word, you can still have manners, because they will serve you the same in sunshine or rain.
So, I lurk in some writer subreddits, and a frequent topic of discussion is prose: what constitutes good prose, how do you write it, how do you improve it, etc. And yesterday I stumbled across one topic about the difference between good descriptive prose, and purple prose. OP asks people to share some of their favourite authors who they think write beautiful prose without tipping into purple. No problem; people are happy to oblige.
One person says that Steinbeck is one of their favourite authors for prose, and then they share an example of what they would consider purple prose. It is so violetly awful that I think the poster must have written it themselves as a kind of parody of purple prose. Other people assumed the same.
But as it turns out, they are quoting from a book written by a YouTuber whose channel ia dedicated to talking about writing (namely, their own writing, which is genius, but often not comprehensible to the drooling plebs).

My last name. His first name. Somehow he's a registered voter now.
Called the county clerk.
Me: My cat got summoned for jury duty.
Clerk: Is the name correct on the summons?
Me: Yes, but he's a cat.
Clerk: Is Felix Martinez a legal resident of this county?
Me: He's a legal cat.
Clerk: Sir, if the name matches our records, he needs to appear or file an exemption.
Me: He can't file anything. He has paws.
Clerk: You can file on his behalf.
Me: Under what exemption? There's no box for "is a cat."
Clerk: (pause) Check "unable to serve due to medical reasons."
Me: What's the medical reason?
Clerk: He's a cat.
Me: That's not a medical condition.
Clerk: It is if it prevents him from serving.
Sent in the form. Got rejected two weeks later.

Took the letter to my vet.
Me: I need you to write that my cat can't do jury duty.
Vet: Why is your cat summoned for jury duty?

Vet: This is the weirdest request I've gotten.
Me: Can you just write that he's medically unfit to serve?
Vet: On what grounds?
Me: He's a cat.
Vet: (started typing) "Patient is unable to serve due to species-related limitations including inability to speak, read, or comprehend legal proceedings."
Me: Perfect.
Sent it in. Got another rejection.
"Summons is mandatory. Failure to appear will result in contempt of court."
My roommate thought this was hilarious.
Roommate: Felix is going to jail.
Me: This is serious.
Roommate: Bring him to court. See what happens.
Decided that was actually the only option left.
Day of jury duty, put Felix in his carrier. Brought the entire paper trail of rejection letters.
Checked in at the courthouse.
Clerk: Name?
Me: Felix Martinez.
Clerk: (looked at the cat carrier) Is that Felix?
Me: Yes.
Clerk: (long stare) He's a cat.
Me: I've been saying that for six weeks.
Clerk: Why didn't you file an exemption?
Me: I filed three. All rejected.
Showed her the letters. She read through them, expression shifting from confusion to disbelief.
Clerk: Someone rejected the veterinary documentation?
Me: Twice.
Clerk: (called her supervisor over) You need to see this.
Supervisor read everything. Looked at Felix. Looked at me.
Supervisor: How did a cat get registered to vote?
Me: You tell me.
Supervisor: This is a data error.
Me: Took you six weeks to figure that out.
They dismissed Felix immediately. Apologized for the inconvenience.
Supervisor: We'll remove him from the voter registry.
Me: Appreciate it.
Supervisor: (pause) Out of curiosity, how would he have voted?
Me: Probably whatever party supports universal treats.
Got a formal apology letter a week later and a voter registration card.
For me this time. Apparently I wasn't registered, but my cat was.
Roommate: Felix committed voter fraud.
Me: Felix committed nothing. He's innocent.
Roommate: That's what they all say.
Felix is sleeping on the jury summons now.

fascinating to me how one of the new emerging trends in my dreams lately is "relatively normal commercial establishment but it is unreasonably huge and maze-like and filled with so many individual specialized sections that it feels like a small city in of itself." recently i dreamed about going to what seemed like a home goods and furniture store with my parents, but the actual store had like dozens and dozens of individual rooms dedicated to displaying one specific thing. one room was a bunch of identical couches in rows all upholstered with fabric that had slightly different variations of the same pattern on each couch. another room had a giant player piano that was actually six pianos in one and had six separate keyboards. each one could play a different part of a melody at the same time. another room was just a gigantic indoor playground so kids had somewhere to mess around while adults were shopping, that also doubled as a display room for playground equipment. there were giant climbable dinosaur fossil displays of questionable anatomical correctness. it was wild.
