i feel so defensive and protective of people with ARFID like if i had a disorder that made my brain register 90% of food as poison for no reason and i had a bazillion people on the internet constantly calling me a manchild who needs to just grow up and stop being a picky eater i would start killing people
people with ARFID and people with very few autism safe foods and people with contamination OCD and people in ED recovery and everyone else with a complicated relationship with food that no one takes seriously GET BEHIND ME!!!!!!!

i took an oil painting class in college, and although i had only ever done pencil and charcoal before that, i was pretty good at it right away. and i really enjoyed it a lot, just on a sensory level, mixing the paint with the palette knife, trying to match a color just right, blending it with my brush, the whole thing. and i also loved walking home from class in my paint smeared overalls, bc i felt like an Artist and that made me feel cool.
in any case, i went into the studio the day before our last class to finish up my final project bc it was due the next day, and i finished it and i was happy with the results and i walked home feeling great. and then the next day, it turned out we still had the whole 3-hour class to work on our final projects, so i set up and figured i’d just fiddle with it a bit. but then the final piece was so much better than what i had initially considered finished. like, miles better! it was one of only two projects in the class that got an A.
that was such an important lesson for me in terms of creative work. there comes a point where i think that i’m done, either bc i just don’t feel like working anymore, i’m tired or bored, or i have been looking at it so long that i can’t tell what’s what. but if i step away and then come back and give it one more go after i think it’s done, that’s where the really good stuff happens. i don’t always have the patience to do this but when i do, it really makes a difference.
