Like he was sent on his own to find out how the crew wanted to die and then sort out the logistics, he accompanies Stratt literally everywhere and is often the only other person she takes, she relies on him to explain the science jargon to her but she also hauls him along to the copyright case for no discenernable reason, he meets one on one with most of the collaborators including the inventor of the beetle probes, he's the one tasked with teaching both science specialists everything he knows about astrophage, he goes with her to break embezzlement bob out of prison, his trailer is right next to Stratt's and he's the first person she checks on after the research centre explodes, he was the first scientist involved in ground research and has been involved ever since. Like he has been the second in command and the rest of the crew is rightly baffled when he claims that he's just another researcher.

Meanwhile Grace is just waiting in anticipation for someone to ask for a chunk of his hair or something. Hes lowkey curious as to what theyd find. Hes fine with being a creature to them its chill he gets it as a fellow intellectual and all around curious guy who insisted on watching Rocky eat.
