While the contexts are completely different, it is interesting that Lorelai and Jess are close to the same age when their respective introductions to Rory propel both of them into believing they can have a different life and belong somewhere, which leads them to embrace their own individuality and requires that they go against everything they'd been taught and learn how to trust other people. They start long-term careers (and friendships) when Mia and the publishers of Jess's book see something in them worth taking a chance on. Lorelai and Jess finding a home where they could be accepted and grow into their strengths while still fully being themselves is at the core of both of their stories. They each find direction for the anger and pain they experienced and end up with "a lovely life," as Lorelai says in the pilot, but they never needed to be "fixed" to get there.
