Studying languages has you feeling like a kid sometimes. Like someone will ask “how’s Chinese going” and you’re like “I learned my colors! 😊” or “I can count to ten now”
I posted this as a joke but the more I think about it the more I need to just act like a kid with languages. Like maybe tomorrow I’ll learn my shapes! or learn animals!
As mentioned, I'm making some changes to my language learning routine going into the new year and I'm finally back from my holiday and ready to make this post!
In 2026 I'll be taking on a little challenge based on the refold language method
What is the refold language method?
This method focuses largely on comprehensible input and learning a language through that input, rather than the standard grammar focused approach
What Will Be Changing?
I'll be focusing on two languages, Italian, Russian and French
Why Italian? This has been my main language for a while now and I would like to see how this method differs compared to what I have been doing so far
Why French? I'm a complete beginner to French so I want to see how this method works for a language you haven't studied before. I'm making it slightly easier on myself as there are lots of French resources and media, and it is also a romance language like Italian
Why Russian? This is kind of a curveball challenge, purely to see how I do!
This doesn't mean I cannot study other languages, but they won't be my main concern for 2026 at least
What is the Challenge?!
The general layout of the refold method includes the following:
Passive Immersion
----- This is content you play in the background and aren't fully paying attention to. This is to get more a 'feel' for the language and to increase your exposure. Kind of like a faux immersion.
Active Immersion
----- This is the most important part of the method and involves consuming media you can partly understand such as a tv show, graded reader, article etc. Here, the difference is that you are concentrating all of your attention on the content.
----- Active immersion can be split into 2 types:
----- Intensive Active Immersion: You are trying to understand every single word and understand everything completely
----- Extensive Active Immersion: You're focusing on the content but you aren't looking everything up
Active Study
----- This again can be split between two main kinds of active study:
----- Vocab study: I'll be using anki and from what I can see this is the most recommended flashcard website due to its great use of SRS
----- Grammar Study: This is less important within refold as the idea is you will naturally pick up grammar patterns through immersion. This, however, can be slow so I will be doing regular grammar study as a supplement to my main routine!!

Feel free to join in!
Study each TL for 1 hour a day (so for me, I'll be studying two hours a day, one for Italian and one for French)
Spend an additional half hour a day per TL on passive listening (remember this can be playing while you do other activities)
For your one hour of study:
20 minutes a day should be active study
Complete your anki reviews each day
Learn minimum 5 new words a day (by the end of 2026, you'll learn 1825 words per language)
Following your anki reviews, whatever remains of those 20 minutes should be spent on grammar study
The remaining 40 minutes will be spent on Active Immersion
This is where I will get most of my vocab to add to my anki decks!
Additional Points
The refold method doesn't stress output very much until later in your studies. The idea is to mimic the way a child learns a language, they first spend a long period of time listening before they begin to talk.
For this reason, I won't be focusing very much on output for my French. I'm not sure if i agree with this aspect but I want to give this method a true go, so by the end of 2026 we'll see how it goes!
When it comes to Italian, however, I will be having regular iTalki sessions as I'm much further along in my studies
Basically, if you want to try this out, do what you want!
I'll be tracking my learning hours and seeing how I get on during the year to hopefully learn my TLs!
I think this will be a fun experiment to see how the method works!!

somehow made it all the way to grad school without realizing that ius means both law and. Soup. why is plautus the only one to flagrantly abuse this. if i wrote in a language where law and soup were the same word i'd make puns at an insufferable rate. no speech act would be safe
