there's never enough money each month. there's always an unexpected illness. new symptoms pop up or old symptoms flare up. meds have to be managed always and refilled constantly and any refill has the opportunity to go wrong. any regular care has the opportunity to go wrong. any mistake can send your health spiralling. it's always "i just need to get through this bad patch" but as soon as one ends another begins. another crisis begins in the middle of the last crisis. managing one thing leaves another thing to be neglected until that becomes a major issue and has to be managed asap and the cycle starts anew over and over and over

Additionally, MangoLanguages offers their Yiddish course for free.
If you're an American or Canadian, please check with your library--you might have the entirety of MangoLanguages' language catalogue for free through them!!!
was never on Duolingo but i love at-risk jewish languages so: tagging in with some free resources for learning Ladino/Judeo-Spanish, the threatened Sephardic Jewish language!
Video Courses
Ladino 101- Language and Song: An Intro Course to the Language and Culture of Ladino (Sephardic Jewish Brotherhood of America/ La Ermandad Sefaradi): Virtual lessons with recorded videos, Powerpoint slides, exercises with answers, vocabulary etc. It looks like some of the videos aren't on the site but if you open the playlist on youtube they are all there, albeit out of order!
Ladino 102- Language and Song: Intermediate Ladino (Sephardic Jewish Brotherhood of America/ La Ermandad Sefaradi): Second course of virtual Ladino lessons!
Kurso De Ladino (Autoridad Nasionala del Ladino i su Kultura): Youtube playlist of Ladino video lessons, but they are geared towards Hebrew speakers)
Books and Dictionaries:
Kantoniko: I LOVE THIS SITE... in Ladino kantoniko means "hidden corner" and this is truly a hidden corner of Ladino! It's an online dictionary, you can type in a word in English, French, Spanish, Castilian, Turkish, Portuguese, or Ladino (transliteration or Rashi script) and it will translate into as many of the others as it can!
Diksionario de Ladinokomunita: A Ladino to English and English to Ladino Dictionary pdf!
Manual of Judeo-Spanish: Language and Culture (Marie-Christine Varol): A manual for learning Ladino that also has pictures and Sephardi cultural info! It was made with a CD to accompany, but if you aren't willing to pay hundreds of dollars you can find just the manual on Anna's Archive or internet archive which is what I did
Beginner's Ladino (Alla Markova): This workbook is a good place to start if you're looking for a Ladino primer! You can apparently get it on Kindle but also: Anna's Archive
Tandem (App): Full disclosure I've never used this one, but allegedly you can learn Ladino on here... the premise of the app is basically it pairs you up with a native speaker
Soletreo: Writing the Ladino Script (Stroum Center for Jewish Studies): Just for funsies, a video lesson on how to write the letters of soletreo, Sephardic Ladino script!
...for Advanced Learners (Matilda Koén-Sarano): Classic textbook, drier than Varol, more focused on grammar; contains lots of religious and secular songs, excerpts from books and newspapers, etc. One of its biggest strengths, in my opinion, is the fact that instructions are given in both Ladino and English right off the bat. The PDF is “rough” since the English translation was literally pasted on top of the original Hebrew one, vocabulary translations were written by hand, and some information boxes are too dark to see expressions clearly. Examples:
But they don't detract from the material as a whole, just something to keep in mind.
A Guide to Reading and Writing Judezmo (David M. Bunis): A guide on how to read Ladino in Meruba, Rashi, and Solitreo scripts. It offers Latin transcriptions in various dialects in the beginning so you may learn to read in whichever variety you see more fit, afterwards Latin transcriptions follow the author's approximate native pronunciation, accompanied by an English translation. It pairs nicely with...
The Ladino Memoir of Sa'adi Besalel a-Levi in original Solitreo (Translated and transliterated by Isaac Jerusalmi): The original Ladino manuscript of a memoir describing the Jewish culture of Ottoman Salonica before Alliance Israélite Universelle, courtesy of Stanford University Press. It's not a strictly language source, but it's great for practising to read and write solitreo, since the book (which you can find on Anna's Archive) has an English translation and a Romanised version, so you can compare the texts easily.
The Internet Archive has a lot of Ladino literature as well, check out subject:"Ladino" for dictionaries, periodicals, songbooks, etc. Don't confuse it with Ladin (Italian: Ladino), a Rhaeto-Romance language spoken in Northern Italy! Some Ladin materials are marked as Ladino.

I know a lot of people won't care about this but Air France and Airbus were found guilty of manslaughter in reference to the crash of Air France 447 (which had previously been determined to be solely pilot error) and it's a big fucking deal. It hopefully means airlines and aircraft manufacturers won't be able to hide behind blaming pilots for airline incidents so easily in the future.
