Does anyone want to see the presentation I made on what historical fashion trends we should bring back and which should burn in hell I made for a PowerPoint party?
The people have spoken
In conclusion: Wear what you want and be funky
@nightnightsweetprinceâ, @awhbeansâ <3
I am so tempted to do this and if you know where I work no you donât
So like i wanna dress full Victorian, right? Full on, maybe like 1880âs-90âs ish, right? But like, the entire outfit is black and white and Iâm painted fully black and white and probably wearing actual boots under my dress so I can run away real fast, then wait for people illegally trespassing at night to piss themselves because holy fuck thatâs a ghost
I mean itâs a pipe dream and Iâd never actually be allowed to do it, but Iâve always wanted to. The last time I scared people off who were doing illegal things on the property I stood on a bridge t-posing and chanting in Latin, why not become the ghost of the woman the camp is named after? I mean itâs the wrong time period but no one is gonna know that, right? Obviously since Iâm talking about a summer camp this would never fly, but man that would be fun
EDIT: actually I was bang on about 1890âs she was born in 1883 so sheâd be camper age about then
Anthropology major answer: âThere absolutely was such a time! Modern humans and our ancestors shared territory numerous times over prehistory with cousin species like homo neanderthalensis, homo floresiensis, and many, many others!âÂ
Folklore student answer: âAlso, almost all cultures have something like djinn, faeries, hulder, fox spirits, and other similar creatures who can appear at least human and are very, very dangerous to humans!âÂ
Both of these things are true, and may be connected both to the above and to each other. :D
Humans are not parasites on the world.
One thing that I think a lot of Environmentalists in America really overlook is that humans are supposed to be part of an ecosystem. Humans are part of the food web; we fill an environmental niche, just as much as beavers and wolves do. Â
We are SUPPOSED to interact with the environment- the problem arises when we begin interacting with the environment in UNSUSTAINABLE ways. This idea that we should try to âreturnâ the environment to the way it was âbeforeâ humans so so so often ignores the way that Indigenous people all over the world were (and are) an important part of their environments- and trying to âpreserveâ those places without people filling their ecological niche can cause harm in super weird ways.Â
You know how its shitty for deer populations if you take out all of the wolves? Itâs just as bad if you stop all human hunting too. Humans hunting deer has been an important part of the food web for thousands and thousands of years! Deer populations NEED hunters- human, wolf, cougar- to stay healthy.Â
Yes- massive clear cutting of forests and strip mining is bad. HOWEVER, not allowing Indigenous people to practice traditional controlled burns of grass lands? Not only makes wildfires worse, but ALSO fucks up the bio-diversity of those grasslands. Totally unmanaged âpristineâ grasslands without humans are actually less healthy than grasslands that are sustainably managed by people.
Mono-crop super farms are not good- but humans have been farming for thousands of years- tending for plants and increasing their yield, monitoring the soil, in ways that benefit those plants and the other animals that eat them, and the other plants that use that soil, and the insects that make their home there. Sustainable, diversified farming isnât bad.Â
Laying out acres and acres of asphalt and oil pipelines? Bad. But digging natural cisterns in the dessert that catches rainwater for grazing animals to use? Benefits the entire ecosystem and all the animals in it.Â
We are part of the environment. We belong here. And the ecosystems that human beings evolved in and lived in need us just as much as we need them. We arenât parasites on the planet, we are a part of it. Itâs just that global capitalism has thrown us terribly out of balance.  Colonialism and profit-seeking are the problem- not human beings existing. Â
The goal of environmentalism should not be to protect nature by keeping humans totally separate from it, but rather to restore balance with our interactions with nature, for sustainable practices that help us coexist with the ecosystems that we are part of. That we have been a part of forever.  And that is hard with billions of people on the planet, yes, and we will need to be clever and resourceful and thoughtful to find ways of restoring that balance, it will take a lot of people working together to find those answers- but humansâ greatest trait has always been our cleverness and our ability to work together.Â

*gets dressed up to spend time in the woods alone*
once at dawn i dressed up in my regency suit and went for a walk in the woods where i heard someone go âohâ (a little like a moan) and i got terrified iâd interrupted someone dogging or something so i immediately tried to walk away before i saw the person in question, who was just walking their dog (dogging in a sense!) and i got even more scared because they were wearing black skinny jeans and a black hoodie so they looked like they had very long slender arms and legs, and both of us were really shaken so i quickly tried to get out of sight. anyway i forgot i was wearing full 1810s regencywear complete with hat and probably looked significantly more like a ghost than they did. remember youâre never alone in the woods

Funny how that works
I am so pleased at how many notes are some version of âI donât fear the science, I fear the corporations who control itâ because that is EXACTLY the attitude you should have. GMOs can save us. Monsanto will kill us.
what people fear about GMO- âtheyre gonna make frankencarrots that crave human flesh and cause diarrhea â what GMO actually is- âwe made rice crop that is both drought resistant and flood resistant which will prevent about 20% of major famine disasters, also it now makes vitamin A because vitamin A deficiency in poverty stricken areas is a major killer of kids as most vitamin A rich foods dont grow thereâ what people SHOULD be upset about- âi made all crops sterile so all farmers have to buy the seed from me in perpetuity and i will sue anyone who tries to go back to crops that produce their own seedâ

they/them i made a chestplate yesterday, sourced from an old metal bucket i found in the woods :)
november 2020
Iâm still thinking of that post about the baby shark song that I just reblogged and honestly? yeah. the beauty of camp songs is 100% in how they differ depending on your home camp and whoâs leading the song and stuff. and itâs GLORIOUS. I LOVE not knowing how my songâs gonna end.
Bill Groganâs Goat. Does the goat die or get shipped off to slowly be tortured at a Girl Scout camp? God knows until we get there.
Will the littlest worm escape his fate by means of tiny scuba gear, or is he permadead?
When your song leader yells EARLY IN THE MOOOOOORNINâ are you about to embark on the journey of a bird with a really long name, or are you going to yell about how Felix doesnât like pits in his juice?
What are we thankful for in the Lollipop Grace? Chocolate? Raisins? Tacos?
What is Herman the worm even eating?
Princess Pat. Did she live in a tree or was she involved with a wide infantry? A first infantry?Â
What the ever loving chestnut do you sing when youâre introducing Running Bear?
How many things rhyme with âthunderation?â
Anyway camp songs are about questions and not knowing and assuming that probably someone will die by the end of it (but in like a fun way, with historic reasons for why so many songs involve death). And itâs glorious. And the commercialization of these songs would take them away and itâs why I have so much fun laughing at anything with Melinda Caroll.
tell me something nice
if you grow mushrooms over a toxic waste site, chemical spill, or other polluted growing medium, they will suck up the toxins into their fruiting bodies with such effectiveness that they are being studied for their ability to clean up tainted industrial sites. itâs called mycoremediation.
if you do this with edible mushrooms, they are no longer technically edible, but on the other hand they make a great way to poison your enemies. this is called murder and itâs usually frowned upon, but they wonât see it coming and you get bragging rights afterwards about your ability to kill people with a pizza topping.
Sorry this was not precisely most peopleâs idea of ânice.â Let me add that you are a glow of comforting absurdity in an ever-more-fucked-up world.
I love everything about mycoremediation, but also
maybe its bc i live in a place where forestry is one of the dominant industries but like tree planting rly isnt good. like the majority of the time its done by forestry companies to âoffsetâ what theyâve cut down, and they almost always just plant fir & spruce monocrops and then they prevent the rest of the forest from naturally regenerating by spraying glyphosate, because they want to kill off the hardwoods that grow back since softwoods are worth more to the pulp industry⌠anything a company does that is supposedly âgreenâ never is.
They arenât actually replanting the forest, theyâre building lumber farms in the middle of it and trying to pass them off as the same thing to people who think a forest is just trees because they live in a world mediated by images and have never been in an actual forest long enough to be able to tell healthy diverse growth from a struggling monocrop.
Sometimes you just need to turn off the world and channel your inner cryptid â¨đ
